‘Bless up for the Ted Heads!’: Emmy nominee Alex Szabo celebrates ‘Ted Lasso’ fans at Emmy FYC event
There was nothing but love for “Ted Lasso” during the joint Apple TV+/Gold Derby FYC event held August 16 at the American Society of Cinematographers Clubhouse in Hollywood. In celebration of the comedy’s 21 Emmy nominations, top artisans from the program joined TV academy voters for a festive night with dinner, drinks and trivia. Editor Alex Szabo, who is nominated with A.J. Catoline for his work on the episode “Mom City,” sat down with Gold Derby associate editor Latasha Ford to spread that love back to fans. Watch the video interview above.
“Bless up for the Ted Heads!” he exclaims at the top of the interview. “Without them we wouldn’t be here. I remember season one, I was like, ‘I just hope people watch it.’ And here we are a few years later and everyone’s like, ‘We need more! We need more!’ I appreciate it. I don’t take it for granted.

There wasn’t a dry eye in the house among the full cast and crew on the last day of filming Ted Lasso‘s season three. The shot was in the fictional Richmond Fc locker room before its championship game against rival West Ham — and before beloved coach Ted Lasso, played by Jason Sudeikis (who’s nominated for lead actor and writing in addition to comedy series), was scheduled to return to the U.S. Instead of his usual pep talk, Lasso introduces a video, looking back at the team’s growth. “The tears are real,” says Declan Lowney, who directed this episode and eight others during the three seasons of the 11-time Emmy-winning Apple TV+ series. (Its 10 noms this year include nods to most of the talent mentioned in this story.) Famously based on a 2013 NBC Sports promo, Sudeikis’ depiction of an American college football coach who moves to...

Emmy voters in attendance had a blast answering questions at “Ted Lasso Trivia Night” as they dined on short ribs, salmon, potatoes and fresh veggies and imbibed the “Ted Lasso”-inspired Pimm’s Cup alcoholic drinks. For dessert? Chocolate-covered strawberries and yummy cheesecake. The party-goers also re-watched the Season 3 finale, titled “So Long, Farewell.”
Current and former “Ted Lasso” Emmy nominees who rubbed elbows with TV academy members were: director Declan Lowney, editor A.J. Catoline, additional editor Alex Szabo, additional editor Francesca Castro, music editor Richard David Brown, supervising sound editor Brent Findley, and re-recording mixer Ryan Kennedy.

Cathy Repola, national executive director of the Editors Guild, IATSE Local 700, has been reappointed to the board of directors of the Motion Picture Industry Pension & Health Plans, which cover members of IATSE and several other below-the-line unions.
Her reappointment comes after a very public falling out with IATSE President Matt Loeb back in 2018, when he unceremoniously booted off the P&h Plans’ board after she was the only IATSE local leader to oppose the ratification of the union’s film and TV contract.
Two weeks after her return to the board on June 16, David Asplaud, the P&h Plans’ chief executive officer, sent IATSE local business agents a letter informing them that the Plans would be easing the requirements that their members need to qualify for health coverage in order “to help participants and dependents affected by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.” Read that letter here.

Catoline, the editors of the Apple TV+ series, confirmed the season three will see everyone going through some major changes—including the team. AFC Richmond owner Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) and coach Nate (Nick Mohammed) will be among the characters with the biggest arcs in the upcoming season three of Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso, says its Emmy-nominated editors Aj Catoline and Melissa McCoy. In a new episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Behind the Screen, the pair detail their work in season two — what they say creator Jason Sudeikis calls the Empire Strikes Back season — and look ahead to the continuation of the series.
This includes the evolution of the characters. “[Nate’s] on a trajectory, career wise. … From season one as kitman, then he became a coach and now he’s the coach of West Ham,” Cateline says, adding, “Jason is so very generous as a producer and creator. He gives all of the characters a storyline. I think that’s why [the episodes] are so full … There so...

Ted Lasso‘s stars have once again played a blinder at the Emmy nominations — to borrow a phrase from AFC Richmond’s home city of London. This time the love has been shared around even further.

