Seven years after his mesmerizing sci-fi drama on extraterrestrial sex, “The Untamed,” genre-defying Mexican auteur Amat Escalante switches gears once again to try his hand at a sharp-edged, quasi-detective story with “Lost in the Night.” His approach expectedly deviates from a straightforward whodunit. Escalante rejects both simplified villainy and stainless heroism, crafting individuals with clear motivations who never stop to consider their actions through a moral filter. The result is an at times jarring but always intriguing enigma that escapes facile classification, especially because it tends to veer into absurdism.
In just a handful of years since his breakout role in Fernando Frías de la Parra’s “I’m No Longer Here,” Juan Daniel García Treviño has become a familiar face in Mexican cinema, usually playing a member of a criminal organization. Here, Escalante pushes against such typecasting and places him on the righteous side of the fence, as Emiliano, a...

Page did a moonsault of the ring post to Alex Reynolds on the arena floor. Matt Jackson tagged and blasted Alex with the locomotion Northern Lights suplexes. Page buckle bombed Alex Reynolds into the Elite’s corner, with the Bucks perfectly timing kicks to Reynolds’ head!

Lost in the Night (Amat Escalante). The more familiar one becomes with Cannes, the less one comes to expect anything like aesthetic coherence from it. Even if one accepts its nominal (or self-proclaimed) status as the standard-setter for international arthouse cinema, there’s still a fair amount of variation within its vast program. Which is to say that while one can lament the general calcification of festival-circuit aesthetics, the arbitrary programming decisions of Thierry Frémaux, or the often perplexing set of awards handed out each year, there are always films worth seeking out. In 1982, the French critic Serge Daney remarked that Antonioni’s Identification of a Woman and Godard’s Passion were part of cinema’s “secret factory”: that is, films which wouldn’t receive awards, but from which future directors would draw inspiration in years to come. The challenge with each edition, of course, is to discover which films those are.

Amat Escalante returned to the Croisette, exactly 10 years after the premiere of Heli, for which he won the Best Director award at this prestigious festival. With Lost in the Night (aka Perdidos en la noche), Escalante continues to address similar themes, linked to one of the most violent times in Mexico. The opposition to a mine that operates with foreign capital causes a group of municipal police officers to carry out brutal actions. Three years later, Emiliano (Juan Daniel García) – the son of a missing woman who led the complaints against the mine – ends up with a key clue that could bring about the resolution that he and his sister have sought so much. Although there’s an eventual passage in the film...

Cannes frequently gets criticized for the paucity of Latin American representation in the main competition, so it was widely assumed that the new feature from festival veteran Amat Escalante, the 2013 best director winner for Heli, would be guaranteed a spot. Sad to report that watching Lost in the Night (Perdidos en la noche), it’s easy to see why it was shuffled off to a sidebar. The Mexican filmmaker moves out from the shadow of his former mentor, Carlos Reygadas, with his most accessible work to date in this revenge thriller, which is engrossing enough but also a bit meandering and underpowered.
Escalante’s fifth feature takes its cues more from his experience in television on Narcos: Mexico than from his previous big-screen work, which could in theory bring him to a wider audience. But it lacks the tight cohesion of that series at its best, and softens the jarring intensity,...

Amat Escalante’s title debuted in the Cannes Premiere section.
Mexican auteur Amat Escalante’s Lost In The Night is to be released in the UK and Ireland by Sovereign, following its debut in the Cannes Premiere section.
Sovereign is aiming for a late 2023, early 2024 theatrical release, with The Match Factory handling international sales.
The social thriller tells the story of a Mexican activist who disappears without a trace following her protests against the local mining industry. Five years later, her son attempts to find the culprit.
It was written by Escalante in collaboration with his brother Martín Escalante and Paulina Mendoza.

When Rigoberto Duplas, the worrying conceptual artist and antagonist of Amat Escalante’s new film, tells Emiliano, our steadfast lead, that the cheap glass in his modernist mansion has a tendency to “rattle,” it sounds like a dig. Luckily, it’s a tendency our hero doesn’t share. Played with furrowed seriousness by Juan Daniel García (a standout in the recent Robe of Gems), Emiliano is the most convincing part of Escalante’s muddled mystery: a film about a young man on a mission to avenge his mother who disappeared after protesting the sale of a local mine.
After breaking out in Un Certain Regard with Blood in 2005, Escalante’s ascension on the festival circuit has been nothing if not steady: awarded best director for Heli by Steven Spielberg’s jury in 2013, the director followed that success with a Silver Lion in Venice for The Untamed in 2016. Match #1: Double Jeopardy Match – Claudio Castagnoli def. Rey Fenix The following is courtesy of allelitewrestling.com:
The winner earns a shot at the other man’s championship. Claudio ducked a reverse kick from Rey Fenix. Claudio caught a flying Rey Fenix and nailed him with a vicious backbreaker. But then Claudio got bounced around with two tope suicidas from Rey Fenix. The third time was not the charm, though, as Claudio caught Rey and then dropped him across the barricade outside the ring. Rey Fenix walked the top of the barricade and clobbered Claudio with a hurracanrana onto the floor. Bryan Danielson and Wheeler Yuta watched the match on a monitor backstage.

