Juanita Wilson's As If I'm Not There is hardly a bad film - there's a lot in it that's courageous, unsettling and frequently horrifying - but perhaps the clearest indication of how far it falls short of being something great is that, despite all the terrible things that happen to the heroine, you can't stop thinking of everything the director's doing wrong. As If... is adapted from a novel by Croatian journalist Slavena Drakulic about the ethnic cleansing that went on during the conflict in the Balkans, and there are times when it's as savagely raw as the material demands. For some reason, though, Wilson seems unable to resist pitching the story as some kind of chocolate-box melodrama, with swelling, manipulative strings and big emotional...

The 35th Toronto International Film Festival is upon us once again. The browning of leaves and shortening of evenings heralds the start of the annual event which this year takes place between Thursday, September 9th and Friday the 19th. In the run up to the 2010 festival we spoke with the Irish filmmakers behind the five projects chosen to screen at the event including 'As If I'm Not There's' director Juanita Wilson; 'Sensation's producer Katie Holly; 'Essential Killing's producer Andrew Lowe; 'Lapland Odyssey's producer Dominic Wright and 'The Pipe's director Risteard O'Domhnaill. Following on from last year's success there will be a strong Irish presence at Toronto again this year. Last year saw seven projects from Irish filmmakers screening at the event and this year Ireland will be represented by five features.

Wow, that's a lot of flicks. Everything from Peter Mullan's Neds to Benedek Fliegauf's Womb (that's right, it's a trailer!) to more Greek weirdness in Athena Tsangari's Attenberg. I wish I was going.
It's late so I'm not writing much of a post here.. Maybe I'll update tomorrow.

Rachel Weisz in The Whistleblower The Toronto International Film Festival has added even more films to their line-up today as the complete line-up was announced, which ended up causing the festival's server to crash, but I was lucky enough to get in and get out before missing out on the information.
First off, the festival's Mavericks line-up is quite interesting, which includes a series of guest presentations and this year will see Edward Norton interview Bruce Springsteen, NBA All-Star and native Canadian Steve Nash will present his hour-long film Into the Wind, Apichatpong Weerasethakul will talk with the audience as his Cannes Palm d'Or-winning film Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall his Past Lives was just added to the Masters programme, Ken Loach and Paul Laverty will be interviewed by Michael Moore on politics and cinema and Philip Seymour Hoffman will have his own panel. Also on hand will be Bill Gates,...

From evil Santas to Australian killers, the Discovery program brings the best of the coming generation of film talent to Toronto. Making the grade this year are:
As If I Am Not There Juanita Wilson, Ireland/Macedonia/Sweden World Premiere
As If I Am Not There explores one woman's experience of the horrors that took place at the beginning of the Bosnian War. Disturbing and powerful, the film is an important testament to the survivors of the atrocities in the former Yugoslavia.
Attenberg Athina Rachel Tsangiri, Greece North American Premiere
A dying architect and his emotionally stunted daughter inhabit a once booming industrial community in the middle of nowhere, now populated by the precious few who didn't have the heart to leave it behind.
Autumn Aamir Bashir, India World Premiere
Shot in striking, widescreen images in India's Kashmir region, Bashir's debut tells the story of Rafiq, a young man struggling...

Comprised of mostly first timers and unknowns that need the spotlight focus, this year's discovery section offers some titles that have been on my radar for a while now. Deemed as a showcase for innovative new filmmakers, some noticeable inclusions begin with a Greek film hitting the Venice Film Festival that we've profiled (see pic) on more than one occasion (Attenberg), and the world premieres for: Shawn Ku's Beautiful Boy and an opposite sounding title in Abe Sylvia's Dirty Girl (we just featured some pics), we have Max Winkler's directorial debut Ceremony - featuring Uma Thurman, and a Filmmaker Magazine 25 New Faces mentioned Arielle Javitch and her debut film, Look, Stranger. The movie's star Jeremy Renner is up for the Best Actor in a Leading Role Oscar, competing against George Clooney ("Up in the Air"), Morgan Freeman ("Invictus"), Jeff Bridges ("Crazy Heart") and Colin Firth ("A Single Man").
In the Best Director category, Bigelow will fight it out with her ex-husband James Cameron, who is praised for his sci-fi epic "Avatar", along with Quentin Tarantino ("Inglourious Basterds"), Lee Daniels ("Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire") and Jason Reitman ("Up in the Air").
"The Hurt Locker" is also in the running for Best Picture - the film is among 10 nominees for the prestigious accolade, including "Avatar", "Up in the Air", "The Blind Side" and "Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire".

As expected, the Oscar nominations were virtually surprise-free as they were announced this morning by Academy President Tom Sherak and Oscar-nominated actress Anne Hathaway. If you count "The Blind Side's" nomination for Best Picture as a surprise, that's the most gripping moment during the announcement (you could hear the audience clap with excitement when the film was announced).
But I'm more ecstatic with the inclusion of "District 9" for Best Picture, and sadden with the snub of "(500) Days of Summer."
"Avatar" and "The Hurt Locker" led the pack with 9 nominations each. James Cameron's sci-fi flick scored noms including Best Picture, Director, Art Direction, Cinematography, Film Editing, Music (Original Score), Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Visual Effects. Although the biggest blockbuster in the world failed to get a Best Original Screenplay nomination.

CANNES -- Focus Features co-topper David Linde on Saturday unveiled two new Working Title projects that the Universal specialty arm will distribute, including the current U.K. hit Shaun of the Dead and an untitled film by East Is East helmer Damien O'Donnell. The news came when Linde addressed a roomful of international distributors at Focus' annual Carlton Hotel luncheon. Both features were developed through Working Title's low-budgeted production arm WT2. Shaun will unspool in North America through Focus' newly launched Rogue Pictures label. The film -- directed by Edgar Wright and penned by Wright and Simon Pegg -- is a romantic zombie comedy that follows the adventures of underachievers Shaun and Ed as they cope with a zombie invasion of London and try to save Shaun's girlfriend. O'Donnell's untitled drama -- which will go out through Focus domestically -- follows two physically challenged young men who seize an opportunity to live life on their own terms. The film stars James McAvoy (Wimbledon), Steven Robertson, Romola Garai and Brenda Fricker. The project was written by Jeffrey Caine from a story by Christian O'Reilly and produced by James Flynn and Juanita Wilson.
