Back in July of 2021, it was announced that V/H/S and Southbound filmmakers Roxanne Benjamin and David Bruckner were teaming up again for the survival thriller Fall Into Darkness, a remake of the 2014 Spanish-language film La Cueva. Benjamin would be directing the film, working from a screenplay Bruckner wrote with Nick Tecosky. Nell Tiger Free (Servant), Thomas Doherty (Legacies), and Lorenza Izzo (The Green Inferno) were all signed on to star. Filming was expected to begin at Lantica’s Pinewood Studios in the Dominican Republic in the fall of ’21. But Fall Into Darkness never went into production. And during a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Free theorized that it fell apart due to the pandemic.

Ulterior is created by Money Heist director Alex Rodrigo and Vida Perfecta’s Manuel Burque and follows a young singer and influencer who wakes up in a life that she does not recognize in a world where humans are given the opportunity to virtually connect to a simulation of their own lives. Beta Film has partnered with Morena Films and Disney + Spain, picking up international distribution rights to the young-adult mystery drama “The Invisible Girl,” based on the best-selling book trilogy of the same name by Blue Jeans, a leading figure in YA literature.

Further expanding its already robust talent roster in Spain, Latin America and the U.S. Latino market, Vis, Paramount’s international studio, has signed an exclusive first-look deal with Madrid and Los Angeles-based Morena Films to develop and produce films and series for the company’s portfolio.
The titles will have a strong focus on Latin America, Spain, and U.S. Hispanic markets, Vis and Morena announced Thursday. Morena Films, one of Spain’s biggest movie production forces, has closed Spanish distribution on “On the Fringe,” starring Penelope Cruz and Luis Tosar (“The Minions of Midas”).
The feature debut of actor-turned-director Juan Diego Botto, “On the Fringe” (“En las margenes”) will be released in Spain by Vértice Cine.
Scheduled to shoot in Madrid from October and sold by the U.K.’s Bankside Films, “On the Fringe” is produced by Morena’s Alvaro Longoria and Cruz and co-produced by André Logie at Belgium’s Panache Productions and by Spanish public broadcaster Rtve. Amazon Prime Video handles Spanish SVOD rights.
“On the Fringe” interweaves three stories, which unspool over 24 hours: of Rafael (Tosar), an activist lawyer; of Azucena (Cruz), a woman battling to save her son from a new wave of economic crisis, which has destroyed her life; and of Teodora, a grandmother wishing to say goodbye to her son.

The film, Sony's third local Spanish production after "Di Que Si" and "Melissa P.", will be directed by Alvaro Fernandez Armero, based on his screenplay co-written with Juan Cavestany. Sony Pictures Releasing International will release the film in Spain and handle worldwide distribution.
The €2.8 million ($3.6 million) film, which began shooting Oct. 30 in Madrid and Andalucia, will be produced by Morena's Pedro Uriol with Picasso's Belen Atienza and Columbia's senior vp of European productions Iona De Macedo overseeing production on behalf of their respective companies.
This is the fifth feature co-produced or co-financed by the European division of Columbia Tristar Motion Picture Group's local-language production arm.
The film tells the story of Jose Luis Perez, a referee in the extremely competitive Spanish professional soccer league whose reputation is in jeopardy as a result of a series of controversial decisions. Still in love with his ex-wife, he finds out she has a new lover and must now travel for the last and decisive match of the season with his best linesman and loyal friend, who has his own shameful secret.

CANNES -- Spanish production house Morena Films said Thursday that it has set up a new genre label, Trauma, specializing in "disturbing and unnerving films." The move comes one year after the Madrid-based company created Happy Hour films, targeting the teen/twentysomething audience with low-budget Spanish-language comedies.
