Exclusive: French-Anglo director J.K. Amalou’s off-beat Cannes and Saint Tropez-set crime comedy Queen Of Diamonds has begun principal photography on the French Riviera.
Popular French comedy actress Frédérique Bel, whose credits include Serial (Bad) Weddings and Ducobu Président!, plays a woman who settles in Cannes after the murder of her British husband in London.
Leo Gregory co-stars as one-half of a British police detective team who travel to Cannes to question the woman about the theft of the precious gem The Queen of Diamonds, which might have been handled by her deceased husband. Andy Beckwith plays his sidekick.
Not convinced they are really policemen, she evades them and a cat-and-mouse caper ensues across the French Riviera, with her path crossing that of a veteran diamond trader, played by Christophe Lambert. Gabriella Wright also features in the cast as his wife.

Title: Qu’est-ce qu’on a fait au Bon Dieu? [Serial (Bad) Weddings] Director: Philippe de Chauveron Starring: Christian Clavier, Chantal Lauby, Ary Abittan, Medi Sadoun, Frédéric Chau, Noom Diawara, Frédérique Bel, Julia Piaton, Emilie Caen, Elodie Fontan, Pascal N’zonzi. The original title (Qu’est-ce qu’on a fait au Bon Dieu?) would literally translate: “Oh Lord, what did we do wrong?” which epitomises the general mood of the distraught parents of four girls who marry foreign men. Hence the ‘Serial (Bad) Weddings’ unfold a delightful and cathartic politically incorrect comedy, which gives voice to all those uncomfortable opinions that are received disdainfully when expressed by others, but that might be perceived differently when [ Read More ]

Whoa. We have a very weird trailer to debut for you today for a film that will be playing in the Toronto Film Festival 2010 Midnight Madness category, which is where all the dark, weird stuff goes. It's a French-Hong Kong film from filmmaking duo Julien Carbon & Laurent Courtiaud titled Red Nights (in English) starring Carrie Ng (Sex Medusa) and Frédérique Bel (Adèle Blanc-Sec). It's kind of a modern, bondage version of a Cantonese Opera. Here's how this was pitched to me: "If you are interested in lethal Chinese ladies with jade claws and moody French women with Mausers, you can take a look at our teaser." Need to say more? Watch the first trailer for Julien Carbon & Laurent Courtiaud's Red Nights: [flv:http://media2.firstshowing.net/firstshowing/rednights-firstfrenchtrailer-full.flv http://media2.firstshowing.net/firstshowing/rednights-firstfrenchtrailer-full.jpg 598 336] This shocking debut by director duo Carbon & Courtiaud is a seductive cat-and-mouse thriller set in Hong Kong, about one woman's obsessive desire to own ...

[Updated with an updated trailer.]
It seems that every year there is at least one film that hits the Tiff Midnight Madness program seemingly out of nowhere. Julien Carbon and Laurent Courtiaud's Franco Hong Kong co-production Red Nights is one of those films. Here's how programmer Colin Geddes describes it:
A pulpy, fetishistic thriller, Red Nights marks the startling directorial debut of Julien Carbon and Laurent Courtiaud, best known as the screenwriting team behind Hong Kong director Johnnie To's thriller Running Out of Time. Red Nights also boasts the long-overdue return of Hong Kong starlet Carrie Ng, famous for her sexy and deadly presence in such films as Naked Killer and Sex and Zen. Here she revels in her role as the jade-clawed Dragon Lady, equal parts seductress and psycho-sexual killer.

At this moment, in Paris, France's capital city, a 136 million years old egg had hatched on a shelf in the Jardin des plantes and a pterodactyl (a bird) just got out of it. According to a friend who is, apparently, more connected within the bowels of the horror news industry than I am, the following trailer has been making the rounds online since late last year. I guess I’m late the party — no pun intended — because I’ve never heard of Stephen Cafiero and Vincent Lobelle’s 2008 French horror/comedy “Vampire Party” until today. And despite the language barrier that exists between myself and the endlessly amusing trailer posted below, I’m actually kind of jazzed about it’s upcoming November 17th release date, which comes courtesy of Dark Sky Films. As it turns out, I have absolutely nothing to do that day. Coincidence? Not really. Then again, I’m not exactly a social butterfly, either. I suppose that goes without saying. Here’s what it’s all about: Best friends and hardcore partiers Sam (Patrick Mille), Alice (Frédérique Bel), and Prune...

