They say that conflict is the essence of drama, and in this handsome but impossibly somber biopic there is almost nothing but conflict. Following up last year’s surprise hit Sound of Freedom, director Alejandro Monteverde neatly sidesteps a repeat of that film’s controversy with a story that cannot remotely be interpreted as a QAnon allegory. Based on the true story of Frances Xavier Cabrini — literally the first American saint — this takes a most un-maga viewpoint on immigration, painting an unvarnished portrait of racism in a country that is supposed to embrace the tired and the poor.
Right from the start, Cabrini impresses with its set design, giving Martin Scorsese’s studio work a run for its money and taking place shortly after the latter’s atmospheric brace of 19th century movies The Age of Innocence and Gangs of New York. A title card informs us that between 1899 and...

To quote a famous lyric from the musical Hamilton, immigrants get the job done. That message seems to be getting lost in the current wave of anti-immigrant sentiment sweeping the nation, if not the world. But it receives a timely reminder in Cabrini, the new drama about Francesca Cabrini, the Catholic missionary who arrived on our shores in 1889 and eventually established enough schools, orphanages and hospitals to form a veritable charitable empire. She became the first U.S. citizen to be canonized, in 1946, 29 years after her death. (And she’s apparently still performing miracles to this day, since she’s billed as one of the film’s executive producers.)
The film arrives courtesy of Angel Studios and director Alejandro Monteverde, both responsible for last year’s surprise, controversial smash hit about child sex trafficking, Sound of Freedom. This effort will likely prove far less divisive, if also less commercial. An old-fashioned,...

The last cork has been popped and the final flute of Kirkland Signatures sparkling wine drained down to the last drop. Old Man 2023 has gathered his sash about his withered frame and slunk into the night, clearing the way for cherubic New Year 2024–giggly, chubby and brimming with promise.
Or something. In reality, years don’t flip on and off like a light switch. They smear into each other like paint, until everything is the same weird shade of brownish-purple. But still: we all strive to make each new chapter in the Gregorian filing system a fresh start–a chance to break bad habits and begin good ones.
The traditional way of kickstarting these self-improvement reboots is through the maddeningly self-deceptive ritual of setting New Year’s Resolutions–80% of which are inevitably abandoned by February 1, according to most studies. Released last fall, Lucky McKee’s “chamber thriller” Old Man had nothing to do with the Don’t Breathe films, despite starring Stephen Lang – who played the “Blind Man” in both Don’t Breathe and Don’t Breathe 2. But that didn’t stop the movie’s Russian distributor from marketing it as a prequel to those films! During an interview with Jb Hi-Fi, McKee laughed about the fact that his movie is part of the Don’t Breathe franchise, as far as Russia is concerned.
McKee said, “In Russia, they released it as Don’t Breathe: The Beginning. Kind of like the Italians used to do back in the day, with movies like Zombi 2.“
Sure enough, if you search the title Don’t Breathe: The Beginning, you’ll find confirmation that Old Man is a Don’t Breathe prequel in Russia.

Opening on a tapestry showcasing a cabin deep in the woods, director Lucky McKee allows viewers inside to watch its sleeping resident. An old man (Stephen Lang) awakens to discover the disappearance of his beloved companion, Rascal. Over the course of his search, the old man’s worry at loneliness transforms into spite, as a desire for vengeance stems from his abandonment. That is soon broken when a knocking is heard at the door.
Cautiously approaching the door with his gun, the old man discovers a lost hiker named Joe (Marc Senter). Distrust lingers in the old man, as he initially asks whether Joe is telling the truth and if he has been sent to spy on the cabin dweller. The lost hiker is frightened of the host, although he struggles for an...

This post contains spoilers for this week’s episode of Succession, “Kill List.”
On Sunday night’s Succession, Kendall and Roman goofed their way into a deal to sell Waystar RoyCo for a price that only someone who is definitely not a serious person would refuse. Meanwhile, the rest of the company’s high-ranking personnel found themselves squaring up with their counterparts at GoJo, leading to a lot of awkward, corporate pissing contests that actually could’ve been a whole lot more Hunger Games-esque.

This article contains spoilers for "Succession" season 4.
The fourth and final season of "Succession" has been the show's most seismic yet. With Logan Roy (Brian Cox) gone, his children — Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Roman (Kieran Culkin), and Shiv (Sarah Snook) — and "Old Guard" senior staff are all trying to navigate the future of Waystar Royco. For most of them, that means completing the sale of the company to tech firm GoJo, headed by Lucas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård). However, business deals of this magnitude always come with casualties.
The latest episode, where the deal seemingly goes through after a shared Waystar & GoJo retreat in Norway, was titled "Kill List." Halfway through the episode, Greg (Nicholas Braun) namedrops this while confirming the existence of a kill list to Tom (Matthew Macfadyen). At the episode's end, the Waystar crew finally gets a look at the kill list and some of them are on it.

