Though he's only directed three films, Jordan Peele's cineliterate, socially conscious horror movies yield myriad Easter eggs and sometimes call attention to his influences outright. In "Nope," for instance, there's a motorcycle slide that had many "Akira" fans nodding along, thinking, "I understood that reference". The original "Akira" motorcycle was actually inspired by "Tron," so it's as if Peele and his forebears just have their arms linked in a "4,000-mile-long chain" of film homages à la the Hands Across America commercial in "Us."
Like the movie brats of the 1970s, the Oscar-winning "Get Out" writer and director is part of a continuum of auteurs who wear their hyper-referentiality as a badge of honor. Art begets art, and Peele begets "Jaws" references. Steven Spielberg's 1975 film gave rise to a new kind of spectacle, the summer blockbuster, so it should come as no surprise that — as Peele goes into blockbuster...

The Jordan Peele-directed horror films "Get Out" and "Us" open with similarly eerie prologues. In "Get Out," a fellow named Andre Hayworth (Lakeith Stanfield) is chatting on his phone while strolling through the suburbs at night, only to be attacked and kidnapped by a masked individual. In "Us," a young girl named Adelaide Wilson (Madison Curry) is visiting the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk with her parents when she wanders off, coming face-to-face with her doppelgänger.
From there, both movies jump ahead in time. Where "Get Out" shifts its focus onto a Black photographer named Chris Washington (Daniel Kaluuya) about six months after Andre's kidnapping, "Us"...

During a year in which the world finds itself increasingly in the throes of totalitarianism and corruption, when institutions, traditions and good old common sense seems to be crumbling before our very eyes, when the world itself appears to be catching fire, a spirit of thanksgiving may be one that is hard to come by. But there are reasons to give thanks even in light of those realities, ones even directly to those realities, and I encourage you to seek out those reasons, be as grateful as is warranted, and find ways to express that gratitude. In other words, don’t let the bastards get you down.
In the world of the movies, there was the usual degree of lousy movies, some franchise-related, of course, but some that were pretty shitty of their own accord. And at the same time, there were lots of reasons to justify gratitude. Here are...

One of the most anticipated horror movies this year was Jordan Peele’s follow-up to ‘Get Out’, ‘Us’ lead by Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke. Not only did it win over the internet but horror fans and critics alike gave the film a fresh Rotten Tomatoes score. With the film now available to own, Director Jordan Peele and star Winston Duke unravel the detail in the making of the film.

I was captivated by Jordan Peele’s directorial debut, Get Out, until it devolved into over-the-top horror film fare, spoiling the social commentary. Apparently, I was not alone in this and Peele decided his sophomore outing would be a straight on horror film, Us. When it opened, my students flocked to see it, many enjoying it, and several saying they needed to see it twice to fully appreciate it.
The film, from Universal Home Entertainment, is out on home video tomorrow, and I have to say, I don’t get the fuss. Once again, Peele layers in social commentary mixed with his horror tropes (a modern-day Body Snatchers?), but I was fairly bored for the majority of the film.
In short, your perfect nuclear family, headed by Lupita Nyong’o (in a part Peele wrote just for her) and Winston Duke, has their lives turned upside down when their home is invaded by red-tracksuited doppelgangers.

There's been a ton of discussion surrounding Jordan Peele's newest thriller, Us, due to its many Easter eggs and secret messages. One of the main talking points that has people racking their brains is the notable presence of rabbits throughout the film. Peele has previously said that he actually does have a fear of rabbits, and it doesn't help that their ears have a similar twofold appearance to scissors. In December, he told Entertainment Weekly, "I think rabbits and scissors, they're both scary things to me, and both inane things, so I love subverting and bringing out the scariness in things you wouldn't necessarily associate with that." He also told Rotten Tomatoes that rabbits look like sociopaths if you stare at them long enough (which is kind of hilarious and also provides some backstory for his cameo in the film).

Jordan Peele's Us creeps into theaters this weekend, but young fans of the Oscar-winning director may be scratching their heads about the opening scene, which takes place in 1986 and features a television commercial for Hands Across America.
Although modern critics deride its overall impact, Hands Across America was a real charity event designed to raise awareness about famine in Africa and homelessness in the United States. The event took place on Sunday, May 25, 1986, and involved 6.5 million people linking hands in a human chain across the continental United States. The benefit raised $34 million, although less than half that money went to the cause due to the rather significant promotional costs. Of course, Peele's motives for the commercial go much deeper than testing our pop culture knowledge.

When two people bear a striking resemblance to one another, we often call those similarities uncanny. The word is so rarely used outside that context, in fact, that we may forget its most basic definition: “seeming to have a supernatural character or origin.” For two things to have a truly uncanny resemblance, simply looking alike isn’t enough — they have to arouse discomfort for being nearly, but not entirely, identical. The more alike they are, the more unsettling their small differences become.
Jordan Peele understands that distinction, and he puts it to effective use in his second film, “Us.” A horror-thriller about a family of four confronted by their ill-intentioned doppelgängers, it brings to mind not only such genre influences as “The Twilight Zone” but also this passage from Sigmund Freud’ 1919 essay “The Uncanny”:
“The subject of the ‘uncanny’ is a province of this kind. It is undoubtedly related...

