July Jung made one of the best recent debuts of recent times in Korean cinema back in 2014 with her “A Girl at My Door”, a gritty and superbly acted social drama which screened in the Un Certain Regard category at Cannes Film Festival. It went on to receive much critical acclaim and multiple awards at film festivals, with both the director and lead actress Bae Doona receiving praise and accolades for their work. Jung instantly became a director to watch out for but little did we know that it would take eight years before she would step behind the camera again for “Next Sohee”, which closed the International Critics' Week at Cannes this year.

Burning Sun Scandal: How Two Female Reporters And Late Idol Goo Hara Exposed K-pop’s Biggest Sex Crimes ( Photo Credit – Twitter )
The K-pop genre has taken the world by storm, mesmerizing millions across the globe with its well-crafted music videos, high-energy performances, and, not to be missed, the irresistible charisma of the idols. However, what we see often differs from what it appears to be. Situations are direr than they seem, things are more dangerous than they look, and people are more horrifying and complex than they pretend to be. Such was the case with the Burning Sun scandal, also known as Burning Sun Gate, the dark truth of which was uncovered in 2019.
The tragedy that began way before it was brought to the public’s attention, was an entertainment and sex scandal in South Korea, which involved several celebrities, including K-pop idols of popular groups and police officials. A...

A group of misfits who solve traffic crimes and frauds—that’s the premise of Disney+’s new Korean drama Crash. I started watching the show with little expectations, but boy did it surprise me. Backed by an amazing ensemble cast, Crash goes from the Tci members catching small-time criminals to solving planned murders real quick. Here’s a quick recap of the events that unfolded in the first episode.
Spoilers Ahead
What does the Tci do?
Tci stands for Traffic Crime Investigations, a police division that gets little recognition from the other departments. Jung Chae-Min, a veteran detective who once worked in the crime department, founded this division. Tci’s star is undoubtedly Min-So-Hee, who is an outstanding close combat fighter and an even better driver. Her expertise behind the wheel is something that makes this department thrive. The other members are Woo Dong-Ki and Eo Hyun-Kyung, who are mostly just there,...

Justin Lin's 2016 film "Star Trek Beyond" came at a strange juncture in "Star Trek" history. Paramount had two enormously successful "Star Trek" films in 2009 and 2013, both taking the ordinarily talky and contemplative franchise into a quicker, more violent, action-packed direction. Audiences flocked to those movies, both helmed by J.J. Abrams, enjoying the fact that "Star Trek" now more closely resembled "Star Wars." One year before "Beyond" was released, however, the Disney-backed Lucasfilm released "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," the first "Star Wars" theatrical feature film since 2008. "The Force Awakens" was a massive success, and the public's itch for space action was now being satisfyingly scratched. It, too, was helmed by J.J. Abrams.
With real "Star Wars" back in the public eye, audiences no longer needed the supposed "fake 'Star Wars'" action that the new Trek films provided. "Beyond," as a result, was not as massive a hit as its forebears,...

Mario Bava’s The Whip and the Body is a Technicolor fever dream of violent, unquenchable desire that extends beyond the grave. It’s also a gothic tale steeped in murder and revenge, with added elements of sadomasochistic eroticism and just a whiff of necrophilia. Wedged between Black Sabbath and Blood and Black Lace in Bava’s canon, The Whip and the Body shares those films’ consummate use of color cinematography to refine mood and convey disturbing shades of atmosphere. Acting as his own cinematographer, with credited Dp Ubaldo Terzano working as de facto camera operator, Bava revels in a riotous palette of sickly greens, otherworldly purples, and sanguine reds.
The opening of The Whip and the Body brings to mind Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, an equally disturbing tale of mad love that was celebrated by the surrealists. Heathcliffe stand-in Kurt Menliff (Christopher Lee) returns to his seaside castle...