Some wounds don’t heal. Not with time. Not with a mythical lake of water with the power to mend all ailments. And while we can try to forget, the mind will always keep a little bit of the truth in reach to ensure the cause of the pain is never far away. It therefore makes sense that we would ultimately meet and leave Stephen Lang’s character at the center of Old Man asleep on his bed with thumb in mouth like a child. The position alludes to the calm of innocence and the desire to find comfort from fear. It means he wakes in a state of disoriented ignorance before taking to slumber amidst grief and guilt’s unavoidable confusion. As for what’s in-between: that’s the journey put on-screen.

"My grandfather told me you can never be too careful in these woods… He told me it's beautiful but it can also be dangerous." Rlje Films has revealed an official trailer for Old Man, a small contained thriller from filmmaker Lucky McKee. "Thre's all kinds of death and beauty out here." When a lost hiker stumbles upon an erratic old man living in the woods, he could never have imagined the nightmare that awaits. This looks like it has some crazy twists and turns, and it might not be a random encounter after all. The thriller stars Stephen Lang as the "old man" and Marc Senter as the hiker, along with Liana Wright-Mark, and Patch Darragh. This looks like it gets unsettling, and has a stage play feel to it with two people in a cabin arguing about this & that. I'm still curious what the big twist might be and how they know each other.

Almost two years have gone by since we first heard that Stephen Lang – who played the “Blind Man” in Don’t Breathe (watch it Here) and its sequel – would be starring in genre filmmaker Lucky McKee’s “chamber thriller” Old Man, not to be confused with the Jeff Bridges TV series The Old Man. Now it has been announced that Rlje Films has picked up the Old Man distribution rights and plans to give the film a theatrical, VOD, and digital release on October 14th.
Scripted by Joel Veach, who also wrote the story as a play that was workshopped at the Actor’s Studio in New York, Old Man follows
a lost hiker who stumbles upon the cabin of an erratic and reclusive Old Man. What starts off as cordial conversation soon turns dangerous as it becomes clear that one or both of them might be hiding a terrifying secret.

Exclusive: Christiana Dell’Anna (Gomorrah), John Lithgow (The Crown), David Morse (The Green Mile), Rolando Villazón (La Bohèmme) and more will star in an Untitled Cabrini Film from Alejandro Monteverde.
The film tells the story of Francesca Cabrini, one of the greatest entrepreneurs of the 19th Century, who began with nothing and created the largest multinational charitable empire the world had ever known, her accomplishments equaling those of Vanderbilt and Rockefeller. While Cabrini was faced in her time with the sexism and virulent anti-Italian bigotry of 19th century America, she overcame every obstacle through relentless perseverance and business skill, eventually building schools, orphanages and hospitals that transformed the lives of immigrants worldwide.
The Untitled Cabrini Film also stars Montserrat Espadalé, Romana Maggiora Vergano, Patch Darragh, Jeremy Bobb, Virginia Bocelli, Andrew Polk, and Giampiero Judica.
The Francesca Films pic’s producers include Academy Award and BAFTA Award winner Jonathan Sanger and Leo Severino. Rod Barr wrote the script; he collaborated on the story with TIFF’s People’s Choice Award winner Monteverde.
The film is currently in production in New York; the shoot will wrap up in Rome this fall. The project was the brainchild of financier Eustace Wolfington, whose passion for the story of Francesca Cabrini began over 60 years ago.
“The minute I learned of Cabrini’s life story, I realized this was a story that deserved to be brought to the big screen,” said Wolfington. “As a pioneer of human rights long before today, her story will be an inspiration to today’s pioneers of human rights which makes her story and unprecedented accomplishments as relevant today as ever.”
“As an immigrant myself, I am honored to be able to shine a light on the astonishing story of a true warrior of social justice who transformed the lives of immigrants worldwide,” said Monteverde. “Cabrini was a pioneer of women’s empowerment, making her story as relevant today as in the 1890’s. This picture – like Cabrini herself – is surprising, courageous, gritty… and deeply inspirational.”
“In a time when the achievements of women in every sphere of life have inspired a new generation, it is fascinating to contemplate the work of Francesca Cabrini, an Italian immigrant who came to New York in 1889. She would fit perfectly as a leader in today’s world,” added Sanger.
Christiana Dell’Anna’s film credits include Tensione superficiali, Mr. Happiness and more. She has appeared on the small screen in such series as Gomorrah (HBO Max) and Trust (FX). She’s represented in the U.S. by Cavalry Media, and by Volver Consulenze Artistiche in Italy.
A two-time Oscar nominee, John Lithgow recently earned his 13th Emmy nomination for his supporting turn in HBO’s reimagining of Perry Mason. He’ll next appear in Showtime’s Dexter revival, reprising his role as Arthur Mitchell (aka The Trinity Killer), and in FX’s The Old Man. His recent film credits include Bombshell, Late Night and Pitch Perfect 3. Additional TV credits include The Crown, Trial & Error and 3rd Rock from the Sun. Lithgow is repped by UTA, Anonymous Content and attorney Don Steele at Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller & Gellman.
Two-time Emmy nominee David Morse will soon appear in Netflix drama The Chair, opposite Sandra Oh. His recent TV credits include The Good Lord Bird, Blindspot, The Morning Show, The Deuce and Escape at Dannemora. Recent film credits include Thank You for Your Service and Concussion. Morse is repped by UTA, Kipperman Management, Arcieri & Associates, and attorney Diane Golden at Katz Golden Lerner.
Rolando Villazón is an opera singer and director whose credits include Mozart in Prague: Rolando Villazón on Don Giovanni, La Bohèmme and La Traviata. He is repped by Columbia Artists Management.
Monteverde is represented by Sentient Entertainment and attorney Sean A. Marks of Marks Law Group.

