Filmmaking rarely travels a straight path, but for “Monster” it was exceptionally twisty. After the legal drama starring Kelvin Harrison Jr. premiered at Sundance in 2018 in the U.S. Dramatic Competition, it’s seen a title change, its first distribution deal fall through, and the original title restored. Producers Tonya Lewis Lee and Nikki Silver say it was all worth it: The movie premiered on Netflix May 7 and was among the top 10 Netflix titles in the U.S. last week.
“It has been a long journey, but it has been a really good journey,” Lee said. “It didn’t go the way we thought it would, but ultimately we landed where we were supposed to land. People are seeing it, they’re feeling it, and they’re responding to it.”

Sundance ’18 crowd-favorite Monster tells the agonizing tale of a 17-year-old honors student in a racially-charged legal battle. Adapted from Walter Dean Meyers’ award-winning book of the same name, Anthony Mandler’s directorial debut is an ambitious take on race and the subjectivity of storytelling via a star-studded cast and soundtrack. Needless to say, this U.S. Dramatic Comp selected title had a huge producing team behind it.

The trailers for “The Giver,” a dystopian adventure based on the 1993 Newbery Medal-winning novel by Lois Lowry that opens this weekend, features a character who was a mere footnote in this influential young-adult source for such futuristic fables as “The Hunger Games” and “Divergent." Not only that, she's Hollywood royalty hiding under a veil of gray hair: Meryl Streep. As the understated though stern Chief Elder, whose gender has been switched for big-screen purposes, she sums up the guiding principle behind “The Giver"’s politely oppressive totalitarian society: "When people have the freedom to choose, they choose wrong." Why would the three-time Oscar winner, whose summer releases such as “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Julie & Julia” and “Hope Springs” are usually aimed more at adults, want to dabble in such doings? “She said yes right away,” says Nikki Silver, a producer of "The Giver" along with another Oscar-winner, Jeff...

It’s been a long road, but in a couple of weeks Lois Lowry's young-adult sci-fi novel The Giver will finally be released as a major motion picture. Jeff Bridges had been trying to develop the film since the book was first released in 1993, originally planning to direct and have his father Lloyd play The Giver. Things have obviously changed, with Phillip Noyce directing and Jeff taking over the title role. The Weinstein Co. are hoping for a successful franchise with this property that predates all the Ya dystopian films that have been flooding the market lately. The studio gave fans in attendance at their Comic-Con panel an extended look at the film, which better showcased the scope of the movie and the expansiveness of the world as the main character begins to see it as it really is.

It was nearly 20 years ago that Jeff Bridges set out to adapt Lois Lowry's then recently published The Giver for the big screen. At the time, Bridges planned to direct the film and have his own father, Lloyd Bridges, play the title character. Now, having aged into the part himself, he's taking on the role for director Phillip Noyce's adaptation of the acclaimed novel. To promote the film, Bridges joined co-stars Brenton Thwaites and Odeya Rush, producer Nikki Silver and Lowry herself on Comic-Con International's Hall H stage today for a look at the August 15 release.

San Diego — The latest young adult novel to head to the big screen, "The Giver," showed its wares at Comic-Con 2014 on Thursday. Oscar winner and movie legend Jeff Bridges was on hand, but none other than original author Lois Lowry stole the show. Based on Lowry's 1993 novel, "The Giver" is actually a drama set in a dystopian future that precedes "The Hunger Games" and "Divergent" by almost 15 years. It finds the remnants of the human race living in a very controlled world after an apocalyptic "fall." When Jonas, a young man played by "Maleficent's" Brenton Thwaites, is chosen to replace the society's Giver (Bridges), a chain of events occurs that could unravel this utopian society. Meryl Streep makes arguably her sci-fi debut playing the political leader of this world. She's joined by Katie Holmes and Alexander Skarsgård, who play Jonas' parents. Newcomer Odeya Rush (the upcoming "Goosebumps") plays Twaites'...

Taylor Swift M.I.A. During The Giver's Comic-Con Panel (Plus, Everything We Learned About the Movie)
With The Hunger Games and Divergent both taking the year off from Comic-Con, there was a dystopian-sized hole that needed to be filled. The book's author, Lois Lowry, producer Nikki Silver, and actors Jeff Bridges, Brenton Thwaites, and Odeya Rush were on hand to discuss the movie and debut exclusive new footage. Absent from both the panel and the footage? Taylor Swift. That and...

Phillip Noyce ("Salt," "The Quiet American") is in very early talks to direct "The Giver" for The Weinstein Co. and Walden Media.
Based on Lois Lowry's celebrated 1993 children's book, the introspective fantasy take is set in a colorless dystopian society in which all memory of human history has been erased, emotion does not exist and citizens' professions are chosen for them.
A 12-year-old boy is assigned to serve as the Receiver of Memories (i.e. the next Giver) and discovers that all is not as it seems.
Jeff Bridges remains attached to play the current Giver, the most important person in the Community. Bridges will also produce with Nikki Silver.
Vadim Perelman ("House of Sand and Fog") penned the most recent draft of the script for the project which has been in development for well over a decade.

