Cannes’ Critics Week has wrapped the ninth edition of its Next Step programme which helps short film directors from its past festival selections make the leap between short and feature films.
This year’s crop of aspiring filmmakers included Portugese director Sofia Bost, Mexican filmmaker Jorge Sistos Moreno, British filmmaker Joseph Pierce, Greek filmmakers Evi Kalogiropoulou and Manolis Mavris, and Chinese directors Lin Tu and Hao Zhao.

Two more sidebars at this year’s Cannes Film Festival have unveiled their lineup. First up, Critics Week (aka La Semaine de la Critique), which brings together first and second features, has announced its 2022 slate, which includes a special screening of Jesse Eisenberg’s When You Finish Saving the World, which we reviewed at Sundance. While the festival is primarily geared towards discoveries, it also includes a new short by Yann Gonzalez.
Acid (Association for the Distribution of Independent Cinema) also unveiled its nine features, which notably includes a new film by Damien Manivel, who recently directed the acclaimed Isadora’s Children. Check out both lineups below.

Cannes Film Festival’s parallel sidebar Critics’ Week has unveiled the 11 features and 13 shorts that will comprise its 2022 edition. Scroll down to see the full lineup.
Opening the event will be Jesse Eisenberg’s comedy-drama When You Finish Saving the World, which premiered at Sundance this year and has its international premiere in Cannes. The film stars Julianne Moore and Finn Wolfhard as mother and son.
Closing the program will be Jung July’s Next Sohee, a detective drama starring Bae Doona.
This is the first selection for new Critics’ Week artistic director Ava Cahen, who becomes the second female director in the event’s history.
Cannes Critics’ Week runs May 18-26 this year.

The 24th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival has announced the 30 official selections from 21 countries for this year’s Naff project market. The selections consist of 19 projects for the It Project (including one Korean-Vietnamese co-production) and 11 projects for Project Spotlight Korea. A total of 181 projects from 40 countries were submitted for consideration this year. Selected projects are listed in the table below.
Projects from South Korea and other parts of Asia captured the philosophy that lies deep within the framework of genre films by exploring a variety of topics, such as tradition and political/social conflict, gender identity, and class distinction. (Project Spotlight highlights projects from one Asian country each year; this year’s spotlight will be on South Korea.)
The judges for this year included Kini S. Kim, Kim Young, Jonathan Kim (CEO of Hanmac Culture Group), and Joyce Heeyoung Cho.