In a 2000 Star Wars Insider interview with "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back" director Irvin Kershner, he admits that he was initially reluctant to take on the project: "'Star Wars' was one of the greatest successes we ever had in film, and I felt to follow it would only be to make a film not as good." Even the studio did not want him to get involved with the sequel, feeling that Kershner was "too old, because it's a young person's film." He also knew next to nothing about special effects.
But as much of a success as "Star Wars" became, it was not initially received that way. In the same interview, Kershner recalls viewing a trailer at Francis Ford Coppola's New Year's Eve party: "We were all baffled, to tell you the truth. We did not believe that he was going to get away with this. We all had...

The premise of writer/director Jason Yu’s feature debut Sleep is great. Soo-jin (Jung Yu-mi) and Hyun-su (Lee Sun-kyun) are expecting parents living in an apartment with paper thin walls and contending with a lot of stress. Their downstairs neighbour complains about the barking of their dog Pepper, Soo-jin is still working in an office despite her rapidly approaching due date, and Hyung is growing disillusioned with his acting career.
It’s hardly surprising, then, when Soo-jin wakes one night to find her husband sitting stiffly at the edge of the bed, experiencing an odd bout of sleep talking. “Someone’s inside” he ominously declares before comedically falling back to sleep, leaving his worried wife apprehensive and paranoid. She searches the house and finds nothing, but her husband’s words hang heavy over the drama to come.

Heading into the 2023 Video Music Awards, all eyes were on Taylor Swift, and she delivered. Swift swept the live awards show, winning all four of her categories that were announced during the live MTV broadcast.
Out of the 11 nominations Swift received, she won in all categories but two. Song of the Summer went to Jung Kook ft. Latto for “Seven,” and Olivia Rodrigo won Best Editing for “vampire.” Neither of these categories were presented during the live broadcast of the awards show.
But the rest — which included best pop, song of the year, best direction, artist of the year, show of the summer, album of the year, best visual effects, best cinematography and the highly coveted video of the year — all went to Swift. In fact, Swift’s Video of the Year award marks the fourth time the singer and songwriter has received this award, the most of any artist in VMAs history.

Is it something in the air? At this year’s Venice Film Festival, the unofficial theme appears to be hit men. David Fincher’s “The Killer” is all about an icy methodical professional executioner. Woody Allen’s “Coup de Chance” turns on an act of murder-for-hire. And now, just in time to steal the buzz from both those movies, we have Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man,” a screwball philosophical thriller comedy noir about the world’s unlikeliest undercover agent. He’s a one-of-a-kind movie hero, though in more ways than not he’s just like us.
The movie, which is based on a 2001 Texas Monthly article, tells the tale of Gary Johnson, a part-time college teacher who works for the New Orleans Police Department as a tech consultant, helping to make recordings of sting operations. Then he’s tapped to go undercover himself. Why would this even happen? The film...

The devoted culture warriors dedicated to taking Jason Aldean’s “Try That in a Small Town” to the top of the charts appear to have already grown bored of the song as it plummeted from Number One to Number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week.
Last week, the song topped the Hot 100, several months after its initial release in April, and following the arrival of a controversial music video that critics — from the country music world to academia — said promoted white nationalism and painted protests against racial injustice as lawless and violent.

This article has Oppenheimer spoilers.
At a whopping three hours and with a massively starry ensemble cast, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer covers a lot of ground. The largest area of ground possible, in a way, since it charts the birth of humanity’s ability to completely wipe itself out. So it’s understandable why some of Oppenheimer’s real life characters don’t get the chance to be as filled out as they could be.
One notable example is Jean Tatlock, brought to vibrant life by Florence Pugh. Tatlock is a communist Oppenheimer meets at a party, and who becomes his lover. Later Oppenheimer marries Kitty (Emily Blunt), who, when they met, was married to Richard Stewart Harrison. Kitty and Oppenheimer have two children, but later Oppenheimer resumes an affair with Jean. It ends tragically when a troubled Jean takes her own life.

“I have been dreaming of one day becoming an actor and I just want to say thank you so much,” an exasperated Jung Ho-yeon sighed through tears of joy in her native Korean when accepting this year’s Screen Actors Guild Award for dramatic female actor.
