As Marvel True Believers will tell you, writer Al Ewing’s style is a fascinating synthesis of six different comics traditions. He has all of the bombast of Jack Kirby at his Kirbyest, the taste for the occult of Grant Morrison, the unrestrained imagination of Jim Starlin, the visual language of Alan Davis mixed with Christopher Priest, and the methodical formalism of Jonathan Hickman.
Ewing started his career on 2000 Ad books before quickly finding himself in the Marvel stable. After a multiverse-redefining run on Ultimates and giving Bruce Banner’s world a fresh coat of paint in Immortal Hulk, Ewing joined the X-Office to write several books, including X-Men Red and Resurrection of Magneto. Now, as Marvel prepares to release X-Men #35, the milestone 700th issue of Uncanny X-Men that...

Maximum Carnage. Absolute Carnage. King in Black. Every few years, the wild symbiote corner of the Marvel Universe erupts in a saga oozing with violence, drama, and insanity that only Venom and his kind can deliver. This August, the next milestone symbiote event arrives in Al Ewing and Iban Coello's Venom War.
Writer Al Ewing has been laying the foundation for this story since the beginning of his current run of Venom. That's followed Eddie Brock and his son, Dylan, on separate journeys as the symbiote heroes. However, after both have terrifying glimpses of the future, they realize only one of them can be Venom.
However, they may have some competition.
Thanks to Aipt, we have a first look at the Venom War: Spider-Man tie-in series, and the cover depicts Peter Parker back in black and wearing the alien costume. However, if the chains are anything to go by,...

New York, NY — Last year in the pages of Al Ewing and Torunn Gronbekk’s hit run of Venom, Black Widow became host to a symbiote of her own, and the results have been deadly! This July, dive into this startling development as Natasha fully embraces her new place in the symbiote hivemind in Black Widow: Venomous #1!
Announced earlier in Aipt’s new Venom Monday column, the one-shot will be written by rising star Erica Schultz, known for her thrilling work on Daredevil: Gang War and Hallows’ Eve, and drawn by superstar artist Luciano Vecchio, currently delivering a breathtaking saga in Resurrection of Magneto. New York, NY— March 6, 2024 — In July 2019, the world of the X-Men was shattered and reborn on Krakoa in visionary writer Jonathan Hickman’s House of X. In the years since, fans have experienced a golden age of mutant storytelling, filled with bold ideas, astonishing character developments, and revolutionary new takes on the mutant metaphor. Now, the next seminal shift in the history of the X-Men is on the horizon, but first, Marvel Comics proudly presents the final act of the Krakoan Age this June in X-men #35!
X-men #35 will be the milestone 700th issue of Uncanny X-Men and will feature an epic-length story by acclaimed writers and artists who shaped the Krakoan Age, including Gerry Duggan, Kieron Gillen, Al Ewing, Lucas Werneck, Joshua Cassara, and more. The giant-sized issue will also feature a story of family by X-Men master Chris Claremont and offer a glimpse of things to come in the...

The origins of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" begin with the X-Men. A young Joss Whedon read their comic adventures, penned by Chris Claremont, and cites them as an influence on his work; teen heroine Buffy Summers herself is in the vein of Kitty Pryde/Shadowcat.
From 2004 to 2008, Whedon wrote the ongoing comic "Astonishing X-Men," teaming up with artist John Cassaday. Consider the timeframe: "Buffy" and "Angel" had wrapped as classics, "Firefly" was a freshly canceled-too-soon martyr, and Whedon hadn't cracked into the blockbuster movie mainstream with "The Avengers" yet, and allegations of his abusive behavior on set hadn't yet been publicized. His writing an "X-Men" comic felt like nerdy stars aligning.
Is "Astonishing X-Men" worth checking out? It's short and self-contained, which are rare blessings in superhero comics. Whedon also works overtime to repair the reputation of Scott Summers/Cyclops. In the concurrent "X-Men" movies, he was used only...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has made Bruce Banner/The Hulk into just one more of the Avengers. His most recent MCU appearances, "Avengers: Endgame" and "She-Hulk," have ditched the man and monster dichotomy altogether; the Hulk is now just a green and buff Bruce.
For all his personal faults, Joss Whedon was the last writer/director to explore the Hulk's tragedy in his two "Avengers" films. The nascent team's climactic argument in "The Avengers," when Banner silences the room by revealing he "got low, so he put a bullet in [his] mouth, and the other guy spit it out" has real dramatic gravitas.
However, the MCU has altogether elided where that tragedy begins. In the comics, Dr. Bruce Banner was already a troubled man before the gamma bomb explosion that changed his life. Banner's father Brian was a nuclear psychist convinced his own radiation exposure turned his son into a monster.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" ended with a new team of Guardians led by Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper). One of their number was Phyla (Kai Zen), a young white-haired girl and freed test subject of evil geneticist the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji).
If you're a comics fan, then yes, you likely realized that this was indeed the Marvel Cinematic Universe incarnation of the hero Phyla-Vell. If you only watch the movies, you're still thinking (to quote Korath the Pursuer), "Who?!" Well, let me explain.
In the comics, Phyla is the daughter of Captain Marvel — the alien warrior Mar-Vell, not Carol Danvers. Annette Benning played a female version of Mar-Vell in 2019's "Captain Marvel," but the character is traditionally male. Mar-Vell and his progeny are Kree, the imperious race to which "Guardians of the Galaxy" villain Ronan The Accuser (Lee Pace) belonged. The Kree have both blue and pink-shaded skin...