Lois Lowry's s 1993 award-winning novel The Giver was a staple of just about every 90s kid's diet of books, and Hollywood has been trying to capitalize on that for years. Studios have tried and tried to make an adaptation of the book, but for whatever reason the project has always managed to hit roadblocks that prevent it from actually getting made. Well, now things are starting to look good again as the film may have finally found a director. Phillip Noyce, who is best known for helming films like Salt, The Quiet American, Patriot Games and The Bone Collector, is now negotiating for the chance to helm the film version of the Lowry classic, according to Variety. The Giver starring Jeff Bridges may land Salt helmer Phillip Noyce Lois Lowry's 1993 "The Giver" children's book may have found its director in Catch a Fire's Phillip Noyce, who's currently in early talks to helm the bigscreen adaptation for Weinstein Co and Walden Media. Jeff Bridges will star and also produces alongside Nikki Silver. Weinstein Co had no official comment on Noyce's involvement, reports Variety. The Giver is set in a society which is at first shown as a utopian society, then gradually becomes dystopian. By converting to "Sameness," the society has eliminated pain and strife, which has also eradicated emotional depth. The story follows Jonas, a twelve-year-old selected to be the "Receiver of Memory" who discovers the power of knowledge. People living in the community are content because they don't know they're capable of a better life, but the knowledge of what they are missing, could create chaos.

You'd be hard pressed to find a book lover not familiar with Lois Lowry's 1993 young adult novel "The Giver," about a colorless dystopian society in which emotions have been removed and people exist in a state of content "sameness." Only one man, The Giver, holds the memories of the time before Sameness and, thus, an unparalleled range of emotion and knowledge.
In the novel, a twelve-year-old boy named Jonas is poised to become the "Receiver of Memory" -- the next Giver -- and the knowledge bestowed on him propels him to escape to save the life of a baby who is set to be executed.
Given the success of "The Hunger Games," another dystopian young adult novel turned into a film, it's no surprise that rumors of "The Giver's" film adaptation are beginning to swirl again. According to Manolith.com, actor Jeff Bridges and producer Nikki Silver are...

Jeff Bridges has been watching this project for years and now he is sixty-one years old, just enough to see himself in the lead role. Oscar winner for his turn in Crazy Heart and nominated for the Coen brothers’ remake of classic western True Grit has also optioned the rights to Lois Lowry’s 1993 futuristic classic The Giver.
Bridges has been looking at this sci-fi novel since the 1990s, when his daughter read it in high school. Therefore, he said:
I originally thought of the role of the Giver as a vehicle for my father, the late Lloyd Bridges; however, at 61 years old, I feel the time is right for me to do it.”
Bridges and his long-time producing partner Nikki Silver (and veteran John Heyman) have finally secured the rights and have plans to move forward with Vadim Perelman, the writer/director behind House of Sand and Fog, to...

Lois Lowry’s The Giver is one of those generation-defining books that practically everyone of a certain age read in grade school and now remembers with a fondness bordering on religion. Oscar winner Jeff Bridges has been trying to adapt The Giver to the big screen without success for years now, but according to a new report in Variety, Bridges and producer Nikki Silver have reacquired the rights to the book, with an...

Their first attempt failed, now Jeff Bridges and producer Nikki Silver are having another go at a film adaptation of Lois Lowry's 1994 young adult novel "The Giver" reports Variety.
The story follows a 12-year-old who lives in a futuristic utopian society where all memory of human history has been erased. His life is thrown into turmoil when he is designated to inherit the role of the Giver and bear his community's vast range of human emotions, which causes him to realize that living a pain-free life comes at a high cost.
Fox and Walden Media were interested in the project back in 2006 but that incarnation fell through, then Warner Bros. Pictures setup the project with producers Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher in 2007. When the rights became available again, Bridges and Silver reacquired them and will now produce through On Screen Entertainment.

But now Variety says the rights have become available again, and now Bridges and Silver are looking to finally get the project off the ground. Vadim Perelman (The House of Sand and Fog) is still attached to pen the script, and while Bridges had initially envisioned the project for his father, the late, great actor Lloyd Bridges, it sounds like he'll end up starring in the film himself. Read on! The younger Bridges says, "I originally thought of the role of the Giver as a vehicle for my father, the late Lloyd Bridges, however, at 61-years-old I feel the time is ...

Lois Lowry’s classic young adult novel The Giver is headed for the big screen courtesy of actor Jeff Bridges’ persistence. According to Variety, Bridges has wanted to adapt the 1993 science fiction book about a world that has been rendered average and bland.
Bridges and Nikki Silver have reacquired the rights to the novel and have hired Vadim Perelman (The House of Sand and Fog) to write the screen adaptation and nearly got to direct a version in 2006. No other hires have been announced but Bridges is now at an age where he could make a convincing title character.
The Giver is the keeper of memory, of experiences good and bad, for a society that strives for a moderate approach to all things. When young Jonas is selected as the next Giver, he forges a relationship with the far older man and both recognize that the world they inhabit is far from ideal.

[1] As a young bookworm, I was a huge fan of young adult author Lois Lowry; today, as a somewhat less young cinephile, I'm a big fan of actor Jeff Bridges. It therefore gives both my past and present selves great pleasure to report that Bridges and producer Nikki Silver have re-acquired the film rights to Lowry's dystopian Ya classic The Giver. Vadim Perelman (The House of Sand and Fog) is attached to write the script, while Bridges will likely star as the Giver himself. Read more about the project after the jump. Bridges and Silver first began working on a feature adaptation of Lowry's award-winning book almost a decade ago, and came close to actually producing the film in 2006, with Perelman attached to direct. However, the project never got off the ground and Warner Bros. took over the rights in 2007. When the rights recently went up for grabs again, Bridges...
