Plot: When a botched assignment leads to an attack on someone he cares about, a cold-blooded hitman (Michael Fassbender) goes on the warpath.
Review: I know what you’re thinking – that premise sounds tired and familiar. Indeed, the hitman revenge movie has become an overly familiar subgenre, with this at least the fourth or fifth movie I’ve seen this year about a profession that may not even really exist (as argued in Richard LinIklater’s upcoming Hit Man). An adaptation of the French graphic novel of the same name, the chief interest here is seeing how Fincher executes such a straightforward genre movie, and indeed, it’s his style that keeps The Killer from feeling recycled.
In a lot of ways, The Killer feels like Fincher’s attempt to deliver Netflix a more straightforward film as payback for them bankrolling his (excellent) passion project, Mank. Yet, audiences who catch...

This article contains The Killer spoilers.
“Desperate for conversation.” Those are the only words uttered by Michael Fassbender’s hitman during his table-side chat with what amounts to something of a professional rival. On paper, the line is a deflection—a typically wry slice of irony shared by an assassin who in addition to being deadly is a master of the deadpan. Yet there is something to this admission in a scene where the film’s titular killer and another murderer beguilingly played by Tilda Swinton decide to share a drink.
Not even appearing for quite 10 minutes in David Fincher’s latest thriller, which just premiered on Netflix, Swinton’s unnamed character is simply credited as “the Expert.” That’s appropriate, because while she ends up on the wrong side of Fassbender’s pistol, the Swinton character brings a certain finesse the audience is encouraged to notice is absent in Fassbender’s protagonist.

The latest feature from David Fincher, a big-budget drama series from Steven Knight and Shawn Levy, and an Oscar hopeful starring Annette Bening and Jodie Foster are among the standout new additions hitting Netflix in November.
With The Killer, Fincher reteams with Seven writer Andrew Kevin Walker to adapt the graphic novel written by Alexis Nolent. The film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival this year and debuts on Netflix on Nov. 10, stars Michael Fassbender as a shadowy unnamed assassin and features a cast that includes Arliss Howard, Charles Parnell, Gabriel Polanco, Kerry O’Malley, Emiliano Pernía, Sala Baker, Sophie Charlotte and Tilda Swinton.
The Hollywood Reporter‘s review of The Killer described the film as “a satisfyingly retro, location-hopping genre exercise with fisticuffs, gadgets (albeit ones bought from Amazon) and smooth-talking antagonists that all plays like a tongue-in-cheek spoof of James Bond movies.”

I’ve had them and I’m sure you’ve had them. Lousy days at work will happen at some point and many times it’s our fault. We’ve “scrooched the pooch” as they say, made an error, perhaps a miscalculation or even an uncrossed”t”. What’s the worst that could happen? Well, we could get fired or perhaps suspended or given a “stern warning” maybe along with a verbal “dressing down”. Yes, that’s with most regular jobs, but what if your profession is life or death? But more toward the latter if you’re a “murder merchant”, or a “gun for hire”. That’s at the heart of a new thriller from one of the most inventive filmmakers of the last few decades. He gives us a look at a “very bad, no-good day”, leading to several wretched weeks in the life of The Killer.

David Fincher’s hotly anticipated The Killer finally made an appearance at Lff 2023 after a delayed release. It is another meticulous masterpiece of Fincher filmmaking for fans, complete with a central character shrouded in mystery, masterminding events that unfold, while draped in shadowy and vivid cinematography.
Based on a graphic novel by Alexis ‘Matz’ Nolent and artist Luc Jacamon, the unnamed assassin (Michael Fassbender) called ‘the Killer’ is playing a waiting game in Paris, watching an apartment of a luxury hotel across the street, waiting for his target and executing the intended hit. An unexpected turn of events spark an urgent race against time to eliminate all threats to the killer’s existence, as the ‘clean-up team’ hunt the hunter.

Operating in a similarly pulpy register to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Gone Girl, The Killer is probably David Fincher’s most lightweight literary adaptation to date. Based on the French graphic novel series of the same name, this comparatively barebones action thriller has none of the social commentary or pop psychology that color those earlier films and their page-turning source material, instead following a titular, unnamed hitman (Michael Fassbender) and his efforts to cover his tracks after a botched contract turns him and his girlfriend (Sophie Charlotte) into the new targets of his paymasters.
An extended opening sequence set in Paris lays out the assassin’s stoic professionalism and pragmatic code of ethics via his ever-present voiceover, piling up pithy existentialist soundbites and hard-boiled, blackly comic clichés in a way that veers close to self-parody. The killer also regularly plays various tracks from the Smiths’s back catalog,...