The ambitious Marvel Comics title “Avengers Inc.”, written by Al Ewing and illustrated by Leonard Kirk, has been canceled by the publisher after a 5 issue run:

“Together, they're out to solve every mystery in the ‘Marvel Universe’ starting with their own. Victor Shade was the cover fit the ‘Vusion’ but whoever this guy is, he's not the Vision.

“Is not this simpler? Is this not your natural state?” asks Loki Laufeyson of Asgard, standing amidst a group of humans in The Avengers. “You were made to be ruled. In the end, you will always kneel.” As demonstrated by his position over the prostrate throngs before him, Loki believed that he was made to rule as much as humans were made to kneel. His glorious purpose, as he loved to remind anyone who listened, was power over others.
The Disney+ series Loki followed a variant of the trickster god shortly after the Avengers thwarted his plans to rule. Over two seasons this Loki has suffered the worst humiliations, learning in the grand view of the universe, he amounted to nothing more than a mistake to be pruned. He has found a new belonging, fighting to save the Tva alongside new friends Mobius and Sylvie.

Although Loki’s second season has been well received by fans and critics alike, most of the issues with the story so far have been about its nonsensical time travel plot, the scale (and impact) of its dying timelines, and Loki’s somewhat baffling need to save the Tva given that the multiverse is trying to free itself from He Who Remains’ temporal loom. In the penultimate episode of the season, the show deftly addresses all those issues, and forces us to accept that they were never really issues in the first place.
To date, the only real context we have had for new timelines dying has been squiggly lines on a screen, but “Science/Fiction” finally makes them feel real to us. At first, it’s just a McDonald’s meal disappearing from atop Sylvie’s car. Then, Loki’s bourbon vanishes. By the time we...

New York, NY — 60 years ago, Janet Van Dyne stood alongside Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as they assembled for the very first time and named them the Avengers! Now, during the team’s milestone anniversary year, she’ll lead them into all-new territory in the brand-new Avengers Inc.
Debuting in September, this sharp new series will be crafted by two Marvel masterminds: writer Al Ewing and artist Leonard Kirk. Known for taking some of Marvel’s greatest icons into fresh and unexpected directions in titles like Immortal Hulk and Loki: Agent of Asgard, Ewing now delivers that same treatment to the Avengers mythos by blending noir and super hero storytelling for suspenseful adventures unlike any in Avengers history. With acclaimed work in dynamic comic book titles like the pulpy X-Factor and the recent horror-fueled Sabretooth series, Kirk is the perfect artist to mix thrilling Avengers action with tense investigating and super powered sleuthing.