Not that anyone expected it, but Jordan Peele did not suffer a sophomore slump here. After making a highly praised and Oscar winning debut with Get Out, he’s back with another horror outing in Us. The success of the former was no fluke, ladies in gentlemen, as the latter is the real deal. At the same time, can a film be wildly overpraised and also be rather terrific? In this case, that’s what I found Us to be. Despite not sticking the landing, Peele shows us he’s an emerging genre master. The Academy Award chatter can wait for another day, but hitting release today, Us is a jolt of thought provoking horror. Us is a horror/thriller, though one with a lot on its mind. After an introduction to Adelaide Wilson as a child during a formative moment, we meet her again in the present day. Adelaide...

Us is Jordan Peele’s second directorial feature after his highly successful and critical acclaimed Academy Award-winning directorial debut Get Out released in 2016. Myths of duplicates and alter-egos have persisted for thousands of years... In Zoroastrianism, one of the world's oldest religions, the deity Spenta Mainyu is The Holy Spirit while his "evil twin" – Angra Mainyu – is the Destructive Spirit. In Ancient Egyptian mythology, a ka is a "spirit double" with the same memories and feelings as its counterpart. Native American folklore depicts an upper world where the good people reside and an underworld where their evil doubles dwell. Today, we refer to look-alikes as doppelgängers, a German word meaning "double-walker." When it comes to cinema, numerous iconic films have tackled the phenomenon, from Vertigo (1958), Persona (1966), and Dead Ringers (1988), to more recent movies like The Prestige (2006), Black Swan (2010), and Enemy (2013). Now, Academy Award winner Jordan Peele follows up his provocative 2017 horror-thriller Get Out with a definitive take on doppelgängers in Us. Opening in 1986, a young girl (Madison Curry) wanders off from her parents...

Jordan Peele’s follow up to his critically acclaimed post-race horror debut Get Out is an equally chilling, thought-provoking, and metaphor laden doppelgänger horror mystery about the failure of the American dream. Starring Lupita Nyong’o, Elisabeth Moss and Winston Duke, Us might lack the element of surprise and the coherence of its predecessor, but still manages to hit all the right notes when it needs to, further cementing Peele’s status as a brilliant innovator.
The film starts in the mid 80s with a young Adelaide Wilson (Madison Curry) who is seen enjoying an evening out with her bickering parents along the Santa Cruz boardwalk. After wandering off while her dad is elsewhere occupied, the young girl finds herself on the beach where she inadvertently enters a seemingly innocuous house of mirrors where she witnesses something no child of her age should ever have to.

Where do I even begin? There are a lot of great horror movies that have been announced for 2019 that I have been supremely excited for, but admittedly, my most anticipated movie of this year was Jordan Peele’s Us. With the astounding (and much-deserved success) of Get Out in 2017, I was eager to see what Peele would bring to the table for his sophomore directorial effort, and with Us, he does not disappoint. A densely packed thriller that wastes no time establishing the unsettling events that Peele unleashes here, purposefully utilizing every single frame of film, each cinematic bread crumb that Peele drops for viewers early on perfectly leads towards the film’s stunning finale that will undoubtedly leave horror fans with tons of material to discuss and ponder for years to come.
But make no mistake—as far as truly great genre storytelling goes, Peele has quickly established himself...

Examining the nature of humanity can be a dark and depressing venture, now more than ever. A world that feels divided, one which you fear, becomes your greatest enemy. These are the building blocks for “Us,” writer-director-producer Jordan Peele’s highly anticipated, thrilling and satisfactory follow up to his Oscar-winning 2017 debut “Get Out.” It’s also where he cements his place as one of the best horror creators of our time, knowing that life’s true horror stems from what humans are capable of doing to each other.
Adelaide Wilson (Lupita Nyong’o), her husband, Gabe (Winston Duke), and their children Zora and Jason (Evan Alex) head to the beach town of Santa Cruz for their summer vacation. They’re an all-American family, with a father who has a degree in dad jokes, a mom who tends to the needs of all her family, a monosyllabic teenager who never looks...

Jordan Peele’s 2017 debut “Get Out” was a landmark in African-American storytelling, broke box-office records, and served as a representational wakeup call to the film industry — but it wouldn’t have carried so much weight if it weren’t also such a gratifying viewing experience. His sophomore effort, “Us,” proves that surprise hit wasn’t a fluke. Peele’s second outing as writer-director confronts the ridiculously high expectations of its predecessor by pivoting to a broader canvas of ideas about the nation’s fractured identity. In the process, it gives audiences exactly what they want by delivering what they least expect.
As it turns out, the ultimate zeitgeist movie in 2019 harkens back more than 30 years. “Us” imports Reagan-era America to a mortifying contemporary context that revisits the past as a nightmare that won’t die. In the process, it unfolds as a satisfying dose of relentless, anxiety-inducing survival antics designed to keep viewers perpetually uneasy,...

