According to her NY Times obituary, she and husband Waldo Peirce (sometimes called "The American Renoir") lived in France in the 1920s where they were intimates of the expatriates F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein and Ernest Hemingway. They are reputed to be characters in Hemingway's _The Sun Also Rises_.
