Heading into Wednesday’s sixth episode of “Survivor: Island of the Idols,” Karishma Patel had overwhelming 17/10 odds of being eliminated after being on the chopping block for weeks. This ultimate underdog managed to survive the recent tribe swap despite being at a three-to-five numbers disadvantage along with former Lairo members Tom Laidlaw (who was voted out) and Dean Kowalski. But was Karishma’s time finally up? And what was the “powerful, life changing moment” hinted at in the preview trailer regarding Jamal Shipman and Jack Nichting?

So far, the 39th season of “Survivor: Island of the Idols,” whose big twist is getting so-called mentoring from super-players Rob Mariano and Sandra Diaz-Twine, has been a mixed affair. Consider that the last two contestants voted out at tribal council — Vince Moua and Chelsea Walker — left with immunity idols in their pockets. It seemed like they were more keen on actually getting one than figuring out the optimal time to use it. Oh, and Walker also committed a no-no — blantantly flauting her budding showmance with teammate Dean Kowalski.

But episode 5, “Don’t Bite the Hand that Feeds You,” was the most frustrating so far. Not only did Rob and Sandra get a holiday from doing the jobs as tutors, but viewers were forced to endure a challenge reward that was a shameless plug for Applebee’s chain restaurant.

If CBS’s latest spoiler-filled preview trailer for “Survivor: Island of the Idols” is any indication, it looks like Wednesday’s sixth episode will be a real tearjerker. Something happens between tribe members Jamal Shipman and Jack Nichting that’s described as a “powerful, life-changing moment.” In the promo video (watch above), Jack, a 23-year-old graduate student from Virginia, declares, “It was really cool to share a very human moment because it brought us together as friends.” And Jamal, a 33-year-old college administrator from Rhode Island, proclaims, “I will remember that for the rest of my life.”

In “Survivor,” a tribal swap can be the kiss of death for a once powerful player at the same time that it can be a glimmer of hope for someone at the bottom of their old tribe’s totem pole. When the Lairo and Vokai tribes were shaken up on episode 5 of “Island of the Idols,” the five original Vokai members that were swapped to Lairo earned the luckiest of draws. That luck earned them the comfort of feeling safe after they lost the immunity challenge and were tasked with voting one of the three original Lairo members out. The decision to eliminate Tom Laidlaw wasn’t easy, but appears to have been orchestrated by Kellee Kim and Janet Carbin, the two players I’m now considering the most powerful in the game.

I don’t know about you, but the 39th season of “Survivor” is getting on my nerves. Yes, it was probably a good time to do a tribe swap if only to shake off castaway complacency — as exhibited by Vince Moua not even thinking about using his short-term idol after his name was written down in a previous tribal council and Chelsea Walker flaunting her budding showmance with Dean Kowalski and getting duly blindsided. As a result, both are long gone now.
But episode 5, titled “Don’t Bite the Hand That Feeds You,” really got me scowling. Not only did Rob Mariano and Sandra Diaz-Twine get a holiday off from mentoring. We the viewers were subjected to what basically was a blatant commercial mid-show for Applebee’s instead. I don’t know about you, but if someone told me I would get “the biggest reward of the season” and it...

On the 39th season of “Survivor,” Lairo member Karishma Patel might not have nine lives but somehow she keeps avoiding being voted out by her tribe despite having her name written down in each of four tribal councils. She doesn’t contribute at all in physical challenges or help much around camp. In fact, she often is a liability for her team and holds them back from winning rewards and immunity. But for whatever reason, the decision makers are keeping her around while banishing the bigger threats.
But on the October 23 episode, a tribe swap took place and a new Lairo tribe emerged with three original members and five contestants from the old Vokai tribe. During an rewards challenge that involved two players tied together and crawling over mounds of sad, she relied on Noura Salman to basically use her own body to pull her to the finish line.

“I guess I naively felt that Karishma was the one that was going home tonight,” admitted Tom Laidlaw after having his torch snuffed by Jeff Probst during Wednesday’s episode of “Survivor: Island of the Idols” (watch above). This 60-year-old former NHL player from Ontario, Canada went into tribal council at a three-to-five numbers disadvantage following the random tribe swap, along with former Lairo players Dean Kowalski and Karishma Patel. The five former Vokai players who switched camps with a lucky majority were Janet Carbin, Kellee Kim, Jack Nichting, Noura Salman and Jamal Shipman.

