Cinema for Gaza, a group launched by a small group of female filmmakers and film journalists, has successfully raised more than $315,000 to support medical aid for the civilian population in Gaza.
A celebrity auction, organized by Cinema for Gaza, and supported by the likes of Tilda Swinton, Annie Lennox, Joaquin Phoenix, Spike Lee and Guillermo del Toro, raised some $316,778 (£254,297) for Medical Aid for Palestinians (Map), a U.K.-based charity that provides on-the-ground medical support, from sterile water to cancer drugs, for those on the Gaza Strip. The celebrities donated personal items — from signed film posters to personal Zoom chats to, in the case of Lennox, the handwritten lyrics to her Eurythmics hit “Sweet Dreams” — to be sold off to the highest bidder. (Lennox’s lyrics sheet was the top seller, with a bidder paying $26,222 for the piece of pop music history).

Glazer declined to comment.

“Zone of Interest” director Jonathan Glazer’s Oscars speech was a mistake, “Son of Saul” director László Nemes said. Though he praised Glazer’s film as “an important movie,” Nemes told The Guardian in a statement that Glazer “should have stayed silent.”
In Glazer’s speech, he said that he and producer James Wilson “stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people, whether the victims of October 7 in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza.”
Nemes explained in full, “‘The Zone of Interest’ is an important movie. It is not made in a usual way. It questions the grammar of cinema. Its director should have stayed silent instead of revealing he has no understanding of history and the forces undoing civilization, before or after the Holocaust.”

László Nemes, the director of acclaimed Holocaust film Son of Saul, has spoken out against the speech made by the The Zone of Interest director Jonathan Glazer, when he accepted his Oscar last weekend.
Glazer has ignited support but also a huge backlash with his speech, in which he said he and his producer James Wilson “stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people, whether the victims of October 7 in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza.”
Now Nemes, who won the foreign language award in 2015 for his film about the Holocaust, Son of Saul, writes in The Guardian newspaper:
“The Zone of Interest is an important movie… Its director should have stayed silent instead of revealing he has no understanding of history and the forces undoing civilisation, before or after the Holocaust.

The Zone of Interest executive producer and co-financier Danny Cohen has come out against director Jonathan Glazer’s 2024 Oscars acceptance speech, while defending the film itself as a “great piece of art.”
“It’s really important to recognize [the speech has] upset a lot of people and a lot of people feel upset and angry about it. And I understand that anger frankly,” Cohen, president of Access Entertainment, told the Unholy podcast on Thursday.
In his prepared speech accepting the 2024 Academy Award for best international film, Glazer thanked his partners on The Zone of Interest, a film set during the Holocaust, and then made a statement addressing both his work and the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

As Oscar night fades in the rearview, arguments over who got robbed and who had the nicest dress continue to recede. Kimmel’s monologue ended with a standing ovation as he brought Teamsters & IATSE members onto the stage, thanking them for standing with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA during last year’s strikes.

Oscars: ‘Oppenheimer’ Scores Seven Wins Including Best Picture, Actor, Supporting Actor and Director
Oppenheimer was the opposite of a bomb at the 2024 Oscars, winning seven Oscars over the course of the ceremony — including best picture, director, actor, supporting actor, original score, cinematography and film editing.
The Universal historical epic scored actors Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. their first Oscars for best actor and supporting actor, respectively, while Christopher Nolan won best director — also his first win following eight nominations.
Said Nolan while accepting his best director Oscar: “Movies are just a little bit over 100 years old. I mean, imagine being there 100 years into painting or theater. We don’t know where this incredible journey is going from here. But to know that you think that I’m a meaningful part of it means the world to me.”
Murphy immediately thanked longtime collaborator Nolan and his producer-wife Emma Thomas. “It’s been the wildest, most exhilarating, most creatively satisfying journey you’ve taken...

The Zone of Interest, the German-language Holocaust drama directed by Jonathan Glazer and starring Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller, has won the United Kingdom its first-ever Academy Award for best international feature at the Oscars 2024.
In his speech for his Cannes Grand Prix-winner, Glazer linked the film’s subject to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, where the October 7 Hamas terror attacks on Israel have led the Benjamin Netanyahu-led government to launch a ground invasion into Gaza that has now left over 30,0000 Palestinians dead.
“All our choices were made to reflect and confront us in the present,” Glazer told the audience, who had honored him with a standing ovation upon his win. “Our film shows where dehumanization leads at its worst.”

