Buenos Aires-based production outfit Mil Monos is teaming with writer-director Pablo Agüero and writer-creator Nicolás Britos to develop dystopian coming-of-age thriller series project “Decibel.”
Produced by Mil Monos’ Maximiliano Monzón, “Decibel” is currently at pilot script stage, and a shoot start is planned by January 2024, tentatively in Argentina.
Written by Britos, the eight-episode, half-hour thriller follows five deaf teenagers born in a mountainous region. When The Hum, a sound that transforms every person who can hear it into a frenzied killer, is unleashed, their deafness makes them immune.
The five teens must choose between stopping the apocalypse to save the planet or letting the world perish in order to start over from scratch.
“Decibel” is one of the ten projects selected for the 9th edition of Co-Pro Series pitches at the Berlinale Series Market, running Feb. 20-22.

"Wait - don't look at your phone!" Rock Salt Releasing has unveiled a new US trailer for an indie animated dark comedy from Argentina called Lava, the latest from filmmaker Ayar Blasco. This originally premiered back in 2019, but is only now getting a US release with a new English-language voice cast. Both versions will be out in the US in March. The near-future sci-fi follows Débora, a "lonely and ineffectual tattoo artist," and her friends as they try to stop and apocalypse. The film is a commentary on screen addiction, as people are entranced by messages on their devices. The new cast features Janeane Garofalo and Cedric Williams; the original Spanish-language voice cast is Sofía Gala Castiglione, Martín Piroyansky, and Justina Bustos. I'm always down for more "animation for adults" that explores crazy cool concepts. This looks fun. Here's the new US trailer (+ original poster) for Ayar Blasco's Lava, direct...

Giant cats, lasers, witches, violence and partial nudity fill the first English-language trailer for Crudo Film’s animated Argentine feature “Lava,” featuring the voice acting talents of Janeane Garofalo. Rock Salt Releasing, which is representing the over-the-top, end-of-the-world comedy thriller at this week’s EFM ahead of its March 15 premiere on major digital platforms, has given exclusive access to the trailer to Variety.
An outside-the-box hit at Annecy’s Contrechamp competition last summer, the film has since featured at several major international festivals including Argentina’s Mar Del Plata and Spain’s Sitges, where it screened in competition.
The near-future sci-fi satire follows Débora (Garofalo), a lonely and ineffectual tattoo artist, and her friends through the likely end of the world. One evening, several friends come over to watch the latest episode of “Gain of Clones” when suddenly the signal cuts out. Everyone in the room loses two minutes of...

Before going into my Women Directors Tracking which I have vowed to continue until women reach a parity with men in the film business and Latino Directors groove, I want to thank Howard Feinstein for watching the most obscure films of Rotterdam to find the jewels! Scratching Below the Surface for Some Rotterdam Fest Gems - indieWIRE. Kudos! I wish I could have seen these!
Howard spotted this one: "A young woman named Rusudan Pirveli brought to the 'Bright Future' section Susa, another story of hard financial times. 'The Lost Generation' is represented here by the absent father of an adolescent boy, who, working for his mother, sells bootleg vodka in bottles. Sadly, he lives under the delusion that dad’s return would ease his and his mom’s hardship. Like Koguashvili, Pirveli eschews unnecessary authorial intervention: Both directors understand all too well that they are living amidst powerful,...

Soon to premiere in Rotterdam is Ayar Blasco's El Sol, a work of animation so deliberately deliberately coarse that it immediately brings Korean effort Aachi and Ssipak to mind. Which is pretty much what you'd expect from a young writer-director-producer who named his own company Crudofilms.
What's the state of society and youth culture, twenty years after the nuclear apocalypse? Well, more or less like this in Buenos Aires. Black humour, nasty words and intelligent rubbish in a unique cartoon for adults by the maker of Mercano el Marciano.
The creator is Ayar Blasco. The film is El Sol. Check the very peculiar teaser below.