“When I saw Toheeb, Sarah, James and Harriet had been nominated I genuinely burst into tears,” said Waddingham, who plays Rebecca Welton, AFC Richmond owner, and is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series. “For us to be all drawn up like this is magical.”

“Belfast,” “Dune,” “King Richard,” “No Time to Die” and “The Power of the Dog” have been nominated as the best dramatic film editing of 2021 by the American Cinema Editors, which announced the nominees for the 72nd annual Ace Eddie Awards on Thursday.
Those five films will compete in the Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) category, while the field in Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy) will consist of “Cruella,” “Don’t Look Up,” “The French Dispatch,” “Licorice Pizza” and “tick, tick…Boom!”
The most surprising omission was probably “West Side Story,” while Ace Eddie voters also bypassed “Nightmare Alley,” “Coda” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”
Nominations for the editing of animated features went to the same five animated films that have also been nominated by the Cinema Audio Society, Motion Picture Sound Editors, Visual Effects Society and Art Directors Guild: “Encanto,” “Luca,” “The Mitchells vs. the Machines,” “Raya and the Last Dragon” and “Sing 2.

As IATSE members prepare to vote this weekend on a proposed new film and TV contract, membership discontent is evident not only on social media but also is a playing out in the Editors Guild’s upcoming board elections. In their campaign statements, none of the guild’s 23 board candidates openly opposes the tentative agreement, but none flat out endorse it either.
Three years ago, the Editors Guild, IATSE Local 700, was the only local that voted against ratification of the 2018 contract – and by a huge majority. This time, however, the guild’s leadership is urging their members to ratify it, as are the leaders of IATSE and all the other 45 affected locals across the country.
“This last round of negotiations, we got most of what we wanted,” incumbent Maysie Hoy wrote in her candidate’s statement. “We can and we should do better. Looking toward the future, we must raise...

Contract talks between the studios and the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees were still underway late Wednesday and are expected to continue on Thursday.
As is typically the case during collective bargaining, the negotiators were abiding by a media blackout. The blackout and the fact that talks are going into a third consecutive day could be read as an encouraging sign that the sides believe that a deal can be reached.
The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers presented a revised proposal on Tuesday, and the union side was said to be huddling and coming up with its counteroffer. The talks involve 13 local unions representing 47,000 members — including cinematographers, editors, set dressers, prop makers, costumers, grips, and so on — and the process of including their perspectives can be time consuming. One local told members that the situation was “fluid,” and that there was nothing solid to report.

One summer ago, when the nation was fatigued from endless new cycles and in the thick of a deadly pandemic, a little comedy called “Ted Lasso” dropped on the AppleTV+ platform with a fairly normal debut series trajectory. And then the deafening buzz began when comfort-seekers latched onto mustachioed soccer coach Ted (Jason Sudeikis) and his unfazed, majestically optimistic outlook on life and work, even carving a portion of his day to impose whimsical wisdoms to his scrappy English team and also make delicious biscuits to win over his furtive new employer, Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham).
The enveloping lovefest proves to be just as true off the set as anything you’re likely to see onscreen. “What I love about this show is that it’s about the relationships that come from sports, it’s not really about the game, it’s about what they’re going through”, says editor Melissa McCoy.

“It’s really finding the perfect pitch of comedy and feeling,” says Melissa McCoy about the challenges in editing “Ted Lasso.” Her fellow editor on the series, A.J. There’s so much more to Ted, we need to take time with the moments.” Watch our exclusive video interview above with the two editors.

Washington — Omarosa Manigault Newman claims in her upcoming book that President Donald Trump is a “racist.” She cites three unnamed sources who say that he has been caught on mic on the set of “The Apprentice” using the “N-word,” but the White House quickly pushed back on her tome and the publicity surrounding it.
“Instead of telling the truth about all the good President Trump and his administration are doing to make America safe and prosperous, this book is riddled with lies and false accusations,” said White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. “It’s sad that a disgruntled former White House employee is trying to profit off these false attacks, and even worse that the media would now give her a platform, after not taking her seriously when she had only positive things to say about the President during her time in the administration.”
