Maynard James Keenan has been celebrating his 60th birthday all month with two of his bands — A Perfect Circle and Puscifer — along with Primus on the “Sessanta” tour. On Saturday night (April 20th) at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, fans were treated to all three of Keenan’s bands when Tool gave a surprise performance toward the end of the concert.
The tour usually has a no-video policy until the last song of the night, which is Puscifer’s “Grand Canyon,” but Keenan said from the stage that he would permit filming of the next song because he had “picked up some strays” to join him onstage. At that point, Tool’s Danny Carey, Adam Jones, and Justin Chancellor walked out to the delight of the fans.

Tool are notorious for taking their sweet time between albums, especially the 13 years between 2006’s 10,000 Days and 2019’s Fear Inoculum. Now, even singer Maynard James Keenan is insisting that the band can’t wait that long to put out the next one.
“Tool is a more complicated beast with a lot of egos and a lot of other things going on in our lives,” Keenan told Metal Hammer in a new interview. “But all the creativity’s there, the songs and the ideas can flow and the arguments ensue.”

He continued, “As soon as we get past the arguments, we can get shit done! [Laughs] I think we could do it more efficiently. And I think everyone’s on the same page that we have to get through that, because we can’t drag this out another 14 years.”

Tool took 13 years to follow up 2006’s 10,000 Days with 2019’s Fear Inoculum, but bassist Justin Chancellor assures fans that the next album won’t take nearly as long.
“[Drummer] Danny [Carey] is 62 now, so there’s no thought of taking 13 years if we’re gonna do it,” Chancellor told Metal Hammer in a new interview. “We’re gonna have to be more efficient, and we’ve been talking of ways that we can do that.”
The bassist went on to mention his side project MTVoid with vocalist Peter Mohamed, saying, “Maybe taking a leaf out of how me and Peter work with MTVoid – instead of staring at each other going ‘Come on, get it out of ya,’ maybe we could do a bit more at home. We’ll see.”

Nineties rock band Tool continues to rock in 2024.
The tour began last September, and after performing their last North American concert in February, they will be taking a break from the stage until May, when they head over to Germany to commence the European leg.
Joining them on the North American shows will be Elder, a progressive psychedelic rock band.
Frontman Maynard James Keenan made headlines last May for cross-dressing at the Welcome to Rockville festival in Daytona Beach, Florida. His decision to dress in drag created speculation that he did so to go against Gov. Ron Desantis‘ (R-Florida) anti-drag bill.
Keenan denied those rumors, however, and told The Messenger that he had “been cross-dressing since long before these clickbait-junkie dupes were out of diapers.”
“It’s pretty crazy the technology and the prosthetics nowadays, how they’ve come along, and I just was considering bringing the look back,” he said.

With Tool on the road during the first several months of 2024, bassist Justin Chancellor expects the band to hit the studio to begin recording a follow-up to 2019’s Fear Inoculum in the “second half of the year.”
Tool kick off a new US arena tour on Wednesday (January 10th) in Baltimore (tickets available here), and then embark on a UK/European outing in late May.
Heavy Consequence recently caught up with Chancellor to talk about his project MTVoid (stay tuned for our full interview with Chancellor and bandmate Peter Mohamed), and he gave us a bit of insight into Tool’s plans for new music.
“Well, there’s a lot to be put together,” Chancellor remarked. “We have, as usual, loads of ideas, loads of stuff that didn’t get used — constantly writing new stuff. I write something, I immediately know it’s for Tool. It sounds the right way.

Seasoned road dogs Billy Strings and Tool met up in Salt Lake City on Wednesday night, where the bluegrass guitarist lent the prog metal veterans a hand on their 2007 cut “Jambi.” Check out the performance below.
In classic Tool fashion, “Jambi” stretches out across nine-plus minutes, and their Salt Lake concert set design featured a pentagram and some spooky red lighting. We’re not sure how many metal heads in the audience were familiar with Strings, who usually collaborates with (legendary) outlaws like Willie Nelson, but he kept up on guitar all the same.
Tool’s 2023 North American tour continues through November, and then they’ll pick back up in January for even more arena shows. According to bassist Justin Chancellor, when the band finally gets off the road, they’ll head into the studio to start work on the follow-up to 2019’s Fear Inoculum. Tickets to all of their...