Michael Fassbender and David Fincher teaming up makes perfect sense. The duo work together so well in their new movie “The Killer” that it’s a wonder that they haven’t collaborated before. Netflix is releasing it theatrically on Oct. 27 and it will start streaming on Nov. 10.
In the new thriller, Fassbender plays a cold, meticulous, philosophizing hitman who must go on a mission to right his own wrong when he makes a mistake on a job. He’s also out for revenge, as is par for the course for a lot of assassin movies. But what isn’t par for the course is Fassbender’s lean and mean performance. We very rarely hear him speak in his actual scenes. Instead, we mostly hear him in a constantly-running voiceover, Fassbender utilizing his rasping voice to good effect. In his scenes, it’s Fassbender’s physicality — from impressive yoga to brutal...

There are many things you associate with a David Fincher film: uncompromising mind games, impeccable visual slickness, and a pulsing atmosphere among them. But while his thrillers often feature tense showdowns, you don’t necessarily think of Fincher as an action filmmaker, per se. His latest film, :a[The Killer]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/david-fincher-the-killer-teaser-shows-michael-fassbender-as-a-lethal-assassin/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'}, is many things – a hitman movie, a survival thriller, a noir flick – but its :a[kill-or-be-killed stakes]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/the-killer-new-kind-of-cinematic-assassin-not-james-bond-david-fincher-exclusive/' target='blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'} lead to the kind of fight scene that goes further than anything the director has plunged himself into before. A master of his craft renowned for his clinical, methodical technique suddenly finds himself in a precarious position. But before we get to David Fincher, let's talk about his new film, "The Killer."
Based on the French graphic novel series of the same name by writer Alexis Nolent and illustrator Luc Jacamon, "The Killer" is the first feature film Fincher has directed since 2020's Oscar-winning "Mank" and only his third in the last 10 years. That's partly due to him being busy helming multiple episodes of Netflix's acclaimed serial killer drama "Mindhunter," as well as producing and occasionally directing the streamer's (also well-received) animated anthology series "Love, Death & Robots." Still, it's just not the same as consistently having a new Fincher film every few years as we did in the 1990s and 2000s.
Maybe that's why the crowd was particularly enthusiastic during his new film's world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival.

David Fincher’s upcoming Netflix psychological thriller The Killer stars Michael Fassbender as an assassin who experiences a crisis of conscience, as seen in the newly released trailer. Watch it below.
Throughout the clip, Fassbender’s titular character repeats his mantra of “stick to the plan” and tenets like “trust no one,” “forbid empathy,” “anticipate, don’t improvise,” “fight only the battle you’re paid to fight,” and “ask yourself, what’s in it for me” in an attempt to remain on course. After a near-miss, however, The Killer must battle both his employers and his crumbling psyche “on an international manhunt he insists isn’t personal,” according to the official logline.
An adaption of the French graphic novel series of the same name written by Matz and illustrated by Luc Jacamon, The Killer has been attached to Fincher since November 2007. Fincher directed the assassin drama from a screenplay written by Andrew Kevin Walker,...

Our first look at director David Fincher’s new film “The Killer,” which debuts on Netflix in November after a limited theatrical run, has arrived in the form of a gorgeously illustrated poster that puts star Michael Fassbender front and center.

A classic dark thriller about gangs and marijuana trafficking in a state where, despite legalization, trafficking continues.

The Last Deal is a film that, without much to say, takes refuge in the common places of the dark thriller. With good photography, the film takes us through the classic drug deal on a journey through a B-movie that, without much to offer, is an easy entertainment without too much action.

With The Rings of Power doing great numbers on Amazon, The Lord of the Rings is experiencing a resurgence. The mixed reaction to The Hobbit trilogy has largely faded and fans are ready to return to Middle-earth. While the first and best source for the enthusiasm garnered by the new series must be J.R.R. Tolkien‘s original books, there’s no denying that The Rings of Power would not enjoy its current level of prestige were it not for The Lord of the Rings trilogy from director Peter Jackson. The movies took a beloved but notoriously unfilmable series of books, filled with strange fantasy races, lost languages, epic battles, and an omnipotent singing hippie, and made them into crowd-pleasing adventures for audiences of all ages.
But it almost fell apart, right at a crucial moment. The studio initially showed remarkable confidence in Jackson’s talents, greenlighting three huge movies to be shot consecutively.