Hey, "Survivor" fans. Tonight, October 23, 2019, a brand new episode did indeed air, and another unlucky contestant did get sent packing at the end. Tonight's episode kicked off with Dean expressing that he felt heavily blindsided by his tribe sending his girlfriend Chelsea home at the last tribal council. Dean was scrambling around trying to figure out who was the mastermind behind the vote to get Chelsea out. Missy told the private cams, "Yeah, it was me, Dean. I'm the one who got Chelsea voted out." It was a pretty funny segment, especially since Missy lied to Dean's face about it. Next, host Jeff Probst showed up to reveal that some people would be switching tribes. They did it by drawing straws. Afterwards, they did a Rewards Challenge. In this challenge, two tribemembers had to crawl on their bellies to a finish line. Then the rest of the tribe had to...

It’s that time again, “Survivor” fans — “Drop your buffs” time, that is. Just when we were starting to remember who was living at what camp, Jeff Probst came along and mixed things up with a tribe swap. Vokai went into Wednesday’s episode with a nine-to-seven numbers advantage over Lairo, meaning all of the success they had at the immunity challenges (winning three of four) was squandered after the tribe swap evened things out at eight members apiece. Which contestants took advantage of the switcheroo and whose torch was snuffed by Jeff because of it?

We really need to discuss the Lairo female alliance. Prior to episode 4, we were calling Missy Byrd and Chelsea Walker the two most powerful players in the game. Now, as we look forward to episode 5, Chelsea’s been eliminated and Missy plummets to the bottom of these updated power rankings. What happened? To keep it short: Missy made a horrible decision that marks the beginning of the end for the Lairo women’s reign.
In their absence, I raise Tommy Sheehan and the men of Vokai to the top along with that tribe’s most promising female, Kellee Kim. As a tribe, Vokai now heads into the tribe swap with a 9 to 7 numbers advantage and two of its members (Kellee and Jamal Shipman) have hidden immunity idols. Because of Missy’s blunder, Lairo is now more split than ever–Dean Kowalski was blindsided by his entire tribe and lost his budding showmance,...

In our first power rankings of Season 39, the “Survivor: Island of the Idols” cast was dominated by the women and in this week’s update they’re still at top with only minor switches in placement. Missy Byrd and Chelsea Walker are leading a five woman alliance at Lairo while Janet Carbin and Lauren Beck join with the most powerful man in the game, Tommy Sheehan, for control at Vokai. In that previous ranking we correctly deemed Vince Moua as one of the more vulnerable players prior to his boot in episode 3, knowing he was on the outside of the female alliance that sacrificed him in order to maintain their power in the gender balance.
Meanwhile at the bottom of the game, Jamal Shipman and Dan Spilo are at odds over who is playing the game harder with both men carrying a huge target on their backs at Vokai. Unlike the men of Vokai,...

Vince Moua, the third castaway voted out of “Survivor: Island of the Idols,” was heartbroken after having his torch snuffed by host Jeff Probst in Wednesday’s episode. This 27-year-old admissions counselor from California had gone through a “Survivor” boot camp like no other when Sandra Diaz-Twine and Rob Mariano tasked him with stealing fire from the other camp. Vince succeeded at his mission, stealing ashes since the fire had burned out, and won a hidden immunity idol for his efforts. Unfortunately, he left with that idol in his pocket as he was voted out at tribal council.
“I was just blindsided, I guess you can say,” Vince said in his exit interview at the end of the third episode. He confessed that he brought his idol with him inside of his water bottle and was “really thinking” about using it, but ultimately decided not to. Watch the video above.

