In a new interview with Elle published after the release of “Don’t Worry Darling,” director Olivia Wilde said she agreed with star Florence Pugh about the media focus on the film’s sex scenes – particularly a sequence shown in the trailer of Harry Styles’s character, Jack, performing oral sex on Pugh’s character, Alice.
“I was interested in acknowledging female pleasure that doesn’t come from penetration,” Wilde said. “But it’s interesting because Florence very wisely pointed out that a lot of attention has been given to the sex scenes. And I think she’s so right. I completely agree with her that it’s overshadowing everything else that the movie’s about, which is so interestingly ironic because one of the uses of sex in Victory is as a tool of distraction. When Florence pointed out that this film is so much bigger and better than just the sex scenes,...

Olivia Wilde is continuing to battle rumours of an on-set feud between her and the star of her new film, Florence Pugh.
The release of Don’t Worry Darling, which Wilde directed, was overshadowed by reports of behind-the-scenes drama – from Shia Labeouf denying he was fired from the project to Harry Styles appearing to spit on Chris Pine (which Wilde has since denied).
Speaking to Elle magazine as part of their Women in Hollywood series, Wilde doubled down on her denial of the animosity between her and Pugh, calling the rumours “untruths”.
“This film is trying to ask big questions, but [it’s] ‘Let’s just focus on this sideshow over here,’” the director, who also acts in the film, said.
“Having been a known figure for a while… makes me well-equipped to have a Teflon exterior. But it also means that you’re under a different kind of microscope. It’s brought...

It's time to get acquainted with Sydney Chandler. Fans may recognize her from the 2022 Hulu miniseries "Pistol," in which she portrays Chrissie Hynde, the founder and lead vocalist of '70s rock band Pretenders, marking her first major TV role. She also recently made her film debut in "Don't Worry Darling" as Violet, a housewife and friend of main character Alice Chambers (Florence Pugh). Up next, she'll be starring in Susannah Grant's sex-trafficking drama "Coercion." Even though she's just getting her start as an actor, Hollywood isn't a new concept to Sydney, who grew up with a famous TV coach and dad for a father.
Sydney's dad, Kyle Chandler, is a film and TV national treasure. He's starred in a litany of beloved titles, including "Grey's Anatomy," "Super 8," "Argo," "The Spectacular Now," "The Wolf of Wall Street," and the Godzilla series, just to name a few. In fact,...

"Don't Worry Darling" has earned endless media attention throughout its production and promotional tour. While there was a lot of excitement around the feminist themes the film aimed to address, it also garnered skepticism amid behind-the-scenes drama involving director Olivia Wilde and its stars. In an interview with Vogue, Wilde described the film as "'The Feminine Mystique' on acid." "The Feminine Mystique" is a book by Betty Friedan published in 1963 that outlines the dissatisfaction of American women and was credited for inspiring a new wave of feminism at the time. With "Don't Worry Darling," Wilde drew inspiration from the book and, as she told Vogue, aimed to question, "What are you willing to sacrifice in order to do what's right? If you really think about it, are you willing to blow up the system that serves you?"

“Pugh has never turned in a bad performance, bringing emotion, texture, and richness to everything from ‘Lady Macbeth’ to ‘Little Women’ and ‘Midsommar,'” writes IndieWire’s Kate Erbland in her review of “Don’t Worry Darling”: the psychological thriller-turned-pr disaster that’s dominated Hollywood rubbernecking in summer 2022.
“She excels at turning her characters — all women on the verge — into fully realized people, unafraid to tap into their worst impulses alongside their most admirable ones.”
In director Olivia Wilde’s “Don’t Worry Darling,” Pugh plays mid-century housewife Alice Chambers in what many critics have dismissed as a run-of-the-mill suburban dystopia drama.
The film’s premiere this weekend closes out weeks of tabloid drama But for Pugh, whose performance has nevertheless been widely praised, it’s the latest in a string of unabashed big screen wins.
Pugh made her acting debut with a supporting performance in Carol Morley’s “The Falling,...