We may be almost past swimsuit season (at least in the northern half of the Us), but it’s never too late to get moving and get healthy. And though those New Year’s resolutions are several months away, that goal’s on the mind of this new movie’s title heroine (who just happens to be based on a real person…but don’t let that deter you). Another big motivator is the big event in the title. And yes, the flick covers all the dieting, training, and various ‘prep’ work, but it’s really about so much more. As the ads promise this story is very funny at times, propelled by the talents of a most captivating comedy actress, but there’s more to this than pratfalls and slapstick. This is a story of a woman who wants to do more than win the race or even just cross the finish line.

Back at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, one of Amazon Studios’ biggest acquisitions to date was the dramedy Brittany Runs a Marathon. On the surface, it appears like the sort of movie that Sundance generates each year. A mixture of comedy and drama, with a comic actor or actress showing their range/finally being given a chance to shine. However, while all of that is true, the flick is so much more than just that. Not only is Jillian Bell absolutely aces in the film, every moment that could feel cliched here is handled in a fresh an unexpected way. This is one of the most satisfying works of the summer. The film follows Brittany Forgler (Bell), a 27 year old woman who would charitably be described as a hot mess by those who know her, and even by those who don’t. She’s all about having a good time, but largely seems to just exist,...

"You changing your life was never about your weight." Amazon Studios has launched the first trailer for Brittany Runs a Marathon, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Paul Downs Colaizzo. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, where it won the biggest prize of the festival - the main competition Audience Award. She soon starts training for the NYC Marathon, which is no easy task. This inspiring, humorous, uplifting film tells the "story of a party girl who finally finds real friends — and dignity — by taking control of her future, one city block at a time." The cast includes Jennifer Dundas, Patch Darragh, Alice Lee, Erica Hernandez, Michaela Watkins, and introducing Utkarsh Ambudkar as Jern.

Cam is the latest indie thriller from Jason Blum and Blumhouse Entertainment. Screened earlier this year at Austin's Fantastic Fest and Montreal's Fantasia Film Festival, Cam looks at the life of a cam-girl and the ramifications of selling your soul, online. This film picked up a "Best Screenplay" award and "Best First Feature" award at Fantasia. And, Cam stars Madeline Brewer of The Handmaid's Tale fame, along with: Patch Darragh ("Everything Sucks!"), Melora Walters, Devin Druid and many others. The film's official, first trailer is here and so is the official poster. The movie poster is an interesting one. The graphic shows Alice (Brewer) on a split screen, with distorted features. The character looks crazed as she is stretched by the screen. And, this is one show you will not want to miss. The plot, itself, involves online pornography. Alice performs for others, to make a living. But, she loses...

The internet. The great democratiser. In the case of sex work it has allowed women to take control of how, when and where they work – mainly through cam sites like Adultwork, Chaturbate, Mfc and more…But despite the ease of access to a performance outlet, the audience has access too – to performers lives, their personalities, etc. Yet there has to be boundaries. Which is why many sex workers create online personas, some using their own character traits others inventing entirely new ones, to create an extra layer of protection between their online life and their offline life.
Very much a “what if?” tale, Cam takes that idea of created personas and asks what if our online personas took on a life of their own?