We all love parties, and what could be more fun than one thrown by a group of vampires? We'll all find out come November 17th when Dark Sky Films releases the French horror/comedy Vampire Party (Les dents de la nuit) onto DVD. The film was co-directed by first-timers (according to IMDb) Stephen Cafiero and Vincent Lobelle, who also co-wrote the script with Jean-Patrick Benes and Allan Mauduit.
Here's the official synopsis from Amazon: Best friends and hardcore partiers Sam (Patrick Mille), Alice (Frédérique Bel), and Prune (Julie Fournier) have scored invitations to Medici Night, the legendary VIP bash held every year at a remote castle. But when they discover that this wild party is being thrown by an elite race of blood-crazed vampires, they'll have to stake, stab, slice, bludgeon, and blast their way out of a soiree where the hosts are thirsty and the bar is now open.

The Fantasia Festival has announced an exciting addition to the 2009 line-up. Les Lascars from French directors Albert Pereira Lazaro and Emmanuel Klotz is a feature-length animation that had an impressive screening during the Canne’s Critic’s Week. Les Lascars had its humble beginnings as a series of short one minute clips aired on France’s Canal Plus throughout 2000, and the years after. Due to its phenomenal success, this series satirizing everyday Parisian life, was renewed for a second season in 2007. To get ready for the silver screen, Les Lascars’ production team brushed up on their basics (biting and mature humor, exceptional animation and a colorful hip hop soundtrack) and sought out an outstanding cast of voice actors to bring their characters to life. You may be able to recognize the likes of: Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, Frédérique Bel and Izm. Les Lascars will be presented exclusively on: Friday July 17, in Concordia Hall Theater.

- What I'm seeing in the trailer for Emmanuel Mouret's Fais-moi plaisir! is pure Blake Edwards' The Party. His last two films, Change of Address and Shall We Kiss?, were released to art-house U.S. audiences, and this hybrid of comedy of manners/comedy of errors might also be headed the same way. Working with Frédérique Bel for a third straight project (she is the blonde girlfriend pushing him to cheat), the pic also features Judith Godrèche and Déborah François, who recently starred in Unmade Beds. Cineuropa.org translates the film's title as Please, Please Me!, this centres on Ariane (Bel), who believes that her partner (Mouret) is fantasizing about another woman. Hoping to free him from his obsession, she asks him to have an affair with the woman in question (Godrèche), who turns out to be the daughter of the French President! There follow several twists and

From it's Fearless Vampire Killers inspired opening credits onwards Stephen Cafiero and Vincent Lobelle's French vampire comedy keeps it's tongue firmly in cheek. An 'Airplane!' style spoof film with around 10 jokes a minute it cannot fail to entertain, despite several cringe inducing moments of complete stupidity. A deliberately clichéd plot sees three friends invited to a private party held in a spooky castle in the countryside. Sam Polisatokoniminsky (Patrick Mille) is a party animal who gets his kicks any which way he can, his friend Alice (Frédérique Bel) is a gorgeous, blonde aerobics instructor and Prune (Julie Fournier), is a tough minded business woman with a wild streak. After meeting a mysterious stranger (is there any other kind?) at a bar, they manage...

In Emmanuel Mouret’s quietly observant Un baiser s’il vous plaît / Shall We Kiss? (literally, "A Kiss, If You Please"), which opens today in Los Angeles, a young, good-looking couple, Émilie and Gabriel (Julie Gayet and Michaël Cohen), meet accidentally and are just about ready to go for some physical intimacy when Judith decides to tell Gabriel a story. See, she’s in a relationship. But then again, so is he. Well, the story in question is about another young, good-looking couple, Judith and Nicolas (Virginie Ledoyen, Mouret, top photo) who broke the barriers of social conventions and personal trust — Judith was married — by kissing one another. But it was all for a good cause. See, the young man was having trouble finding real intimacy with another woman — sex workers didn’t want to kiss him; he and his ditsy girlfriend (Frédérique Bel) were incompatible — so Judith, as his...
