NatGeo entered the Emmy race in a big way last year with its new anthology series “Genius.” The first season focused on the life of scientist Albert Einstein (Geoffrey Rush) and earned 10 nominations, including Best Limited Series, Best Movie/Mini Actor for Rush and Best Movie/Mini Directing for Ron Howard. The network hopes to repeat that success with the second season, which recounts the story of abstract painter Pablo Picasso. Gold Derby recently spoke with stars Antonio Banderas, Alex Rich and T.R. Knight. We also spoke with costume designer Sonu Mishra and makeup artist/hairstylist Davina Lamont, both of whom earned Emmy nominations for the show’s first season. “It’s a whole different world,” says costume designer Sonu Mishra, comparing the challenges of “Genius” season one to her work on season two. The second season of NatGeo’s anthology series stars Antonio Banderas as Spanish surrealist painter Pablo Picasso. It follows last year’s installment of the series, which focused on theoretical physicist Albert Einstein (Geoffrey Rush). Season one was about “the scientific world,” which made it “very restricted in a way for costumes,” but season two is set in “the bohemian world, where it’s all very much invented fashions.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Mishra above.

Fair to say, Antonio Banderas is the best thing about National Geographic’s second “Genius” series, “Picasso.” Born in Picasso’s home town in Malaga, Spain, 57 years ago, Banderas has turned down many offers to play Picasso since his 20s. But he finally stopped running away from the bigger-than-life abstract painter, and agreed to play the older Picasso from his 40s through his death at age 91 in Mougins, France in 1973, surrounded by loved ones. “He realizes… ‘this is my best painting’,” said Banderas.
The 11-part series was filmed in Hungary over five months, with Banderas arriving on set in the wee hours to endure five hours of prosthetic makeup. “It was exhausting,” said Banderas, who enjoyed creating Picasso with showrunner Ken Biller, makeup designer Davina Lamont, and costume designer Sonu Mishra. Banderas refused to see dailies, and said he only watched the first episode. It made him feel too self-conscious.

This season all five period costume design nominees are steeped in politics and culture. But the smart money’s on “The Crown,” Netflix’s most prestigious and expensive series to date. Here the wardrobe of Queen Elizabeth II (nominated Claire Foy) expressed both her regal power and personal sacrifice. Plus Peter Morgan’s historical drama also fills the “Downton Abbey” void.
However, don’t underestimate the power of Old Hollywood with “Feud: Bette and Joan,” in which the contrasting wardrobes underscored the bitter rivalry between Bette Davis (nominated Susan Sarandon) and Joan Crawford (nominated Jessica Lange).
But there’s a dark horse to be reckoned with: “The Handmaid’s Tale,” in which red dresses symbolized menstrual blood and political rage in capturing Margaret Atwood’s dystopian America along with the anti-Trump zeitgeist.
And the contrasting wardrobes of “Westworld” defined the best and worst of humanity inside the theme park and the futuristic programming center.
