On Friday nights — and special occasions! — IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Appointment Viewing for “Stoners, Seekers, Archivists, and Drinkers”
It took more than 1,700 miles and an honest-to-God movie theater for me to discover that the livestream I’ve been wanting my entire adult life tapes weekly just ten minutes down the street in LA. Yes, I had to fly all the way to New Orleans, Louisiana for The 2024 Overlook Film Festival to stumble onto the genius that is Museum of Home Video.

Earlier this month, a 4K restoration of director John Carpenter‘s 1976 action thriller classic Assault on Precinct 13 played at the Globe Cinema in Calgary for three days. Now the 4K restoration is set to reach more theatres across the U.S. and Canada, rolling out over the next two months! The American Genre Film Archive is responsible for this 4K theatrical re-release, and the company’s theatrical director Bret Berg had this to say about it: “It’s an honor to represent Carpenter’s legacy, given how much personal joy his work has created for us. When it’s something as iconic as Precinct 13 – akin to the heartstopping majesty of Halloween – we’re driven to get this taut masterwork in front of as many audiences as we can. Big thanks to the Ckk Corporation for shepherding this new restoration.”

The American Genre Film Archive, the largest non-profit genre film archive and distributor in the world, has just announced theatrical screenings of John Carpenter‘s 1976 classic Assault on Precinct 13—newly restored in 4K.
“Written, directed, scored, and edited by Carpenter two years prior to Halloween, Assault on Precinct 13 combines the template of Night of the Living Dead with the spirit of Rio Bravo to forge a movie like no other. The story follows a group of police officers (including the mighty Austin Stoker) and convicts as they join forces inside a soon-to-be-closed L.A. police station. The reason? They must defend themselves against Street Thunder, a vicious gang who have taken a blood oath to kill someone trapped inside the precinct.
“Combining gritty action with arthouse style, the film features powerful Cinemascope compositions, a pulsing synth score, and an immersive mood that only Carpenter can deliver.”

When filmmaker John Carpenter first set out to make 1976's "Assault on Precinct 13," even he couldn't have imagined just how big of an impact he was about to make with the violent, seminal crime drama about the most unlikely of bedfellows joining forces in a desperate big to fend off an attack on a defunct police precinct. Written, directed, edited, and scored by Carpenter and packed with its fair share of controversy, the film wasn't quite the well-received hit that younger film fans may have assumed it was at the time. Like many classics, "Assault on Precinct 13" required some time for audiences to warm up to it and, particularly, the exploitation vibe Carpenter was trying to evoke.
Now with its legacy — and that of the remarkably distinctive director himself — fully established, Carpenter fans all across the United States are about to receive some exciting news. Alamo Drafthouse, the Texas-based chain...

In the new movie "Jeff, Who Lives at Home," the title character (played by Jason Segel), really, really loves the movie "Signs." So who better to pop in on a screening of M. Night Shyamalan's cosmic classic than the cast of "Jeff?" Segel, Ed Helms and co-directors Mark and Jay Duplass will help "interrupt" a sold-out March 19 screening of "Signs" at La's Cinefamily Theater. Segel told Moviefone that he loves "Signs" just as much as Jeff does and the Duplass Brothers are also big fans. Helms admitted he's yet to see the alien invasion movie, which means -- if "Signs" had an audience participation component, a la "Rocky Horror Picture Show" -- he might get pelted with tin foil hats. The "Jeff" crew will join regular host Doug Benson, who frequently stages MST3K-style narrations of movies as he and guests "chill on the front row couches, mics in hand,...