“99 Problems” directed y Michael G. Kehoe and starring Yan Birch was shot as a short film and I am told is to be viewed as a pre-log/teaser to a Television series, which makes me quite excited. The story itself starts with a man coming into a diner, having some business with a lady and then striking up a conversation with the waitress that could end up changing the future. The story and concept remind me of the good ole “Twilight Zone” and older mystery films ala Hitchcock. The main cast is very focused and believable and stars Yan Birch (The People Under The Stairs), Sala Baker (Deadpool 2), Tori London (Texas Chainsaw), Richard Leacock,(911) and Dennis Keiffer (Furious 7). I was particularly impressed by how much Actor Yan Birch can express...

"Can I trust you?" "Put me on a plane and I'll give you everything." Stx has released one final, kinetic trailer for Mile 22, the latest action collaboration between director Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg. This trailer also features the unreleased track from Migos "Is you ready?" Wahlberg plays a top secret, high level CIA agent in their "least understood unit", tasked with finding and transporting an asset to "Mile 22" for extraction. The title refers to the place where the person can be safely extracted, and Wahlberg's characters encounters "some very evil people" along the way. This was filmed in Colombia and seems to take place somewhere in South America. Also starring John Malkovich, Ronda Rousey, Iko Uwais, Terry Kinney, Sala Baker, Alexandra Vino, Poorna Jagannathan, and Lauren Cohan. This movie might just be worth seeing this summer. Here's the third & final trailer (+ an intl. poster) for Peter ...

"You have no idea how evil my government is." Stx Entertainment has launched an intense, action-packed new red band trailer for Mile 22, the latest action movie collaboration between director Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg. Wahlberg plays a top secret, high level CIA agent in their "least understood unit", tasked with finding and transporting an asset to "Mile 22" for extraction. The title refers to the place where the person can be safely extracted, and Wahlberg's characters encounters "some very evil people" along the way. This was filmed in Colombia so it seems to take place around South America. The cast includes John Malkovich, Ronda Rousey, Iko Uwais, Terry Kinney, Sala Baker, Alexandra Vino, Poorna Jagannathan, and Lauren Cohan. This movie looks very cool, especially with The Raid's Iko Uwais kicking some serious ass. Fire it up below. Here's the second, red band trailer for Peter Berg's Mile 22, direct from...

"We fight new wars. The old options... They don't always succeed." Stx Entertainment has debuted the first official trailer for Mile 22, the latest action movie collaboration between director Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg. Wahlberg plays a top secret, high level CIA agent in their "least understood unit", tasked with finding and transporting an asset to Mile 22 for extraction. The title Mile 22 refers to a particular place where the person can be safely rescued, and Wahlberg's characters encounters "some very evil people" along the way who want him and everyone in his unit dead. The cast includes John Malkovich, Ronda Rousey, Iko Uwais, Terry Kinney, Sala Baker, Alexandra Vino, Poorna Jagannathan, and Lauren Cohan. Yeah, so this looks like another slick covert ops action movie from Berg, honestly nothing particular new or unique. Have fun. "Once we have the bag secure, take 'em all out." Saban + Lionsgate have debuted the official Us trailer for the survival action thriller Braven, from director Lin Oeding, starring Jason Momoa. We featured the first international trailer just last week, and get to follow that up with this trailer. The film will open in Us theaters and on VOD in early February, for those interested. Momoa plays a humble lumberback working on the Us/Canada border, who must fight back to save and protect his family when "elite" drug runners run into some problems with a shipment of heroin. The full cast includes Garrett Dillahunt, Stephen Lang, Jill Wagner, Brendan Fletcher, Sala Baker, and Zahn McClarnon. This seems like an entertaining action movie for the current January/February season when there's not many good movies out there. Enjoy. Here's the new official Us trailer (+ poster) for Lin Oeding's Braven, direct...

"They pushed him to the edge." Saban Films has launched the first official, international trailer for an action thriller film titled Braven, which we haven't heard much about before now but it looks badass. Starring Jason Momoa as a humble lumberback working on the Us/Canada border, he must fight back to save and protect his family when "elite" drug runners run into some problems with a shipment of heroin. The full cast includes Garrett Dillahunt, Stephen Lang, Jill Wagner, Brendan Fletcher, Sala Baker, and Zahn McClarnon. This looks like another one of these unassuming-man-is-really-a-badass films, but something about Momoa taking on this group of drug goons seems especially awesome to me. It's worth a quick look. Here's the first official trailer for Lin Oeding's Braven, direct from YouTube (via Tmb): When Joe Braven (Jason Momoa), a humble logger residing along the U.S./Canada border is confronted...