There’s a moment in director Daniel Goldhaber’s Cam where Alice (Madeline Brewer) is talking to her younger brother Jordan (Devin Druid) about the previous evening’s performance on web-cam site Free Live Girls. She moved past sex gimmicks towards the dark world of snuff film aesthetics and it worked to move her up more leaderboard spots in one session than she ever had before. He gives her a congratulatory fist-bump and asks whether she’s told their mother (Melora Walters’ Lynne) what her new lucrative job actually is yet. Alice says “No” because she’s waiting to crack the top-ten in order to prove it isn’t a lark — that she’s actually good at it. She says it in earnest, simultaneously admitting the stigma surrounding porn without delegitimizing it as a profession.
It seems like such a small thing, but that single exchange sets the stage for how the audience reacts.

In Daniel Goldhaber and Isa Mazzei’s paranoid thriller “Cam,” an erotic webcam performer finds her followers stolen by a doppelganger who hijacks her channel, pushes the sexual envelope farther, and otherwise seems determined to destroy her life. Call it identity theft of a sexy, possibly supernatural kind.
There’s not much depth to this low-budget but resourcefully flashy enterprise, which is hyperactive in presentation to the brink of being grating. Nor is there much (if any) satisfactory resolution to the central mystery. But the combination of a sex-worker milieu, suspense mechanics and speed-of-the-internet pace should appeal to genre fans looking for something different — but not too different — from the norm. It certainly worked for Fantasia jurors, who gave the film their best screenplay and first feature prizes, and Netflix buyers, who acquired “Cam” from the Montreal-based genre fest.

Netflix is getting a head start on festival season by acquiring the thriller “Cam.”
The film, which premiered at this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, stars Madeline Brewer (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Patch Darragh (“The First Purge”), Melora Walters (“Venom”), and Devin Druid (“13 Reasons Why”).
The horror movie is a technology-driven psychological thriller set in the world of webcam porn. It follows Alice (Brewer), an ambitious camgirl, who wakes up one day to discover she’s been replaced on her show with an exact replica of herself. As this copy begins to push the boundaries of Alice’s internet identity, the control that Alice has over her life, and the men in it, vanishes. While she struggles to regain what she’s lost, she slowly finds herself drawn back to her show and to the mysterious person who has taken her place.

Finally, someone has made a film about the existential horror of getting locked out of your account, and the horror is all too real. Daniel Goldhaber’s “Cam” also touches on a number of other digital crises (e.g. the way in which the internet’s short attention span requires people to constantly reaffirm their own existence), but this clever and unnerving mind-fuck of a movie is at its most effective when tracing the uneasy shadow relationships we share with our online personas.
It’s one thing to curate some kind of identity on social media — to make ourselves appear more aloof and desirable than we they are in the flesh — but what happens when the projection of who we are begins to subsume the reality? What happens when our avatars take on lives of their own? As Kurt Vonnegut put it: “We are what we pretend to be, so...

A totally dumb, prequel. No, really it’s dumb, but enjoyable mayhem while it lasts.
Damn. The First Purge, the fourth film in The Purge franchise takes the annual night of government sanctioned murder back to its boneheaded roots in a blaxploitation battle royale that’s about as subtle as a sledgehammer. So, no change there. And up and coming director Gerard McMurray, hot off his Sundance Film Festival nominated drama Black Sands (2017) helms the horror juggernaut that bumps and grinds on the edges of Trumpian social warfare before going full hack and slash mode on the impoverished streets of New York’s Staten Island. A handful of urban stereotypes – find themselves fighting masked Nazis in the Park Tower projects. A pulpy allegory of a divided America in 2018, perhaps… The Purge has always been a sharp-eyed concept, no doubt. But one that seems to continually squander its potential albeit entertainingly so.

For the fourth film in the horror series, James DeMonaco creates an explicitly racist motive for his annual crime free-for-all
James DeMonaco’s Purge series is premised around an annual 12-hour period in which crime – including murder – is legal. This prequel to the hugely successful dystopian horror series explains the why and how of the social experiment. Devised by Dr May Updale (Marisa Tomei), who declares her interest as “psychological” rather than “political”, the controlled experiment is quickly co-opted by ruling rightwing political party New Founding Fathers’ chief of staff Arlo Sabian (Patch Darragh) into a chilling evening of sanctioned ethnic cleansing.
The experiment is confined to New York’s Staten Island, chosen because of its largely black and Latino “demographic”, with residents offered a stipend of $5,000 to remain on the island, and bonus cash for active participation. Sabian is furious to discover that this socioeconomic group is “not proceeding...
