While the sword and sorcery genre dominated genre cinema in the first half of the eighties, thanks to the influence of Conan the Barbarian, one film predates this trend. That movie is – Hawk the Slayer! If you’re based in the UK, you might be saying to yourself, “oh man, Hawk the Slayer rules,” or maybe, “Hawk the Slayer sucks.” But, if you’re outside English, you’re probably thinking, Wtf is Hawk the Slayer?
This is a big-budget UK attempt at a blockbuster that arguably owes more to the influence of Star Wars (mainly its box office) than anything else. It was meant to start a blockbuster film saga, but underwhelming box office and withering reviews meant this was a one-off. The brainchild of writer-director Terry Marcel, the film stars John Terry (later famous as Jack’s dad on Lost and a one time Felix Leiter in The Living Daylights...

The BioWare Drop Zone Charity Auction starts today; it's their way of lending aide to the Edmonton Easter Seal’s Drop Zone fundraiser, in which participants dress up as super heroes and descend down the surface of a local, 28 story tall hotel to raise money for people with disabilities.
To that end, they're putting up various goods on eBay, collectables that should water the mouths of hardcore BioWare fans. Including opies of games, comics, and art books. Most are limited edition and all are autographed by the developers. Yet the most interesting prize of them all is the voice of Commander Shepard.
The chance to have Mark Meer, the voice of Shepard (the male version that is), provide a personalized voicemail greeting is up for dibs. According to the BioWare Blog:
"Imagine what your friends will think when they call you only to find out that you...

You may not know who Mark Meer is, but if you have ever played Mass Effect, you have spent multiple hours listening to his work. Meer is the voice of Commander Sheppard, as well a bunch of other galactic personalities and nasties that you meet while trying to stop the Reaper’s cull of all life. The barrier is seemingly moved up ever several months but at the time, Meer’s voice work on the original Mass Effect helped craft one of the best character performances that the gaming world had seen. Meer himself has an ineffable charm about him. When I first meet him in a pub, he is in a circle of many fans who are offering to buy him drinks, hang out with and showing him their fan work. Since I was at a convention, I assume this is an experience exclusive to large geek gatherings but...

The short, being directed by University of Advanced Technology grad Caleb Evans, goes 35 years into the series' past as humans have their first encounter with ruins from the ancient and mysterious Protheans--pushing humanity towards its next step on the evolutionary ladder.
Check out the synopsis and poster for this indie-made short after the jump.
I'm generally wary of fan films (or any kind of fan fiction, for that matter): why play around in someone else's sandbox when you're obviously talented enough to create something original of your own. Having said that, it looks like Evans and his crew have put together something really good looking with Red Sand and I'm curious about where it will go (and more importantly, what Evans will get up to next).

There's been some talk about the death of Comic-Con as an epicenter of the buzz economy. Major studios aren't spending the money and logistical capital to get directors, casts and that all-important shwag to San Diego this year. And, if you're a lifelong comics fan like me and my colleague Matt Singer, then there's some ambivalence at seeing the retreat of Hollywood powers-that-be who came to Comic-Con International to mine geek enthusiasm for their marketing efforts. On one hand, studios and stars showing up to court fanboys smells like nerd victory. But, when the flip side is a movie that underperforms or gets everything wrong about, say, Judge Dredd, all that wooing leaves a fanboy feeling cheap and used.
Nevertheless, if you want to capture the hearts of a hardcore nerd fanbase, Comic-Con's still the beating heart of disproportionately passionate pop culture enthusiasm. If you want to shore up the...

I've written in passing before about how camps of "Mass Effect" fans align themselves around the voice actors who perform as the male and female versions of lead character Commander Shepard. The masculine iteration of Shepard gets voiced by Mark Meer and the distaff version comes to life courtesy of Jennifer Hale. They're both veteran performers but it's been Meer's MaleShep who's been the face of the franchise, with his voice carrying every trailer and commercial that every been made for the series. FemShep fans have long argued that Hale's work surpasses Meer's when it comes to the line readings each gives Shepard. In fact, many gamers say that Hale's not only the better Shepard, but is one of the best actors working in games today. You can see for yourself in the videos below.
Thus, FemShep loyalists everywhere claimed victory when word that their girl would grace the cover...

BioWare's "Mass Effect" titles offer a stunning amount of scales and ambition in the experiences they offer to gamers. The two installments in the sci-fi action RPG series have been space opera of the highest order, and unique in the amount of personal investment it generates in the people who play. That investment starts with the Commander Shepard you make as your avatar. Shepard can be male or female and loyalist camps have sprung up around the actors-Mark Meer and Jennifer Hale, respectively-who give voice to the male and female versions of the character, called BroShep or FemShep by fans.
The investment continues in the agonizing storyline choices you make. Are you a hard-ass, take-no-prisoners Renegade, who lets enemies die even if you could save them? Do you let entire species become extinct? Or do you play as an altruistic Paragon, turning to diplomacy before force and pursuing justice instead of vengeance?...

Though it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, Mark Meer, voice actor for the male Commander Shepard in the Mass Effect series, has confirmed in an interview with RGPSite that he will be back in Mass Effect 3. BioWare has come right out and blatantly stated that it will be possible to kill off Shepard at the end of Mass Effect 2, but what about those that end the game with Shepard still breathing? Meer would surely have to stick around to record the lines for those of us that will do everything within our power to keep him alive.
I personally really liked Meer’s voice acting in Mass Effect. He really helped me connect with Shepard over the course of the game, and, as a result, I may or may not have choked back some real emotion after the final battle. I think the real question is: What...