"I'm gunna make this right." Open Road Films has unveiled one final red band trailer for Sleepless, the American remake of the French action film Sleepless Night. This violent action movie stars Jamie Foxx as an undercover cop who angrily heads into a nightclub to search for his kidnapped son. The cast features Michelle Monaghan, David Harbour, Dermot Mulroney, Gabrielle Union, Scoot McNairy, T.I. and Sala Baker. This isn't much of a red band trailer, there is barely anything to it, which is probably a metaphor for this movie. Early word is that it's really bad. You're better off just watching the original film. Here's the new red band trailer (+ poster) for Baran bo Odar's Sleepless, direct from YouTube: A cop with a connection to the criminal underworld scours a nightclub in search of his kidnapped son. Based on the 2011 French film Nuit Blanche, also known as Sleepless Night.

"You touch my son, I'll kill you." Open Road Films has unveiled the first full trailer for an action film titled Sleepless, the American remake of one of my favorite French films titled Sleepless Night. The original film is set almost entirely inside a nightclub in Paris, with some sleek action cinematography. This new one stars Jamie Foxx as an angry father who goes into a nightclub to search for his kidnapped son. The cast features Michelle Monaghan, David Harbour, Dermot Mulroney, Gabrielle Union, Scoot McNairy, T.I. and Sala Baker. There's plenty of violence in this, with guns galore and much more. I'm still partial to the original film, but this doesn't look so bad. Not sure if it'll be set entirely in the club, but Foxx looks wicked. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Baran bo Odar's Sleepless, direct from YouTube: A cop with a connection to...

Sometimes, Americanized remakes can work — despite my own hesitances against them — and I am hoping that is the case for Sleepless, an adaptation/remake of the intense and slick 2010 French thriller Nuit Blance (Sleepless Night). The first trailer has arrived for Baran bo Odar‘s take on the material, starring Jamie Foxx as a cop with deep ties to the criminal underworld who must probe a seedy nightclub to find his kidnapped son. Odar has three features under his belt before this one, and his growing skill in tandem with the solid cast should hopefully offering a thrilling entry into the single-day-film canon, along with doing Frédéric Jardin’s source material justice.
Foxx has got the tough-but-wounded swagger down pat, selling the desperation and hard-toothed resolve of a father on the brink. Sleepless is lensed by Mihai Malaimare Jr. (The Master, A Walk Among The Tombstones) who seems to have...

Parker sees Jason Statham returns to our screens once more for the first time since last summer’s The Expendables 2, and the first leading role since last spring’s Safe.
Naturally, Parker is the latest action/crime-thriller that sees Statham front and centre, and it’s a genre that he’s made a very successful career from in recent years.
The film opened in the Us at the end of last month, and will be arriving on our shores at the start of March. And ahead of its release here, we’ve got a new TV spot to share.
“Parker (Jason Statham) is a professional thief who lives by a personal code of ethics: Don’t steal from people who can’t afford it and don’t hurt people who don’t deserve it. But on his latest heist, his crew double crosses him, steals his stash, and leaves him for dead.

Jason Statham returns to the big screen in a few weeks in Parker, taking the lead once more in the kind of action/crime/thriller for which he’s best known, and for which we all love him for.
We saw a new trailer before Christmas, that promised just as much action as you’d expect from the latest Statham feature, and most recently a new UK poster also featuring his co-star, Jennifer Lopez. And with just two weeks to go before it arrives in the Us, eOne have debuted the first thirty-second spot to get you in the mood.

Jason Statham has carved a very successful niche for himself over the years playing a certain kind of character, and he’s an actor that I’ll always love watching. Parker marks his return to leading man territory, following The Expendables 2 last year, and will soon be hitting Us theatres at the end of the month.
We caught the latest trailer just before Christmas, and now its UK quad poster has surfaced online, giving us another look at Statham alongside co-star Jennifer Lopez.

Jason Statham returns to the big screen next month in Parker, an action/crime thriller that sees Jennifer Lopez starring opposite in the female lead.
Statham has of course made a brilliant career for himself in the past few years, perfecting the Statham persona of the awesome and indifferent action star capable of starring on either side of the law.
This time around, he’ll be on the wrong side but with a right set of morals, and after catching the first trailer and poster back in October, two new international posters have now surfaced online.
