What do you do when you need more than half a dozen classic 1950s-era Ferrari and Maserati race cars to make a film, but the originals today would sell at auction for $30 million or $40 million each? If you’re Ferrari director Michael Mann, you build them from scratch, of course, with historically faithful details to make even the most strident car lover grin with approval.
The film, which stars Adam Driver as Ferrari founder and racer Enzo Ferrari, re-creates the 1957 Mille Miglia, the famous 1,000-kilometer Italian road race that ran from Brescia, through the Futa Pass, onto Rome and back to Brescia.
The production design of Ferrari was exacting: Everything was scrupulously studied, detailed and, eventually, reproduced for the film — from the signage on the Mille Miglia starting ramp in Brescia to the wheel lugs of a Ferrari 801 F1 car, on down to pasta company Buitoni’s logo on the...

A lot of directors make great movies — but Michael Mann creates great experiences, films that give the audience an almost tactile sense of what his characters are feeling and thinking down to the smallest perceptible detail. In his debut feature “Thief” he took the viewer through every aspect of safecracking, from the tools and the process to the precise cocktail of emotions the title character felt in both moments of success and catastrophic failure. In “Manhunter,” Mann found visual and aural corollaries for the experience of an FBI profiler putting himself in the mindset of a serial killer, persuading the viewer to link their perspective to that of the profiler in the same way the profiler was linking his to his subject. Mann’s greatest film, “Heat,” takes the raw materials of a cops-and-robbers action flick and approaches them so realistically that it takes three hours to cover all the...

Over a long career that stretches back 25 years, stuntman and stunt coordinator-turned-second-unit-director and actor Darrin Prescott has choreographed many a spectacular car chase and race in such testosterone-fueled movies as “Drive,” “Deadpool 2,” “Baby Driver” and “The Bourne Ultimatum,” which won him a Screen Actors Guild award as part of the stunt ensemble.
But when director James Mangold called him up to play famous racer Bob Bondurant and supervise the second-unit action crew for “Ford v Ferrari,” he knew it’d be a special job.
“He loved what we’d done on ‘Baby Driver,’ and when I asked him how we were going to handle all the classic race cars on this, he just said, ‘We’re going to build ‘em,’” Prescott says.
This was music to Prescott’s ears, as “Ford v Ferrari” chronicles the story of race car legends Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) and Ken Miles (Christian Bale...

And the Oscars go to … the Mat-Towercam Twin Peek, the Biscuit Jr., the Mova Facial Performance Capture System, the Ilm PhysBAM Destruction System and the early conceptualization of sparse-tiled voxel data structures.
That may be Greek to most of us, but it makes sense to the Academy’s Scientific and Technical Awards Committee, which on Tuesday announced that those achievements, and 16 others, will be the recipients of this year’s Scientific and Technical Academy Awards.

Robert Nagle was still racing cars professionally when he saw Ronin for the first time. The Euro-set chases in the 1998 Robert De Niro thriller were a massive undertaking that involved over 300 stunt professionals and would go on to become lionized as the best of all time. Like most, Bullitt was a favorite from his childhood, but Nagle was awed by what the Ronin team accomplished with a few Peugeots and the tunnels of Paris. “It’s the most realistic. They really sold the speed, had some really great drivers doing those pieces, and just the way they shot it, it came out spectacular. I walked away going, ‘How did they do that?’. I needed to figure out how they did some of those pieces because they were done so well.” Many of us had the same connection — a sense of wonder at the raw ability of the sequences to pummel adrenal glands marked by that natural, amateur...

Robert Nagle studied mechanical engineering and racecar design before becoming a professional race driver. But when he found out that some of the other drivers were working in the film industry, it piqued his interest. Said Nagle, “What I found was that it fulfilled a creative side of me that I didn’t really realize was there.” He left the racing world and hasn’t looked back, doing stunt driving for a number of films, including The Dark Knight Rises and Drive. One piece of equipment he’s been driving lately is the Biscuit Rig Jr., a driveable platform developed by Allan Padelford …...