As the year 2019 continues to just fly by, the SXSW Film Festival is already right around the corner, kicking off on Friday in Austin, Texas. Not only does SXSW boast several impressive studio horror premieres this year, both opening and closing the festival, but it also features a Murderers' Row of talent in their Midnighters slate as well. This writer will once again be on site at the fest representing Daily Dead, and while I am really excited about everything on my docket over the next few weeks, here are 13 things happening at SXSW 2019 that have me especially amped to check out throughout all the film-related festivities.

Exclusive: Single-camera comedy Bless This Mess has recast a series regular as it is starting production on its six-episode midseason order by ABC.
Child actress Madison Curry, currently seen in Jordan Peele’s Us, has been cast as Constance Terry’s (Pam Grier) daughter Cherry. A decision was made at the time the Bless This Mess pilot was picked up to series by ABC to retool the character of Cherry from a teenager, played in the Fox pilot by Christina Offley, to a young child. That led to the recasting. Cherry’s scenes in the pilot were reshot Friday, with production on the rest of the episodes starting today. To mark the first day of shooting, the cast, including Curry, took a group photo to post on Twitter. You can see it below.

"It's like there's this black cloud hanging over us." This will give you the chills. A new international trailer has arrived for Jordan Peele's horror thriller Us, opening in theaters next month. This trailer is from Korea, and it's similar to the first trailer, but plays up all the quietness and unexplainable confusion of the horror elements way more than that first one. There's a number of really unsettling silent moments in this trailer where they just let the eeriness of this doppelgänger family build tension. I'd actually say this is the best trailer for Us yet. Lupita Nyong'o and Winston Duke star as husband and wife of a family who take their kids to their beach house, but mysterious people appear and things get really weird. Also starring Elisabeth Moss, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Kara Hayward, Anna Diop, Tim Heidecker, Nathan Harrington Shahadi Wright Joseph, plus Evan Alex and...

Peele revealed the new poster on Twitter, and you can view it below. Written and directed by Peele, Us stars Lupita Nyong’o, Elisabeth Moss, Winston Duke, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Tim Heidecker, Anna Diop, Shahadi Wright Joseph, Madison Curry, Evan Alex, Cali Sheldon, and Noelle Sheldon.

After sending shockwaves across contemporary culture and setting a new standard for provocative, socially-conscious horror films with his directorial debut, Get Out, Academy Award®-winning visionary filmmaker Jordan Peele returns with another original nightmare that he has written, directed, and produced.
Set in present day along the iconic Northern California coastline, Us, from Monkeypaw Productions, stars Oscar® winner Lupita Nyong’o as Adelaide Wilson, a woman returning to her beach-side childhood home with her husband, Gabe (Black Panther’s Winston Duke), and their two children (Shahadi Wright Joseph and Evan Alex) for an idyllic summer getaway.
Haunted by an unexplainable and unresolved trauma from her past and compounded by a string of eerie coincidences, Adelaide feels her paranoia elevate to high-alert as she grows increasingly certain that something bad is going to befall her family.

Regardless of who wins the Super Bowl, Jordan Peele fans scored big as the second trailer for the director’s upcoming horror flick, “Us,” has just been released.
“You know how sometimes things line up?” Lupita Nyong’o’s character asks in the spot. “Coincidences? Since we’ve been up here, they’ve been happening more and more. It’s like there’s this black cloud hanging over us.”
“Us” centers on Adelaide and Gabe Wilson (Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke) as they take their kids to Adelaide’s childhood home in Northern California for the summer. They unwind with their friends (Elisabeth Moss and Tim Heidecker), but Adelaide, still haunted by a past trauma, becomes paranoid that something is about to hurt her family.

"There's a family in our driveway." Universal has released a 60-second TV trailer for Super Bowl Sunday for Jordan Peele's new horror thriller Us, arriving in theaters everywhere next month. The cast includes Elisabeth Moss, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Kara Hayward, Anna Diop, Tim Heidecker, Shahadi Wright Joseph, Nathan Harrington, plus Evan Alex and Madison Curry as their kids. Universal has dropped a Christmas Day present with the first look at Jordan Peele’s anticipated Us, the follow-up to his Oscar-nominated hit Get Out.
It opens with the Wilson family, Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o) Gabe (Winston Duke) and their children, traveling up the Northern California coast to Adelaide’s childhood beachside home, to the strains of Luniz’s “I Got 5 On It.” We next see the family on the beach, chatting it up with the Tylers (Elisabeth Moss and Tim Heidecker) when Adelaide notices her young son has wandered off. She finds him staring at a statue-like man standing alone on the beach. (Hint that terrifying things are about to happen).
Cut to later that night when Gabe finds four people holding hands and dressed in red, staring at the house and standing silently at the bottom of their driveway. Gabe approaches with a baseball bat and a warning,...
