Director Elizabeth Banks’ “character-driven thriller” Cocaine Bear (read our review Here, get a copy at This Link) wasn’t exactly a blockbuster – it earned $89 million at the worldwide box office on a budget in the range of 30 to 35 million – but it did get a lot of positive attention when it was released. And I thought it was a blast to watch. So I welcome a Cocaine Bear 2… and during an interview with Rolling Stone, Banks said she would also welcome it.
When asked about the possibility of working on a sequel, Banks told Rolling Stone, “I had an absolutely great time working on the (first movie). I loved how subversive, crazy, silly, and funny it was. I loved surprising people with the cast. I don’t think anybody was expecting Margo Martindale, who’s 70 years old, to shoot that kid. Get your mirror plates ready, and don’t leave any food out in the open because Cocaine Bear is about to rage on Peacock. The laugh-out-loud R-rated comedy is coming to the streaming service 50 days after its theatrical debut on April 14. Elizabeth Banks directs from a script by Jimmy Warden about a massive black bear that rampages through the woods after finding bags of cocaine in the woods.
If you’re unaware of the true story that inspires Cocaine Bear, well, it’s a doozy. In 1985, convicted drug smuggler Andrew Thornton was on a smuggling run from Columbia and had dumped several packages full of cocaine before jumping from the plane himself. Unfortunately, he hit his head on the tail of the aircraft and wound up in a free fall to the ground, where he was found dead in someone’s driveway. Several months later, authorities discovered a 175-pound black...

Just when you thought the film “Cocaine Bear” wasn’t a strange enough concept to intake, “Cocaine Cat” is now trending online after a wild African cat tested positive for the stimulant drug.
First things first: the cat —which is named Amiry — is in the hands of animal caretakers and is receiving treatment. This all started when officials in Ohio responded to reports that a “leopard” was stuck in a tree. When authorities arrived they found what is categorized as an African serval cat, a member of the feline family that is illegal to own in the state.

This post contains spoilers for "Cocaine Bear."
If you love slasher films and you also love bears, then boy are you gonna love "Cocaine Bear," playing in theaters now. The movie is exactly what the trailers promised it would be: a story about a bear who gets exposed to a lost shipment of cocaine, and then goes on a 90-minute killing spree in her quest to find more cocaine. As outlandish as it sounds, "Cocaine Bear" was actually inspired by a true story -- except the real cocaine bear died of a massive overdose instead of going on a rampage.
There's a lot of over-the-top violence and gore in this film, although maybe not as much in the first half as we might've wanted. Throughout the first third, "Cocaine Bear" has a tendency to cut away right as the bear attacks. At first it might seem as if this movie...

“‘Nobody likes to watch people getting eaten by lions.”
Apparently this was the response by the late Sumner Redstone during his National Amusement exhibition days after he saw a screening of the 1981 Tom Skerritt lion movie, Savage Harvest, relayed to me by an exhibition source who overheard him.
As funny as Redstone’s reaction was, it’s an axiom that has rung true: Certain animal-eat-people movies just don’t work. Moviegoers chomp on sharks movies like Jaws and Meg, but other treacherous animal movies aren’t prime to high openings, i.e. Paramount’s alligator movie Crawl and more recently Universal with its Idris Elba title Beast — which was a lion move.
However, this weekend Universal proved that everybody likes to watch people get eaten by bears, as their R-rated Elizabeth Banks-directed Cocaine Bear opened to $23M.

“Cocaine Bear,” in which a wild bear accidentally ingests a ton of blow and goes on a crazed rampage, hit theaters on Feb. 24. Is it the over-the-top horror comedy the trailer promised or does it — like a certain stash of cocaine — completely miss its target?

Here’s what you need to know about the movie, which is directed by Elizabeth Banks and stars Keri Russell, Ray Liotta and O’Shea Jackson Jr.

