For 2018, Fantastic Fest played host to over 100 horror, sci-fi, and action-themed feature and short films, and Daily Dead had the opportunity to see numerous titles while in Austin for all the movie-related festivities. For today’s review round-up, here are my thoughts on the supernatural-driven tale of Indian horror, Tumbbad, the psycho-sexual thriller Cam, and Winston Azzopardi’s survival horror film (with a twist), The Boat.
Tumbbad: I feel slightly uncultured, but Tumbbad from directors Adesh Prasad and Rahi Anil Barve is my first foray into Indian genre filmmaking (save for some over-the-top clips from some ’80s movies I viewed in passing while at various Drafthouses over the years), but based on their efforts here, I’m an instant fan, and I hope Tumbbad leads to more projects for this directorial team, because they both prove that they have the chops to deliver lavish, concept-heavy themes without sacrificing all the...

Fantastic Fest 2018 Interview: Star and Co-Writer Joe Azzopardi on the Cinematic Journey of The Boat
While you may get some instant survival vibes when reading the premise of Winston Azzopardi’s The Boat, there are also some other genre elements at play that begin to reveal themselves the more time we spend upon the eponymous water vehicle, making The Boat a quietly surprising viewing experience.
While at Fantastic Fest 2018, Daily Dead caught up with Joe Azzopardi, the star and co-writer of The Boat, to discuss how this project evolved from a previous short film he had collaborated with his dad on, and how they came together for this feature project. Joe also discussed some of the physical challenges he faced during production, as well as finding ways to tap into his character, who has very minimal dialogue, but appears in every single scene of The Boat, which wasn’t an easy feat by any means.
I’m sure you’ve heard a few comparisons to Dead Calm so far,...

"I am sick of this game!" The first official trailer has launched for a creepy new sailing survival film titled simply The Boat, the feature directorial debut of producer Winston Azzopardi. Starring his own son Joe Azzopardi as the sailor, the film is about a captain who goes out to see and finds an abandoned vessel, but discovers there's something mysterious going on. He ends up locked inside the head of a sailboat which is heading at full steam on autopilot. Where to? There's only one way to find out. This looks creepy and very clever, a bit more than just another lost at sea sailing movie. This is premiering at Fantastic Fest later in the month, which is why this trailer has been released to build some buzz for its premiere there. Worth a watch. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Winston Azzopardi's The Boat, direct from YouTube...

Exclusive: Here’s the first trailer for low-budget thriller The Boat, which will get its world premiere at Austin’s upcoming Fantastic Fest.
The well-sold feature was written by father-and-son team Winston and Joe Azzopardi, with the former directing and the latter starring in the movie. It follows a lone fisherman who boards an abandoned sailboat. Finding no signs of life, he emerges back on deck to discover that his own boat has disappeared, and a nightmarish journey ensues as he becomes imprisoned inside as the vessel presses on into unknown waters.
Deals have previously closed in France, Germany, Benelux, Scandinavia, Latin America, South Korea and more. Winston Azzopardi was a co-producer on Brad Pitt-starrer Troy.