On the second episode of “Survivor” 39, one theme became very clear — the female castaways are large, in charge and not messing around. From making fire and winning physical and mental challenges to swaying the votes of their tribe mates, the ladies have been stand-outs.
But the best move so far, according to the show’s fans, was when nanny Lauren Beck rightfully targeted the charismatic law student Molly Byton as a threat after she swiftly wrapped two Voika males — Jamal Shipman and Jack Nichting — around her finger, earning the nickname “Parvati 2.0.” Lauren convinced two other Voika underdogs, Noura Salman and Jason Linden, to vote for Molly and others followed. As the blindsided Molly said during her exit interview, “I’m not sure exactly where I went wrong or what happened or how this tide turned. I guess I got cocky and I’ve been humbled.”

This week’s “Survivor” episode is not for the squeamish. In CBS’s spoiler-filled preview trailer (watch above), Karishma Patel accidentally cuts her hand to the bone while prepping a coconut. “Oh my God,” she exhales. “I can see my bone. Guys, I’m getting really light-headed.” Surprisingly, not a single one of Karishma’s fellow Lairo tribe members comes to her aid as she writhes around on the ground in pain. Instead, they’re seen casually chatting amongst themselves by the fire.

Over the first two weeks of “Survivor: Island of the Idols,” a powerful girls alliance has formed on the Lairo tribe with Karishma Patel, Elizabeth Beisel, Missy Byrd, Elaine Stott and Chelsea Walker. That means the remaining four Lairo guys are outnumbered … unless they do something about it. In a sneak peek of Wednesday’s third episode (warning: spoilers ahead), Aaron Meredith hatches a plan to convince Dean Kowalski, Tom Laidlaw and Vince Moua that they need to work together. While most are on board, Vince seems slightly skeptical. Watch CBS’s promo video above.

How great were the women on both the Orange and Purple teams on the second episode of “Survivor: Island of the Idols”? We will count the ways in just a second. But let’s focus on how lame some of the male castaways were — primarily Lairo’s Aaron Meredith and Vokai’s Jamal Shipman — when they acted as if they were somehow large and in charge and then expressed shock when their tribe mates put their own plans into effect without them. Jamal was so cocky, he took a midday nap instead of staying in the loop as others pushed forward their own agenda before that night’s tribal council.
But while he was sleeping, Lauren Beck put into motion her effort to block the over-confident power trio of Molly Byton — aka “Parvati 2.0” — Jack Nichting and Jamal from controlling the game. Lauren had a gut feeling that pretty Molly, with...

After two episodes, “Survivor” Season 39 is off to a promising start. Both tribes have already attended tribal council so we have a clear idea of who is at the top of each, calling the shots and setting the tone for how their tribe will maneuver through the first stage of the game. In the season premiere, Ronnie Bardah thought he was on the top of the world but received a rude awakening at tribal council when he was voted out nearly unanimously by his Lairo tribe members and due in large part to a strong female alliance. In Wednesday’s second episode, Molly Byman was ousted for sticking too closely to the men of the Vokai tribe, leading the other women to cut her loose sooner rather than later

Wednesday’s season premiere of “Survivor: Island of the Idols” was one of the show’s strongest, certainly of the last 10 seasons, but quite possibly among the best in its 19-year history. We are so high on the premiere that it’s giving us hope that producers have course-corrected some of the poor editing and meandering storylines that plagued the last few seasons. Four seasons ago Ben Driebergen‘s eventual win was blatantly obvious from the jump due to his heroic editing and just last season the “Edge of Extinction” twist corrupted the tail end of a season where the story was forced to focus on endgame players that would eventually lose to Chris Underwood, a player who was in the game proper for only 13 of 39 days,

We don't have to worry that Survivor will be voted off the CBS schedule this year since the venerable reality series has already been renewed. The 40th season is expected to begin airing early in 2020. While the show continues to do well in the ratings for CBS, the numbers have dwindled over time. Sandra Diaz-Twine and Rob Mariano are two of the most intelligent “Survivor” winners of all time, which is why CBS invited them back to serve as mentors in Season 39. Back in 2000, during the first season of “Survivor” that took place in Borneo, a semi-tradition was born. The first two contestants to be voted out by their tribes were Sonja Christopher, 63, and B.B. Anderson, 64. Early in the game, Sonja hurt her foot while B.B. took his tribemates to task about their lack of work ethic. At least three truisms about the show were established on the first episode. One, don’t be weak. Two, don’t be bossy. And three don’t be a senior citizen.