After the 13-year wait for 2019’s Fear Inoculum, it appears it won’t be that long before another Tool album arrives. The band currently has a busy tour itinerary ahead of them, but according to bassist Justin Chancellor, the plan is to work on new music once they’re off the road.
Chancellor’s latest remarks offer a firmer timetable for a new Tool record. Last year, drummer Danny Carey told Cleveland Scene that “it won’t take us this long for the next one” — in reference to the decade-plus gestation period for Fear Inoculum — and said that there was “stuff left over from the last one that we’ll develop” and that the band has “head starts on three or four new songs.”
Speaking on the Monday (October 9th) episode of The Vinyl Guide podcast, Chancellor said Tool have already “got many ideas cooking” for the new album.

MTVoid, the duo of Tool bassist Justin Chancellor and vocalist Peter Mohamed, have announced their long-awaited sophomore album, titled Matter’s Knot, Pt. 1, arriving November 10th. The new single “MaBeLu” can be heard now.
It’s been a decade since MTVoid dropped their debut LP, Nothing’s Matter, and the abstract prog of that record is a good point of reference for newcomers to the project.
On “MaBeLu,” glitchy electronic beats and trip-hop atmospheres collide with Mohamed’s emotive singing, which ebbs and flows throughout the mix. While Chancellor is exploring a sound that’s quite different from his full-time band, Tool’s experimental ethos is very much in play here.
“It all started with a child weeping,” mused Mohamed regarding the inspiration for the song [via a press release]. “I heard it very early in between the notes, in between the noises. It was a fragile process that took me to all of...

Primus were joined by Tool members Danny Carey and Justin Chancellor, as well as Queens of the Stone Age’s Troy Van Leeuwen, for a benefit performance at The Belasco in Los Angeles on Monday night (April 17th).
The show served as a fundraiser for Canadian director, animator, and writer Jimmy Hayward, who is currently undergoing cancer treatments. The filmmaker is a close friend of the members of Primus.
Per Setlist.fm, Primus and company played a 10-song set that included six Primus songs and four covers. Among the highlights was a performance of Tool’s “Ænema,” as well as a drum battle between Carey and Primus’ Tim Alexander during a rendition of Led Zeppelin’s “Moby Dick.” Other covers included King Crimson’s “Thela Hun Ginjeet” and AC/DC’s “Whole Lotta Rosie.”

Puscifer have unveiled a new version of “Apocalyptical” as re-imagined by Nine Inch Nails members Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
The 11-minute song arrives a day before the release of Puscifer’s Existential Reckoning: Rewired — a track-by-track reworking of their 2021 album by “friends and members of the larger Pusciforce family.”
Here, the duo of Reznor and Ross shoot “Apocalyptical” through the lens of their own musical style, adding arpeggiated synthesizers and a primarily electronic backdrop of extended dance beats. If not for the recognizable vocal stems — which are drenched in effects — it could easily be mistaken as an original Reznor-Ross composition.
“Sometimes it’s just fun to break stuff,” said Puscifer’s Maynard James Keenan of the re-imagined versions. “Then you latch on to one familiar piece and build something entirely new.”
Existential Reckoning: Re-Wired continues Puscifer’s tradition of following a studio album with a track-by-track remix album.

Gojira have released “Into the Storm,” the fourth single from their upcoming album Fortitude. The Grammy-nominated band will release their latest LP on April 30th via Roadrunner Records.
“This song is infused with the concept of civil disobedience,” Gojira vocalist and guitarist Joe Duplantier said. “Acting accordingly with our deepest wisdom and standing for what is precious and good in this world. The only possible revolution is the one that blossoms from within us. Change will come from individuals. Laws are meant to be bent and shaped to our vital needs.

We already celebrated the birthday of Pixies mastermind Black Francis, but it would be inappropriate to let a particular event pass by without acknowledgment. On this day in 1993, next-level California metal band Tool released Undertow, their debut album. While it is far more raw and unrefined than their subsequent efforts, Undertow remains an important album in the history of metal and in the genre's continued evolution.
Formed around 1990, the members of Tool came from primarily visual backgrounds: Original bassist Paul D'Amour (since replaced by Justin Chancellor) and guitarist Adam Jones were both in Los Angeles looking to break into the film industry, while frontman Maynard James Keenan was a skilled painter and designer. With former Green Jelly drummer Danny Carey in tow, they found success almost immediately, signing a record deal after only a handful of live performances.
