Daniel Mays remembers Michael Douglas and Timothy Van Patten, the respectively star and director of new Apple TV drama Franklin, bursting into song whenever he appeared on set.
It came about because during the Franklin shoot in Paris, director Nicholas Hytner asked Mays to star at London’s Bridge Theatre as good old reliable Nathan Detroit in an immersive production of the classic Broadway fable Guys & Dolls by Frank Loesser, Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling.
Upon hearing this news, Douglas insisted, ”You’re doing it, Danny — no question about it.”
The adaption of Damon Runyon’s tales was Van Patten’s father’s favorite musical, “so then within the hour, more like a whole bloody second, every time I came on set, they kept playing ‘The Oldest Established [Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York], and Michael and Noah Jupe would join in.”
Even the French crew got in the swing of it.

Opening in theaters and on VOD July 14, Vertical’s “The Modelizer” offers a trailer that sells a romantic comedy that’s part of a new wave of “Hong Kong Films,” which are original features where the subject matter is distinctly Hong Kong but is in English.
Directed by Keoni Waxman and produced, written by and starring Byron Mann (who has seemingly aged about ten minutes since playing Ryu in the 1994 “Street Fighter” movie), the picture is a conventional mix of rom-com tropes (a well-off womanizer must change his ways once he finds someone – played by Rayssa Bratillieri — worth settling down for) and wealth porn, with the obvious hook being that it’s from a locale that isn’t often presented in such a fashion in mainstream Hollywood flicks.
The locale is usually for stranger-in-a-strange-land actioners like Dwayne Johnson’s “Skyscraper” (who co-starred Mann) and Rowann Atkinson’s “Johnny English Reborn...

Comedy is what we need right now, says Nicholas Hytner, who ran London’s National Theatre for a decade.
It’s fine to have heavy-lifting dramas by Ibsen or Schiller, but boy-oh-boy laughter is an increasingly uplifting necessity.
Which is where Guys & Dolls and James Corden, post his life on The Late Late Show, come in.
Hytner, partnered with longtime executive Nick Starr, now own and control London’s Bridge Theatre and is overseeing a fully immersive revival of the classic Broadway musical Guys & Dolls, choreographed by Dame Arlene Phillips (Strictly Come Dancing) and now in early previews.
It stars Daniel Mays as Nathan Detroit, Andrew Richardson (A Call to Spy) as Sky Masterson, Celinde Schoenmaker (Rocketman) as Sarah Brown and Marisha Wallace (Aladdin) as long-suffering Miss Adelaide. Cedric Neal plays Nicely-Nicely Johnson. Also in the cast are Jordan Castle,...

Elton John’s ex-wife, Renate Blauel, is seeking an estimated £3M ($3.8M) in damages over claims the singer broke the terms of their divorce agreement.
Blauel, who was married to the star for four years in the 1980s, is suing over sections of John’s 2019 memoir Me, and hit movie biopic Rocketman.
Blauel claims these revealed details of the marriage, breaking an agreement they made when they divorced in 1988, and that her mental health was impacted by the disclosures.
The legal dispute first emerged last month, when Blauel filed for an injunction at London’s High Court. Further details have emerged after John’s team filed a response this week.
According to the BBC, Blauel claimed not to have been consulted about her appearance in Rocketman, in which she was played by Celinde Schoenmaker. She also said that, following the release of the movie and the memoir, a journalist had...

Rocketman, directed by Dexter Fletcher, stars Taron Edgerton as Rock and Roll legend Elton John; and it’s safe to say Fletcher’s film has had a rather strange path to cinema screens.
A long history of development hell in casting the lead role, notably having Tom Hardy in the headlights for some time, eventually leading him to drop out and Edgerton to take over. Director Dexter Fletcher has also had a strange run-up to the finalisation of Rocketman. After being pulled into directing duties and overseeing the edit of the incredibly poor and unattractive Freddie Mercury Queen biopic, in part of the original and notorious director Bryan Singer...

In the new semibiographical musical Rocketman, Elton John's early romances play a significant role in the story. Although he's pretty much a camp icon and one of the most famous out gay men in pop culture, it wasn't always that way. Rocketman actually depicts John marrying a woman - and it's not something made up for the movie.
In 1984, John married Renate Blauel, a sound engineer who had been his dear friend for years. At this point in his life, John was publicly identifying as bisexual, which is what he identified himself as in a famous 1976 interview with Rolling Stone.
"I'm just going through a stage where any sign of affection would be welcome on a sexual level. I'd rather fall in love with a woman eventually because I think a woman probably lasts much longer than a man. But I really don't know," he mused. "There's nothing wrong...

Another rock biography with an Oscar-caliber performance so soon after Bohemian Rhapsody? Critics have been more welcoming to Rocketman, starring an electrifying Taron Egerton as the young, addicted, conflicted, gay and gifted Elton John, than they were to the story of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, which had to settle for becoming the highest-grossing music biopic of all time ($900 million). The PG-13 Rhapsody took heat for sanitizing Mercury’s sex, drugs and rock & roll lifestyle and for being, in the words of Bill Maher, “not gay enough.” Rest assured that there’s plenty of sex,...
