HONG KONG -- The Hong Kong Directors' Guild has received a HK$15 million (US$1.9 million) boost from newly established See Corporation Ltd for 10 high-definition movies, with the first film going into production after the new year. "We are looking at scripts at the moment. We have to find films with really good potential," said Guild representative Gordon Chan (The Medallion) who will oversee production. "This is a good shot in the arm for us because it will allow us to make lower budget movies. At the moment, these have died out because everyone is only concentrating on the high budget blockbusters." Although these movies are essentially aimed at the television market, See Corporation chief executive officer Carl Chang said they did not rule out theatrical releases.

HONG KONG -- Production has started on Emperor Multimedia Group's sequel to its summer action hit Twins Effect. Twins Effect 2, starring Charlene Tsoi and Gillian Chung, who form the highly popular pop duo Twins, will mark the first EMG film to roll into production since Albert Lee took over the helm of EMG from Carl Chang in May. Despite the name, Twins Effect 2 will not strictly be a sequel to Twins Effect, which grossed $3.7 million. While the first installment -- directed by Dante Lam and Donnie Yen -- was about two young vampire hunters, the sequel will be a period martial arts piece with Choi and Chung as two warriors from an all-female country out to conquer men.

HONG KONG -- Albert Lee has exited as the director of the recently postponed Hong Kong Film Financing Forum 2003 (HAF) to become head of production company Emperor Multimedia Group. Lee replaces CEO Carl Chang, who is leaving EMG at the end of June to concentrate on his own production company, Virus Prods. As part of a transition period, Lee and Chang will work together until the latter's departure. "We already have about six to seven productions in development, some of which we will be producing for EMG," said Chang about his own company. EMG is currently readying big-budget action films that include "The Medallion", starring Jackie Chan, and "The Twins Effect".