Human beings have a natural resistance to change. Every time anything in someone's life is thrown off course, from their daily routine to their preconceived notions about the world, people find themselves either adjusting or resisting. The numerous instances of anti-progressive thought that can be seen in society today (especially that coming from cisgendered white men) are proof positive of this continual phenomenon, and thus the arts — being the bastion of cultural commentary that they are — react accordingly.
Olivia Wilde's second feature as a director, "Don't Worry Darling," is the latest in an increasingly large wave of socially conscious horror and genre pictures. While some of the pitfalls of this trend can certainly be seen in the film, its themes of feminism and misogyny combined with its surprisingly compelling ambiguity makes it a more fascinating experience than its tabloid-style press tour would indicate.

Plot: In the 1950’s a loving housewife begins to question the community where her and her husband live a strangely “perfect” life.
Review: There’s been a lot of chatter about the behind-the-scenes of Don’t Worry Darling. The Olivia Wilde directorial effort showed promise with its first trailer but became gossip fodder. That had little effect on my viewing of the film. Instead of reading about the insanity on the set, I just waited to see what would eventually find its way to the theatre. After all, you often hear stories about problematic features that exceed all the negative press. Sad to say, this is not one of those films. The tepid thriller (?) features Florence Pugh, Chris Pine, Harry Styles, Gemma Chan, and more, and it’s not that thrilling.
When we first meet Alice Chambers (Pugh), she is happily married to her husband, Jack (Styles). The two share an idyllic marriage during the 1950s.

At the time of writing, the internet at large is still arguing about whether Harry Styles spit on Chris Pine at the premiere of the pair’s beleaguered new thriller, Don’t Worry Darling. It’s only the latest juicy (but in this instance probably not that delicious) slice of drama from the film’s production and subsequent review-panning debut, which has included the kind of intriguing nonsense that expensive PR bods spend considerable time micromanaging on big budget projects so it never sees the light of day, but because Don’t Worry Darling has a much, much lower budget than, say, last year’s Eternals, which also (briefly) starred Styles, the wheels have basically completely come off now, with a new tidbit emerging from the cast and crew on average every few hours. On the flipside, Don’t Worry Darling really didn’t need any of that expensive PR,...

I never start a review commenting on whatever the so-called Film Twitter Mafia have to say about it, sight unseen. Starting back at CinemaCon in April when its directo/co-star Olivia Wilde was served legal papers onstage regarding her custody hearings with ex Jason Sudeikis, there has been non-stop gossip about her movie Don’t Worry Darling. There has been so much of it, right up to today’s Venice Film Festival press conference (covered by my colleague Nancy Tartaglione) that you almost have to address the elephant in the room. Others can do that, but let us not forget there is also a movie here, one I was able to preview as just that a few weeks ago in Burbank. As a reviewer, to quote Being There’s Chauncey Gardner, “I like to watch,” and that means only what is on the screen.

By now, the question isn’t whether you’ve heard of Don’t Worry Darling, Olivia Wilde’s social-thriller-cum-thirst-valentine — it’s what you’ve heard about it. High-profile hook-ups, the humiliating serving of papers during public appearances, leaked videos, cross-media sniping, several pints’ worth of alleged bad blood, the ghosting of press conferences, etc. Every film production is dysfunctional in its own way. This movie stands head and subzero-temp-cold shoulders above its peers in terms of salacious scuttlebutt, however. Wilde has said she set out to make “The Feminist Mystique on acid.

Florence Pugh is one of our finest working actresses today, particularly because she knows how to use her face like she's not saving it for later. Pugh's face will contort into a grimace, a manic grin, or a full-throated sob all within the span of a minute — which is what makes her so perfectly suited to playing women on the verge of a breakdown.
It's also what makes Olivia Wilde's highly anticipated sophomore effort "Don't Worry Darling" perfectly tailored to Pugh, who stars in the psychological thriller as a woman happily living in a suburban idyll with her loving husband (Harry Styles) ... until she starts to feel that something is wrong. Pugh is unsurprisingly immaculate as the slowly unraveling housewife, but as much as "Don't Worry Darling" tries to match her stroke for stroke, both in Wilde's many, many stylistic flourishes and in Katie Silberman's high-minded script,...

Harry Styles shows off his acting chops in Rolling Stone‘s exclusive sneak peek at the upcoming psychological drama, Don’t Worry Darling. In the film, Styles and costar Florence Pugh play Jack and Alice Chambers, a seemingly happy couple living in a seemingly idyllic company town operated by the firm Jack works for — but it quickly becomes apparent that things aren’t always what they appear to be.
In the short clip, Styles stresses the importance of not going against the grain in order to maintain the life they have together.