Twenty years ago, the idea of a Guardians of the Galaxy movie was absurd. The team was a ragtag bunch of weirdos, disconnected from the main Marvel Universe as it was set almost a thousand years in the future, with odd powers, strange enemies, and a vaguely sci-fi adventure milieu. But something flipped in 2006, kicking off a chain of events that concludes with the final chapter in arguably the most beloved individual franchise in the MCU: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Comics are an intimidating medium, which is ironic considering how many of us had formative reading experiences with comic books. But there’s a perception (that isn’t always unfounded) that if you aren’t constantly keeping up with comics, especially superhero comics, you’ll fall too far behind, get lost, and never get caught up. Or that you’ll be roped into buying a bunch of books that you’re not into just to “understand” the ones you’re following. Or that it’s all superheroes all the time.
Well, we say…to hell with that noise! Comics are no different than TV or movies in that there’s an infinite array of genres and tones to indulge yourself in, and even well-established long-running characters routinely set easy jumping on points for newer readers. It’s a new year, and there’s no better time to get into (or back into) reading comics.

The Prince of Power has arrived! In the final post-credit scene of Thor: Love and Thunder, a humiliated Zeus (Russell Crowe) plots his revenge against Thor and the other superheroes who take the worship due to gods. But Hercules has a long history in the comics, which give us some indication of the character’s role in the MCU. Looking at his stories before and within Marvel Comics, we can see how Hercules could restore a sense of high adventure!

Accompanying the announcement is an intriguing poster that consists of four panels, each showing off the costume and helmet of a different Ant-Man. Three of the four panels show us a character we’ve seen before, including the first Ant-Man...
We still need to wait until 2023 before we get to see Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang and Evangeline Lilly’s Hope van Dyne back in action in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, but Marvel is giving Ant-Man fans reason to celebrate in June of 2022!

Who doesn’t love The Defenders? Everyone loves an underdog, and the Defenders were the little team that could. Sure, they had heavy hitters as members. Hulk, Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange among many others, but it was the revolving door of B-listers that gave the book its magic. I fell in love with Valkyrie and Nighthawk because of this book. For some reason it was always the book that Marvel let writers like Gerber, DeMatteis and Gillis have free reign with, leading to some interesting stories in such a mainstream Marvel Universe book. The original run is still looked back on with real fondness, and not just by me. Revival efforts since have been mixed, often because they strayed from the original concept that set the book apart. Knowing Al Ewing’s writing, I’m willing...

When it comes to comic books, the natural thought most of us have is that of costumed heroes and villains with otherworldly superpowers. No matter where you go for your entertainment—be it movies, television, or video games—it won't take long to come across any of the characters we've all come to know from the "Big 2" Publishers.
While superheroes may be the bread and butter of the industry, what about the other stories of comics? Ones that are on the darker, spookier side of lore?
Horror in comics is hardly a new concept, dating back as far as the beginning of the Golden Age of the 1940s and ’50s. At that time, most were adaptations of popular fiction works such as Eerie Comics' New Adventures of Frankenstein and Classic Comics' Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The genre really found its footing when EC Comics introduced the world to what...

This article contains Loki spoilers. We have a spoiler free review here.
The arrival of Marvel’s Loki on Disney+ is maybe the biggest expansion of the MCU since Guardians of the Galaxy brought viewers out into the cosmos. However, the added dimension in Loki is an order of cosmological magnitude greater than just going into space.
The main setting of Loki is the Time Variance Authority, created by the Time-Keepers to guard the one true sacred timeline. But who are these mysterious space lizards, and where do they get off deciding what the true timeline is? Let’s look to the comics to find out.
The Time-Keepers
Loki’s Time-Keepers are introduced in Miss Minutes’ orientation video as survivors of a massive, multiversal war with enormous powers, who decided that in order to prevent that kind of war from ever happening again, they would cultivate the timestream and make...

For the second year in a row, “Schitt’s Creek” won for outstanding comedy series at the 32nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards. Writer-star-executive producer Dan Levy accepted the prize on behalf of the series.
“When we set out to make ‘Schitt’s Creek,’ we simply wanted to tell funny and hopefully meaningful stories about personal growth, love, empowerment and bebe crows,” Levy said in his acceptance speech. “We had no idea how that town would become such a safe space for our viewers as well. But in reality, there is still so much work that needs to be done, and I cannot thank GLAAD enough for their relentless pursuit of trying to ensure that we can one day live in a world where our community feels that same kind of support.”
Niecy Nash hosted the virtual ceremony, which aired on GLAAD’s YouTube channel. The event will also stream on Hulu beginning at 10 p.

