At the Efm, the new National Film Institute will be pinning its hopes on a series of titles currently in post-production, many of them feature debuts. Although Hungarian productions are absent from the selection of new films at the 70th Berlinale (20 February - 1 March), that is not the case at the European Film Market, which will be attended by Nfi World Sales, the international sales division of the Nfi (National Film Institute), the new public entity which replaces the Hnff (Hungarian National Film Fund).Standing out from the line-up handled by Klaudia Androsovits are Those Who Remained by Barnabas Tóth (which had made the shortlist for this year's Best International Film Oscar), Final Report by István Szabó (coming out on 27 February in the cinemas of its country) and the fascinating Eden by Ágnes Kocsis (recently revealed in Rotterdam), as well as On The Quiet from promising director Zoltán...
Kocsis was in Rotterdam with her third film ‘Eden’.
Hungarian director Ágnes Kocsis, whose third feature Eden made its world premiere at Iffr this January, is working on a biopic of Pál Szécsi, the famous but troubled Hungarian pop singer of the 1960s and early 1970s.
Szécsi attempted suicide many times and finally succeeded in 1974, aged only 30.
“He had a very incredible life,” Kocsis said of her subject, who remains a huge cult figure in Hungary. “He was half Jewish, half gypsy. He had a girlfriend, a very famous actress, who also had gypsy origins and she also committed suicide...

Ivana Mladenović's semi-autobiographical docu-fiction hybrid has come out on top at Zagreb, with other winners including Babyteeth, Jojo Rabbit and The Diary of Diana B. Ivana Mladenović's semi-autobiographical docu-fiction hybrid Ivana the Terrible has won the main award, the Golden Pram, at the recent Zagreb Film Festival, which took place from 7-17 November in the Croatian capital. The prize, provided by Adiko Bank, was worth €4,000 and was handed out by a jury consisting of filmmakers Dana Budisavljević, Ágnes Kocsis and Elmir Jukić. In their explanation, they stated that the film “easily finds its way to viewers' hearts because of the spontaneity and self-irony of its leading actress and directress” Mladenović. In addition, they claimed that it further blurs the lines between documentary and fiction filmmaking. In the same category, covering filmmakers' first and second feature films, Alejandro Landes' Sundance-premiered Monos won a Special Mention thanks to its unique visual...

Kudos to the AFI Fest for setting up an important sidebar that will expose the best that the next generation of filmmakers have to offer. Bumping up their crop of exciting new auteur cinema, sections labeled "Young Americans" and "New Auteurs" (Cannes heavy) are showcases you'll want to keep an eye on - I can vouch on a good chunk of titles already selected. Among the half dozen included names in "Young Americans" section we find a pair of filmmakers in Alistair Banks Griffin and David Robert Mitchell who were included in our own American New Wave 25 feature this summer. Two Gates Of Sleep, one of my top discoveries of the year from this year's Cannes will finally receive its North American premiere. Filling out the section, we also have the North American premiere for the Locarno preemed Kitao Sakurai's Aardvark (Sakurai was the cinematographer on You Wont Miss...

What I love most about the trailer for Ágnes Kocsis’ Adrienn Pál is the way that it captures a solemn, quiet beauty. There’s something else too; a morbid bit of humour as a woman bites into a puff pastry while sharing the elevator with a dead body.
Adrienn Pál, Kocsis’ second film and her second tour through Cannes, is the story of Piroska, an overweight nurse who spends her days staring at a wall of heart monitors and changing adult diapers. She’s lonely, married to a man she doesn’t care for and escaping from her days by retreating into childhood memories. When a woman sharing the same name as Piroska’s childhood best friend arrives and quickly dies at the hospital, Piroska sets off on a journey in search of her friend.
The trailer for Kocsis’ film is beautiful and by all accounts out of Cannes, the film is one to watch.

Updated 04/19 They've added two titles but none to the actual competition list just yet. Updates are included below
04/15 Yes, they will add a few titles. Looking round the web people expect something like 4 to 5 more films to show up. Speculation that Malick's Tree of Life or Nolans Inception or Schnabel's Miral probably won't die until after they add said missing titles. But if you're heading over to the South of France next month or merely reading along on various Twitter feeds or film blogs, these are some of the titles you'll be hearing about.
Blanchett. Crowe. Scott
Opening Night Film
Because you have to kick off with a starry entry for that maximum red carpet kick. It gets the international and mainstream press excited and you need their eyeballs... even if your festival is for the global cinephiles.
Robin Hood (Ridley Scott)
I'm amused that the tagline is marketing this as an "untold story". Hee.

When Hideo Nakata was mentioned as a possibility, and then named today, I honestly thought it was a misprint and that they mislabeled the pic - but I think we can elevate our expectation level for Chatroom because of scribe Enda Walsh's participation in the project -- she penned Steve McQueen's debut film which I mentioned above. I predicted a healthy Hungarian presence this year, and Ágnes Kocsis' Adrienn Pál is the first mention for that country. - The section I'm most curious about in today's Cannes announcements are those that are among the Un Certain Regard batch. The section is a treasure trove for new discoveries, usually filled with avant-garde films with unconventional stylistic and narrative strokes. These films leave the kind of imprint that remain with me well beyond the final days of the festival - I'm still discussing the merits of films such as Hunger,...