Cocaine Bear is exactly what you want, need, and expect it to be. Director Elizabeth Banks assembled a cast willing to just go for it, and together they’ve delivered one of the funniest, most insane R-rated horror / comedy / thriller / crime caper / buddy comedy / cautionary tale / coming-of-age films in history. Of course, it helps that there are very few, if any, films that have dipped their toes into that many genres all at once and been successful while doing so.
Cocaine Bear’s very loosely inspired by a true story. Fact: In 1985, a 175-pound black bear, now lovingly referred to as Pablo Escobear, did ingest cocaine that had fallen from a plane. Fact: The bricks of cocaine tumbled into the bear’s path after drug smuggler Andrew Thornton (played by The Americans’ Matthew Rhys in a brief but memorable cameo) tossed them from a plane and then followed them out.

Plot: A black bear discovers a duffle bag of cocaine and has one hell of a party.
Review: Cocaine Bear is one heck of a good time at the movies. Running a lean and mean ninety-five minutes, it takes full advantage of its wacky premise. It delivers a ton of R-rated carnage and silliness without overstaying its welcome. Inspired by a legit thing that happened in the eighties, where a plane full of cocaine crashed, and a duffel bag of cocaine was consumed by a black bear who found it in the forest, the film uses this wacky true crime tidbit to craft a fun crime caper/horror movie mash-up. It’s a solid directorial vehicle for Elizabeth Banks, who gives the film the edge and energy it needs, making it a uniquely entertaining studio flick for adults.

The title says it all. Just like Snakes on a Plane was about just that, the new horror comedy Cocaine Bear is about a 500-pound bear on a jihad after coming upon a ton of cocaine dropped into rural Georgia on a drug run gone wrong. The bear ingests the coke, and soon you have a beast roaring out of control and devouring whatever human comes onto his path. It is all not to be taken seriously, but fortunately director Elizabeth Banks is smart enough to give audiences hungry for a Jaws in the wilderness some nice scares mixed in with the laughs plus a bit more bang for their buck than just a marketable title.

Universal Pictures is giving director Elizabeth Banks’ “character-driven thriller” Cocaine Bear a theatrical release tomorrow, February 24th (you can read some early reactions Here), and some movie-goers are already hoping for a follow-up that would be called Cocaine Shark. It remains to be seen is there’s going to be a sequel at all, let alone one that would go aquatic, but during a conversation with Variety screenwriter Jimmy Warden (who happens to be married to genre icon Samara Weaving) confirmed that he has ideas for multiple sequels.
When asked if he has a sequel in mind, Warden replied, “Yeah, for sure. Not just a sequel. Many sequels. Cocaine Bear in Space is where we would probably end.“
When the interviewer said they couldn’t tell if he was kidding or not, Warden continued: “No, I’m f*cking with you about Cocaine Bear Goes to Space. But for the sequels,...

Now your high scores can be extra high with the new Cocaine Bear video game, an 8-bit bender inspired by Pacman and the titular ursine hero.

Elizabeth Banks’ crazy upcoming film Cocaine Bear may be the start of a glorious cinematic universe. Thanks to a recent police discovery off the coast of New Zealand, Banks has confirmed interest in making a Cocaine Shark movie.
Earlier this week, police down under discovered more than three tons of cocaine floating in the Pacific Ocean as part of a drug-smuggling scheme. Naturally, the internet immediately began joking about sea animals discovering the drugs, since Cocaine Bear was inspired by a real black bear that got its paws on a bag of coke in a Georgia forest in 1985.
Banks herself heard the story, and she told People it could lend itself to something of a Cocaine Shark. “If there’s a great story, then sure,” the director said. “Jaws with cocaine, I don’t see how that loses.”

Perhaps humbly anticipating a slightly less prestigious premiere than in competition at Sundance, Randall Park’s “Shortcomings” opens with an amusingly broad parody of “Crazy Rich Asians” (starring original cast member Ronnie Chieng alongside Stephanie Hsu) playing at a Berkeley-based Asian American film festival. As the credits roll, the audience hoot and holler their approval — all except for struggling Japanese American filmmaker Ben (Justin H. Min), who wears the pained expression of a man passing a kidney stone. In the lobby with his girlfriend, Miko (Ally Maki), who works for the festival, Ben is asked what he thinks by the ebullient director of the film. Struggling for a diplomacy that we soon learn does not come naturally, Ben leads with “It’s … quite the event.”
“Shortcomings,” in its way, is also quite the event. A fresh-faced, funny directorial debut from the ever-engaging Park, who starred in “Fresh off the Boat” and “Always Be My Maybe,...

