This retelling of the classic tale, from the director of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, is unafraid to make wholesale changes, and all the better for it
They finally got the roof fixed.
In every previous adaptation of General Lew Wallace’s wildly successful 1880 novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ, the instigating event stems from Judah Ben-Hur, the Jewish nobleman, accidentally knocking some stray tiles on to the heads of Roman bigshots as they enter Jerusalem. In 1907 (the 15-minute version), 1926 (Fred Niblo’s luxe and still very watchable silent), 1959 (the enormous Charlton Heston classic), 2003 (an animated version featuring Heston’s voice) and 2010 (a TV miniseries) tiles rained from above, shattering the friendship between Judah and his boyhood chum, the striving Roman tribune Messala. It’s not a stretch to call the poorly manufactured shingles at the Casa de Hur a key prop in cinema history – if not quite Charles Foster...

As Jean-Luc Godard famously never said: “All you need for a movie is a girl and a great white shark.” “The Shallows” presupposes is that adding a cute seagull, a rotting whale, and a few GoPro cameras to the mix probably doesn’t hurt. Unequivocally the best shark movie since “Jaws” (yes, even better than “Open Water” and “Deep Blue Sea”), this back-to-basics thriller either eliminates or reclaims all of the excess and gimmickry that have watered down the genre since Steven Spielberg first invented it — there’s only one killer fish, she’s shot in beautiful 2D, and it doesn’t appear as though the beast has developed the ability to swim backwards as the result of reckless genetic modifications. The film flirts with found-footage, but only in small and supremely effective doses; the shark is a digital effect, but a glorious one whose artificiality is only clear in...

"The Martian" is "Cast Away" in space, minus Wilson the volleyball. And we're totally fine with that.
The new trailer for Ridley Scott's much-anticipated sci-fi film, based on the Amazon bestseller by Andy Weir, shows super likable astronaut Matt Damon struggling to survive after being stranded on Mars.
With only his wits and what little equipment he has left, he must MacGuyver his way through life on the red planet -- all while Nasa plans a rescue mission that is still a few years away. Judging by the trailer, it's going to be a long -- and intense -- wait.
"Martian," which also stars Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig and Jeff Daniels, hits theaters Nov. 25.

The Performer | Tony Hale
The Show | Veep
The Episode | “East Wing” (April 19)
The Performance | In his four seasons as Selina Meyers’ body man, Veep‘s Gary has raised nearly no complaint about the unrelenting abuse from his beloved bully of a boss. The relationship should be a total bummer, but thanks to Hale’s subtle touches — a grimace here, a smile of unbridled admiration there — we’ve come to love Gary for the stumbling sycophant he is. And we thought we knew everything about him, until Hale let the bag man’s real feelings fly free on Sunday.

Rita Wilson, actress, wife of Tom Hanks, and mother of Marnie on Girls, just released a new music video. If you didn’t know she was also a singer too, you need to brush up on your Rita Wilson Wikipedia -- she released a full album, Am/FM, in 2012.
Now she has a new single, “Girls Night In” and a new music video for it:
News: Aww! Tom Hanks helped a group of Girl Scouts sell their cookies!
Wilson gathered her real-life best friends -- including a surprise Sara Bareilles cameo -- for the country(ish) ladies’ anthem. But really, it just made us think of one thing: This is a Taylor Swift party in like 20 years.
This song should automatically start playing every time a Taylor Swift party Instagram pops up in your Instagram feed. Also, Taylor Swift and her friends should karaoke to this song at all of their parties.

This is the true meaning of life: We’re all just aimlessly wandering this world, hoping that our path unexpectedly crosses with Tom Hanks and he blesses us by doing something truly Hanx-y. Like that time he let those random bros steal his glasses and take “wasted” pictures with him:

Or that time a cab driver yelled "Wiiiiiiilllsssssooooooon!!!" at him so Hanx gave him an awesome new nickname and then some:

It was the cast reunion no one saw coming -- especially Tom Hanks.
While at a New York Rangers game on Wednesday night, the 58-year-old actor was reunited with his beloved friend and co-star Wilson the volleyball from the 2000 film Cast Away.

The folks at Madison Square Garden had a special surprise waiting for Hanks when he showed up at the game as they handed him Wilson after a decade and a half of the two being apart. Hanks and Wilson then led a "Let's go Rangers" chant ...sorta. After all this, the Rangers of course won the game.

The actor was watching New York Rangers play Boston Bruins at New York City's Madison Square Garden when Wilson popped in.
You wouldn't believe that it's 14 years since the pair starred in the Robert Zemeckis-directed movie, and their friendship appeared to be stronger than ever.
Hanks went on to win a Golden Globe for his performance as stranded FedEx employee Chuck, while Wilson won an award for Best Inanimate Object at the 6th Critics' Choice Awards.
