In our new era of prestige television, no other show on the airwaves has depicted the harsh realities and painful sacrifices that have to be made in the high stakes world of espionage more than FX's "The Americans." In the series, which ran for six seasons, Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys play two Russian spies who are assigned together as an unassuming husband and wife couple named Elizabeth and Phillip Jennings. Working for the Kgb, they must blend in with the American way of life that they detest (at least at first) to steal secrets from the U.S. during the Cold War. By the series' end, they've committed unforgivable acts and forever altered their relationship with their daughter, and are then forced to return to a homeland they no longer recognize. It's a dark fate, and one they manage to survive because they have each other and they've...

With “Dear Evan Hansen,” a divisive Broadway musical sticks its neck out in movie form, trusting a shelf full of Tonys to sweep it from improbable stage success to mainstream glory — except when does that work? In a year with a well-above-average number of musicals popping up on the big screen, “Dear Evan Hansen” is the farthest below average in terms of actual merit: a curve-crashing after-school special, dressed up with so-so songs (not so much show tunes as lightweight pop-music imitations), about how people process tragedy in the age of oversharing.
That said, your mileage may vary. The movie pushes all sorts of buttons — or “triggers,” as the kids are calling them these days. Where some audiences feel seen, others are bound to take offense, and that split is what makes the Steven Levenson-written show (with music and lyrics by “La La Land” duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul) such a fascinating phenomenon.

Photo: Amy Adams/Universal Pictures With the announcement that Universal Studios will be projecting Dear Evan Hansen on the big screen, there has been circulation surrounding the top-notch casting potential. Written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, Dear Evan Hansen is a six-time Tony award-winning musical about a well-intentioned lie spinning out of control and the teenager trapped in the middle. Ben Platt will be reprising his critically acclaimed role as Evan Hansen, joined by Kaitlyn Dever as Zoe Murphy, Julianne Moore as Heidi Hansen, and most recently, Amy Adams as Cynthia Murphy. This exciting announcement has both delighted the expectant audience while raising more than a few eyebrows: is Amy Adams qualified to take on such a musically-inclined performance? Despite her Academy-renowned acting talents, most do not recognize Adams as carrying a rich history in musical theatre. This certainly is worth revisiting before she steals our breath away in the upcoming musical drama.
