Five-part ABC iview comedy All My Friends Are Racist, written and created by Enoch Mailangi, has kicked off production in Brisbane, with co-executive producer Leah Purcell to star.
Joining Purcell are Davey Thompson and Tuuli Narkle, who will play the lead characters: two young, affluent Aboriginal flatmates – gay social media influencer Casey and budding lawyer, Belle.
The duo are socially outcast after their online ‘burn book’, listing their racist friends, is discovered, and are then faced with a difficult decision as to who and what they are willing to lose.
Purcell will play high court judge and Casey’s mother, Justine Janelle Ray Ao.
Mailangi’s pitch for the series saw them win 2017’s Raw initiative, a First Nations writers workshop conceived by Artology with the support of Purcell, Wayne Blair and Kyas Hepworth.
Directing the project is Bjorn Stewart, with Kodie Bedford having penned the scripts with Mailangi and co-producing.

“So much in the world has changed since our inaugural Birrarangga Film Festival two years ago, including the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, #MeToo and the ongoing global pandemic,” he says.

Terry Norris and Benedict Hardie in ‘Judy & Punch.’
After portraying a succession of dastardly or less than noble characters in films and TV series, Benedict Hardie welcomed the chance to play someone with at least a few redeeming qualities in Judy & Punch.
In Mirrah Foulkes’ brutal, dark re-interpretation of the puppet play which opens in Australian cinemas on Thursday via Madman Entertainment, he plays Constable Derrick.
The lone cop in the wryly-named inland town of Seaside, Derrick struggles to maintain law and order as Damon Herriman’s narcissistic Punch causes mayhem after his much-abused wife Judy (Mia Wasikowska) vanishes.

Leah Purcell and Bain Stewart.
This year is shaping as the most memorable and action-packed in the 20-year-career of Indigenous writer-director-producer-actor Leah Purcell.
After focussing on acting for the past few years she has signed on as the start-up director of My Life is Murder, the 10-part mystery-drama starring Lucy Lawless, commissioned by Network 10.
That assignment will help her prepare for her biggest project: directing, co-producing, writing and starring in The Drover’s Wife: The Legend of Molly Johnson, the feature film adaptation of her play ‘The Drover’s Wife’ in September.
Later this year she will return to the TV screens as Rita Connors in season seven of Foxtel/Fremantle’s Wentworth and she will embark on season eight after the movie wraps.
Penguin Random House has commissioned her to write a novel based on the play, which will be published in mid-2019, and the producers are also developing a TV series spin-off.
