The 2011 Nebula Awards, presented by the Science Fiction Writers of America for excellence in the field, were presented last night in a ceremony at the Nebula Awards Weekend, held in Arlington, Virginia. Walter Jon Williams was Toastmaster, and Astronaut Michael Fincke was the keynote speaker. At the end of last year, we brought you the news when Universal Pictures and SyFy Ventures joined forces to create Syfy Films. The new film company was said to create theatrical films under the SyFy brand that would be distributed by Universal Pictures. They planned to release two movies per year by 2012, and now it seems they have their first project underway.

Universal and the SyFy Channel have partnered on a feature film venture [1] called Syfy Films, and the company has just picked up rights to the long-running superhero anthology Wild Cards. Superhero developments are a dime a dozen these days, but this one might have a better chance than most, because it bears the name of A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin. The recent publication of the latest book in Martin's fantasy epic, combined with the fandom for HBO's series based on the novels, means Martin's popularity is at an all-time high.