The trailer for Cocaine Bear has been released – and there’s a good chance it’ll be 2024’s wildest movie.
Announced in April, Cocaine Bear has prompted raised eyebrows due to its incredible premise that is, in fact, inspired by real-life events.
In September 1985, a 175lb black bear in north Georgia ingested a duffel bag of cocaine that convicted drug smuggler Andrew Thornton had abandoned.
The horror-comedy, which is directed by Pitch Perfect star Elizabeth Banks, sees the drug-fuelled animal then embark on a murderous rampage, which was not part of the true story.
In real life, the bear ingested the cocaine and subsequently overdosed. It was found three months later next to approximately 40 plastic containers of cocaine.
The first trailer for the film arrived on Thursday (1 December), prompting a number of reactions from fans – many of whom posted memes in response to the clip.

They got some idea today when Universal dropped the bonkers first trailer for the film “inspired by the true story of a drug runner’s 1985 plane crash, missing cocaine, and the black bear that ate it.” The movie, billed as a character-driven thriller, seems to have a good bit of fun with the premise.
The story involves an oddball group of cops, criminals, tourists and teens converging in a Georgia forest where a 500-pound apex predator has ingested a staggering amount of cocaine and gone on a rampage for more blow…and blood.
In the course of things, the bear gulps down bricks of blow which seem to confer upon it drug-fueled superpowers. The beast gallops up a tree after one victim.

Elizabeth Banks' Cocaine Bear Has A Scene That's 'Mini Fast & Furious But One Of The Cars Is A Bear'
This post contains spoilers for a scene from the upcoming film "Cocaine Bear."
Like a drug-addled black bear, the first preview of Elizabeth Banks' "Cocaine Bear" has just been unleashed on the unsuspecting public, and the movie frankly looks like a wild ride. The red-band trailer for the Lord and Miller-produced film emphasizes the comedy angle of the story about a Kentucky black bear that accidentally ate hundreds of pounds of cocaine in the 1980s, but it also hints at the ferociousness of the titular character. The true story that inspired the movie isn't nearly as eventful as the version Banks and writer Jimmy Warden created, which is set to re-imagine the bear's misadventure as a coke-fueled killing spree.
/Film attended a premiere screening event for the film's trailer earlier this week, where Banks also shared a sneak peek at a full scene from the film. "When I read this sequence in the script,...

The official trailer is here for Elizabeth Banks’ latest directorial effort, the upcoming thriller “Cocaine Bear” from Universal Pictures, which is inspired by a true story. As the title suggests, the film follows a black bear that embarks on a murderous rampage following its unintentional consumption of cocaine.
The film stars Keri Russell, Margo Martindale, Ray Liotta, Alden Ehrenreich, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Kristofer Hivju, Kahyun Kim, Christian Convery, Brooklynn Prince and newcomer Scott Seiss. This film marks one of Liotta’s final acting roles and the first to be released following the actor’s death in May at the age of 67.
While the murderous rampage was not part of the true story that “Cocaine Bear” is based on, the actual chain of events took place in September 1985 when a convicted drug smuggler named Andrew Thornton offloaded a duffel bag of cocaine over northern Georgia. A 175-pound black...

Universal Pictures will be giving director Elizabeth Banks’ “character-driven thriller” Cocaine Bear a theatrical release on February 24, 2023, and today the studio has unveiled a poster for the film. A poster that features the titular cocaine bear itself! You can check it out at the bottom of this article.
Cocaine Bear is based on true events that took place in Kentucky in 1985. As our own Kevin Fraser reported last year, the true story goes like this: “In 1985, convicted drug smuggler Andrew Thornton was on a smuggling run from Columbia and had dumped several packages full of cocaine before bailing from the plane himself. Unfortunately, he hit his head on the tail of the aircraft and wound up in a freefall to the ground where he was found dead in someone’s driveway. Several months later, a 175-pound black bear was found dead after devouring approximately 15 million worth of cocaine that had been dropped by Thornton.