The Oscars are done for another year and Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy are newly minted Oscar winners for Oppenheimer! Overall, it was an expected and welcome result, with Oppenheimer also taking home Best Picture, while Poor Things star Emma Stone won a second Oscar, in a surprising, but well-earned result. Overall, it was the icing on the cake of a refreshingly entertaining edition of the Oscars – one of the best in years.
Right off the bat it was pretty amusing, Jimmy Kimmel made some pretty fun digs in his opening monologue, including some references to Robert Downey Jr’s checkered history (which he was happy to play along to) and Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s genetic perfection (he ain’t wrong). Forget what that Christmas song says! Here at TV Fanatic, we think award season is the most wonderful time of the year.
And in terms of both television ratings and general global interest, award shows don't get any bigger than the Academy Awards.
The stakes are higher than usual this year, as some major blockbuster films with some very devoted fan bases appear to be neck-and-neck in some of the major categories.
The race between Barbie and Oppenheimer (two quite different films that hit theaters on the same day) might be getting the most attention, but there's always a chance that a dark horse could sneak up from behind and snatch Best Picture away from both front runners.
Meanwhile, several of the acting categories are anyone's game and certain to create controversy no matter the outcome.
So without further ado, here are this year's predictions and hot takes from two...

When Jonathan Glazer began developing the project that became The Zone of Interest — nominated for five Oscars, including best picture and best international feature — he and producer James Wilson began to ask a series of questions that would require them to find the rationale behind making another film that depicts the events of the Holocaust.
The subject has been well-worn cinematic territory before and after Schindler’s List took best picture three decades ago — becoming the first film about the subject to win the Academy’s top prize. Both Glazer and Wilson knew that they had to do something completely different than what came before them, and Wilson tells THR the pair were less interested in depicting the extermination of European Jews than they were focused on grappling with the culture that contributed to those atrocities.

Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest” is a haunting look at humanity’s ability to turn a blind eye to atrocities after becoming desensitized. The Holocaust drama takes place in the shadows of Auschwitz, where Nazi guard Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel) and his wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller) live a calm domestic life raising their children next door to the infamous concentration camp. Glazer uses the cold and voyeuristic gaze that he perfected on “Under the Skin” to depict the banality of evil with chilling precision.
As the film heads into the final stretch of Oscar voting with five nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, Glazer and his team opened up about their creative process in a new featurette that IndieWire can exclusively reveal.
“I didn’t know about the Hoss family at all,” Hüller said of her first impressions of the role. “When I decided to be a part of it,...

For Margot Robbie and filmmaker Greta Gerwig, deciding on the final line of Barbie was a battle with some of their partners.
During the annual Producers Guild of America breakfast, Robbie was asked about any creative guardrails put in place by toy company Mattel over what Barbie could or could not say and do in the Warner Bros. feature. She started by recalling questions executives had over the script, including what it meant when Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu’s versions of Ken say they are going to “beach each other off.“
“’When they beach each other off, what does that mean?’ We were like, ‘What do you think that means?’” Robbie said to laughs from the crowd, before touching on the final line of the movie, “I’m here to see my gynecologist.”
Continued Robbie: “Or it could be something like ending the movie on the gynecologist line, which we were fighting for,...

Producers for nine of the 10 nominees for Outstanding Producer of a Motion Picture at the PGA Awards spoke at a breakfast panel about their films Saturday.
Emma Stone called herself the newest producer on a panel that included Oppenheimer producer Charles Roven, Past Lives producer Christine Vachon and The Holdovers producer Mark Johnson. Stone’s first producer credit was the 2018 Netflix series Maniac.
Producing Poor Things, in which she stars as a woman created from a reanimated body, Stone said what surprised her the most about producing was “how many agents you have to talk to. Whoa, it is very interesting to be on the other side of it now. It’s a lot. Agents are great, but whew.”

Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest,” only the fourth film in the 24-year feature career of the British director of “Sexy Beast,” “Birth” and “Under the Skin,” is in some ways the unlikeliest of this year’s 10 Best Picture nominees. A purposefully dispassionate chronicle of a subject — the Holocaust — unusually approached with enormous passion, it follows the daily life of a German family that lives in Poland during World War II.

The biggest night for British film proved to be a major one for Christopher Nolan. After reigniting the summer box office alongside Barbie, his atomic bomb biopic Oppenheimer led the way at the BAFTAs 2024, earning seven awards on the night – including the most hotly-contested categories. As well as Best Film, a Directing win for Nolan himself, and Acting awards for Cillian Murphy (Leading) and Robert Downey Jr. (Supporting), it bagged the likes of Best Score for Ludwig Goransson, Editing, and Cinematography for Hoyte Van Hoytema.
Nolan called it “an incredible honour” to be recognised on home turf in the UK. The ceremony took place at the Royal Festival Hall, “where my mum and dad used to drag me to make me get some culture,” he remembered. “Some of it stuck.” As well as thanking the “fearless and peerless” Cillian Murphy, and his producer – and wife – Emma Thomas (“I love you”) in his Director speech,...

The stars and artists behind the biggest films of 2023 descended on London this weekend for the BAFTA Film Awards. British film’s biggest night is often seen as the best predictor of Oscar momentum before the Academy Awards and the results often mirror each other.
If that’s the case this year, it will be all “Oppenheimer” all the time. Universal’s Christopher Nolan epic took home many of the night’s biggest categories, winning the top prize of Best Film along with Best Director for Nolan, Leading Actor for Cillian Murphy, and Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. The film also picked up major craft wins for Cinematography, Editing, and Original Score.
While the dominant showing makes an “Oppenheimer” Oscar sweep seem even more likely, Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” won for Costume Design, Makeup & Hair, Production Design, and Visual Effects, and star Emma Stone won Leading Actress for her...

“Poor Things” has performed well throughout this awards season, winning Best Comedy/Musical Film at the Golden Globes and snagging 11 Oscar nominations in total. That is the same number of awards the Searchlight Pictures movie was nominated for at the BAFTAs, where we predict it to perform well.
One person who is set to have a good night at the British film awards is Tony McNamara, who adapted Alasdair Gray‘s 1992 novel of the same name. McNamara previously worked with Emma Stone on “Cruella” and “The Favourite,” the latter of which was another Yorgos Lanthimos film. McNamara co-wrote that period piece with Deborah Davis. The duo was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars in 2019 but lost to “Green Book”.
However, they won the BAFTA for Best Adapted Screenplay, over “Cold War” (Janusz Głowacki and Paweł Pawlikowski), “Green Book,” “Roma” (Alfonso Cuarón), and “Vice” (Adam McKay). The film won six other BAFTAs in total,...

It’s an old canard in the movie business: Never underestimate a Holocaust movie when it comes to Oscar attention. From Hungary’s Best Foreign Language winner “Son of Saul” (2016) and Oscar-winners “Judgment at Nuremberg” (1961), “Cabaret” (1973), “Sophie’s Choice” (1983), and “The Pianist” (2004) to Steven Spielberg’s Best Picture winner “Schindler’s List” (1994), many Holocaust subjects, especially shorts and documentary features, have won Oscars. Documentaries like “Anne Frank Remembered” won for 1995, “The Long Way Home” for 1997, “The Last Days” for 1998, and “Into the Arms of Strangers: Stories of the Kindertransport” for 2000, and more recently, the nonfiction short “The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life” won for 2014 — just one week after its subject, Alice Herz-Sommer, the world’s oldest Holocaust survivor, passed away.

When looking at filming locations for “The Zone of Interest,” producer James Wilson was hoping that they might be able to use the Rudolf Höss house, which is still standing next to Auschwitz. The fact that it is now a private residence that’s been modernized canceled that idea but he would soon find the perfect place to film. “Where we ended up doing it was almost next to that house, a few hundred meters away on a corner plot that abuts Auschwitz. There was a derelict house that we always used to pass as we were moving around town,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above).