There aren’t too many details being handed out at this time apart from the idea that comic book writer Al Ewing will be looking at creating a more positive storyline for the Guardians of the Galaxy that will include several members that will come together as a more cohesive team in order to achieve a goal that’s far more positive than many have been as of late. 2020 was a rough year for just about everyone in one way or another, and while the comics have almost always hinted at dark, foreboding stories that are gripping and fully capable of

Word of mouth on this book has been blistering hot at times, and I am annoyed that apart from the occasional peek at individual issues I haven’t found time to sit down and read through the run. The Alex Ross covers I have noticed though, and they’ve been worth the price of admission alone. What made me pick this one up and review it is that people I know were getting irritated with me that I hadn’t, The cover, and the fact it guest stars both Alpha Flight and the U-Foes. I’m a man who knows what he likes, and likes what he knows, and those things ticked the boxes. So, as a reader coming in for the first (ish) time, will this all make sense? is Ewing newbie friendly, or just writing for the already following?...

Star-Lord, a.k.a. Peter Quill is one of the biggest and most popular character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to the big success of 2014’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” and its 2017 sequel. But before those films, Star-Lord and his fellow Guardians were really something of a lesser-known team existing mainly in the cosmic side of the Marvel universe — and Quill in particular bore little resemblance to the version made famous by Chris Pratt.
But the great thing about comics is that they’re able to take characters who have existed for many years and reinvent them as much as they like — as Marvel did after “Guardians” to make comics Peter more closely resemble movie Peter. And in many cases, since several-hundred-million-dollar budgets aren’t on the line, that means take some big chances that might not make it past the movie studio martinets.

Marvel Comics has officially signed off on making Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, canonically bisexual and polyamorous.
Al Ewing’s new Guardians of the Galaxy #9 story ‘I Shall Make You a Star-Lord’ reveals that Quill has survived after apparently being killed during an explosion back in issue #2, but has been catapulted into a parallel reality. He then meets two blue-skinned humanoid companions there called Aradia and Mors, and eventually enters into a relationship with both of them that lasts for over a hundred years. Unfortunately, Quill unwittingly stole power from The Gods of New Olympus to survive the aforementioned explosion, and this forces him to return to his own reality, which means saying goodbye to his long-time loves.

Marvel Comics has just officially confirmed that Peter Quill Aka Star-Lord is bisexual. The half-human/half-alien cosmic hero has always been something of a ladies man, with his previous romantic partners including Kitty Pryde and Gamora, but in this week’s Guardians of the Galaxy #9, Quill’s sexuality is explored in a deeper way.
“I Shall Make You a Star-Lord” is an ambitious one-off storyline from writer Al Ewing, artist Juann Cabal, colorist Federico Blee and letterer Cory Petit. In it, it’s revealed that Quill didn’t die in an apparently fatal explosion back in issue #2 and was instead shunted into a parallel universe, where he’s trapped on the planet Morinus for a total of 140 years. His companions on his journey through the Twelve Houses of Morinus are Aradia and Mors, a blue-skinned humanoid couple that Quill embarks on a polyamorous relationship with.

On Friday, word got out that Xochitl Gomez (of Netflix’s Babysitter’s Club) was joining Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the sequel to Marvel’s trippiest pre-Endgame movie. And with a title like that, and the presences of Marvel’s foremost reality bender, the internet collectively gasped “America Chavez!” together. But who is she? And why is she such an obvious addition to the cast of Doctor Strange 2?
“Ms. America” Chavez is a relatively recent addition to Marvel canon. She was introduced by Joe Casey and Nick Dragotta in 2011’s Vengeance. She was raised by her two mothers in a utopian pocket dimension. Her moms both appeared to die closing black holes that threatened her city, and inspired by their heroism, she abandoned her reality for the multiverse.
When she arrived on the main Marvel Earth, she joined the Teen Brigade and fought, among others, a teenage Loki.

X of Swords is underway, changing the X-Men’s world immensely, and Marvel revealed one of the biggest changes today: the return of S.W.O.R.D., coming in December from Al Ewing and Valerio Schiti.