One of the most anticipated recent additions to the Cannes Film Festival lineup hails from Mexican director Amat Escalante, who returns to the festival after winning Best Director for Heli and whose last feature was 2016’s genre-defying thriller The Untamed, for which he won Best Director at Venice. Lost in the Night, starring Juan Daniel Garcia, Barbara Mori, Ester Exposito, Fernando Bonilla, and Maria Fernanda Osio, will debut in the Cannes Premiere section of the festival and we’re pleased to debut new images from the film, which clocks in at 113 minutes.

Match #1: TNT Championship – Powerhouse Hobbs def. Rey Fenix
My Thoughts: The very definition of a David vs. Goliath wrestling match, this turned out to be a superb battle between two men who had totally different styles and were totally different sizes. Given the squash matches Hobss has had recently, you’d have expected less of a battle for him against the smaller Fenix but this match was booked brilliantly so that just when you thought that was the case, it wasn’t! I was also pleasantly surprised we didn’t get shenanigans from Qtv either!
My Score: 3.5 out of 5 Match #2: Taya Valkyrie def. Ava Lawless

The world is in for a treat when All Elite Wrestling sends the signal from Canada Life Center in Winnipeg on Wednesday, March 15.
Aew Dynamite and Aew Rampage will air from Winnipeg on Wednesday and Friday, respectively, marking only the second time that professional wrestling’s newest major player makes the trek north. Jericho is often considered among the greatest professional wrestlers in history and certainly one of the best to ever represent Canada.
In 2018, Jericho left WWE for a dream match against fellow Winnipeg native Kenny Omega. The match was brokered by another Winnipeg professional wrestling personality, Don Callis, and it headlined New Japan Pro Wrestling’s (Njpw) famed Wrestle Kingdom card at the Tokyo Dome. Jericho says it’s fitting for Aew to debut in Winnipeg due to the influence that match had on the eventual formation of Aew.

We had another Aew pay-per-view this past weekend, so you know what that means… A bonus Saturday episode of Aew: Dark which thankfully only features a handful of matches rather than the growing number of the regular Dark features! Anyway, on with the review…
Match #1: The Acclaimed def. The Workhorsemen
My Thoughts: A great start to this special extra episode of Dark, with one of my favourite tag teams taking on one of Aew’s most popular tag teams in a match that ended up being a exciting back and forth that thankfully didn’t have The Workhorsemen just lying down and eating the pin.

Hummingbirds, the documentary feature debut of directors Silvia Del Carmen Castaños and Estefanía “Beba” Contreras, has won the Crystal Bear, the top prize for best film, at the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival’s Generation 14plus section.
In the doc, the two filmmakers examine issue of immigration along the Texas-Mexican border through the lens of their own friendship. The Generation international jury called the film “a touching and subtle glimpse into the intimate moments of memorable characters…their self-determination and playfulness, as both protagonists and authors, is inspiring. Their actions, jokes, songs, laughs, and bodies are political and necessary as a way of resistance.”
A special mention in the Generation 14plus section went to Vuk Lungulov-Klotz’s Mutt, a drama set over the course of a single hectic day in New York City, and centered on a trans man ( Lio Mehiel) who finds his life shaken up by the reemergence of...

Match #1: Emi Sakura, Marina Shafir and Nyla Rose def. Johnnie Robbie, Vipress and Zyra
My Thoughts: This match saw a return to the Shafir/Rose/Vickie squabbles that we’ve seen previously – they’re obviously building to the split between the trio but at the same time I’ve enjoyed the teaming of Nyla Rose’s intensity with Vickie Guerrero’s brash attitude and I’ll miss it when the split does happen. As for this match? It felt more like an angle than a match but still, an Aew quasi-squash is still an Aew quasi-squash!

My Thoughts: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the new additions to The Factory faction have given the group a huge boost. Case in point, this match. Johnson and Karter work well as a duo and even made Qt Marshall a new edge!
My Score: 2.5 out of 5 Match #2: Zack Clayton def. Chris Wylde

My Thoughts: Clayton is seemingly being booked like a lot of the lower-tier Aew talent, he loses to any “big name” talent but then wins against outside enhancement talent. Which is, honestly, kind of boring. Even more so when it’s someone like Clayton, who needs an extra...

Welcome back to another review of Aew Dark: Elevation, this week features nine matches once again and a number of big-name stars rather than jobbers! We’ve got Ian Riccaboni, Paul Wight and Matt Menard on commentary, so let’s get into the review…
Match #1: The Butcher, The Blade and Rush def. Doug Love, Channing Thomas and Brett Gosselin
My Thoughts: This was a squash match but a good squash match – you want to see guys like The Butcher, The Blade and Rush demolish their opponents and that’s what we got here.
My Score: 1 out of 5 Match #2: Willow Nightingale and Hikaru Shida def. Leva Bates and Emi Sakura
My Thoughts: Willow Nightingale teams with another Japanese talent and it looks and feels just as “right” as her tag team with Riho last week. Good to Leva Bates in action too. Nice women’s tag match – something that...

Another week, another episode of Aew: Dark which features 8 matches on the card this week (thankfully; I do love a shorter show)… On with the review!
Match #1: Sky Blue def. Paris Van Dale
My Thoughts: Paris Van Dale is back again to get squashed by a signed Aew talent! I jest but Van Dale at least got more of a chance to show off her skills in this match than against Tay Melo. Sky Blue once again delivered a solid performance and the growth in her skills is very apparent every time she wrestles. As is the case here. A solid start to the show.
My Score: 2 out of 5 Match #2: The Iron Savages def. Brando Lee & Lucas Chase
My Thoughts: I still can’t get behind the change to The Iron Savages… Give me Bear Country any day. It’s a shame the duo haven’t hit the highs they had before injury,...

Match #1: Gates of Agony (Toa Liona and Bishop Kaun) def. Big Cuzzo and Teddy Goodz
My Thoughts: I’ve been a fan of Toa Liona and Kaun since they first debuted on Aew programming and its great to see them now a staple of the brand. However, they deserve better than this squash match Imho.
My Score: 1 out of 5 Match #2: Tay Melo def. Paris Van Dale
My Thoughts: Another Tay Melo match and another squash match – I guess that’s because she kicks the faces in on more experienced opponents.
My Score: 1 out of 5 Match #3: Matt Hardy and Private Party (Isiah Kassidy and Marq Quen) def. Kyle Bradley,...

Mexican filmmaker Sofía Auza revisits her 2019 short in debut feature “Adolfo,” produced by The Immigrant, and about to be introduced to buyers at MipCancun.
Starring Juan Daniel García Treviño – also spotted in Netflix’s “I’m No Longer Here” – and Rocío de la Mañana, it sees two strangers meeting at a bus stop on the worst, or maybe the best night of their lives.
Hugo is on the way to his father’s funeral, Momo just got out of rehab. Together, they set out on a surprising adventure, with one goal in mind: fFinding a new home for a cactus named Adolfo.
“Adolfo is the most important part of the story!’,” Auza tells Variety.
“It’s the one thing Hugo has left from his dad. It’s not a flower, it’s not exactly beautiful. He describes it as the ugliest plant in the world, but he’s not ready to let go of it.

Now let’s get to the review…
Match #1: All-Atlantic Championship Match – Orange Cassidy def. Katsuyori Shibata The following is courtesy of allelitewrestling.com:
Orange Cassidy was accompanied by the Best Friends and Danhausen. Shibata grabbed a headlock on Cassidy while Cassidy had his hands in his pockets. Cassidy ducked a kick from Shibata. Cassidy took flight with a tope suicida on Shibata! Shibata whipped Orange into the steel guardrails. Shibata and Orange traded forearms outside the ring. Orange Cassidy landed a diving Ddt and then a running dropkick to Shibata in the corner! Shibata rallied back,...

Welcome to this week’s review of Aew: Dynamite, which was broadcast live from the Chartway Center in Norfolk, Virginia. We’ve got Excalibur, Tony Schiavone and Taz on commentary so let’s get into the review!
Match #1: Claudio Castagnoli & Wheeler Yuta def. Chris Jericho & Daniel Garcia The following is courtesy of allelitewrestling.com:
Jericho flipped off Claudio and Claudio answered with European Uppercuts! Garcia ran in and Claudio stopped him with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. Yuta tagged in and he and Claudio clocked Garcia with a double boot to the face. Garcia headbutted Yuta, a tactic he used to slow down Yuta’s offense. Hager and Menard pulled Jericho and Garcia out of the ring, trying to give their teammates a breather. But Claudio and Yuta wasted no time to bring the fight back to Jericho and Garcia to keep the momentum on track. Hager distracted Claudio, which allowed...