So we’ve had the foreplay of Empyre #0, along with a few hints and pointers in titles along the way, and Marvel’s Summer crossover event now stands before us in all its glory. Event it most certainly is, as to read it all you will need to pick up an eye-watering 50 plus titles. It’s almost as though Marvel want to flog you an Omnibus at the end of it all… I’ve said elsewhere that of late DC have been killing Marvel with their big events. Marvel has fallen flat a few times, whereas DC have been bringing new ideas to the table. At first glance, Empyre doesn’t look too promising, as it smacks a little of the huge Annihilation event a few years back, which they seem to want to emulate due to its huge success.

Charles Brownstein, the former Executive Director of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, resigned Monday night following resurfaced accounts of harassment.
Stories of Brownstein’s harassment were signal boosted by comics writer Jennifer de Guzman as comics deals with a reckoning over sexual and emotional abuse in the industry. Her amplification caused a reassessment of Brownstein’s assault of comics creator Taki Soma in 2006, and led to a number of high profile creators swearing off the organization as it became clear the Cbldf had done little to address his attacks. Among those abandoning the Cbldf were James Tynion, IV; Brian Michael Bendis; Al Ewing; Pia Guerra; Ales Kot; Lilah Sturges; and Jamal Igle.
The final straw for Brownstein may have been when Cbldf board members started jumping ship, including comics titan Frank Miller.
Here’s Miller’s tweet on the matter…

One of the big constants in Marvel has always been the endless rivalry between the Skrulls and the Kree. Back in the ‘70s, we got the classic Avengers story, The Kree-Skrull War out of the two alien forces going to war with each other with Earth’s fate in the balance. The What If spinoff (“What If the Avengers Fought the Kree-Skrull War Without Rick Jones?”) is presumably the first massive superhero team-up storyline in Marvel history. The aftermath of the Kree-Skrull War caused the creation of Marvel’s Illuminati. They even retconned it so that Venom’s origins were spawned from the war (its first host was a Kree warrior trying to weaponize shape-shifting against a race of shape-shifters).
Plus, hey, we got a pretty successful Captain Marvel movie based on the feud.
A major wrinkle in the rivalry appeared in the mid-00s when we got to meet Hulkling from the Young Avengers.

This month has been a big one for Simpsons/Marvel crossovers. Earlier in March, The Simpsons aired an episode, titled “Bart the Bad Guy,” featuring a parody of the Avengers movies, guest starring directors Anthony and Joe Russo and Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige as Thanos-like villain Chinnos. This week, it seems Marvel Comics has decided to return the favor as Bart Simpson and friends have made a surprise cameo in the latest issue of Immortal Hulk.
First, some context: Immortal Hulk #32 continues the threat of the Living Hulk Xemnu as he manipulates the general public into believing that he’s the beloved star of children’s show Magic Planet and the world’s favorite version of the Green Goliath, with the actual Hulk painted as a feared monster. How many times can you reboot a book I hear you cry. Well, this being Marvel/ Disney, quite a few times as it turns out. The days of tight continuity and ongoing books are pretty much gone now, and it seems to me comic book runs are treated like TV shows. Each issue is treated like an episode, the trade paperback is the box set, and every number 1 is a season premiere. That issue 1 sales bump is always good for the bottom line, right? Cynicism aside, it is also a chance at renewal, at replacing a stale creative team with a new one full of ideas. So there’s that. With this reboot/ relaunch, I think it’s genuinely going to be the latter. Al Ewing is pretty good with developing and understanding characters, and Cabal’s art looks promising at first glance.

Take a look at a new launch trailer, plus images supporting the Marvel Comics one-shot, "Empyre", written by Al Ewing and Dan Slott with illustrations by Valerio Schiti, available April 2020, as the "Avengers" and "Fantastic Four" team up to confront the 'Kree' and 'Skrull' shape-shifting aliens:

Al Ewing will take over a new Guardians of the Galaxy series for Marvel.
With Donny Cates taking over the writing duties on Thor, there was room for a new writer to pick up Guardians of the Galaxy. And at Marvel's Next Big Thing panel at New York Comic Con, the new team was announced: Juan Cabal (Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man) on art, and Al Ewing (Immortal Hulk) writing.
Ewing is currently lighting the world on fire with Joe Bennett on Immortal Hulk. The book is the first to go full monster movie with Bruce Banner's alter-ego in some time, and it's by far the most successful because there are enormous helpings of body and psychological horror added in. It is weird and discomforting and gorgeous and easily one of the best things Marvel has published this decade.
His work on Guardians looks like it's going to...
