Forty years ago, author William Gibson brought the world a cyberpunk novel called Neuromancer – and an adaptation of that story has been trudging its way through development hell pretty much ever since. Versions of a feature film adaptation have passed through the hands of director like music video maker Chris Cunningham, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and The Blob‘s Chuck Russell, Torque‘s Joseph Kahn, Cube‘s Vincenzo Natali, and Deadpool‘s Tim Miller. While these projects were being put together (and while they fell apart), Neuromancer fans always wondered who would end up playing the lead character, Henry Dorsett Case. Hayden Christensen was rumored to be the top contender when Kahn was going to direct (with Liv Tyler rumored to co-star). Liam Neeson and Mark Wahlberg were said to be in the running for Natali’s version, although it wasn’t said who they might be playing.

Joseph Kahn primarily works as a music video director, having collaborated with the likes of Taylor Swift, Backstreet Boys, Rob Zombie, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, U2, Aerosmith, Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson, Eminem, Maroon 5, Shakira, and many more – but he has also made a few feature films over the years. He made his feature debut with the 2004 action comedy Torque, and has followed that up with the comedy Bodied and the horror film Detention – which we’ve covered for both Awfully Good and Best Horror Movie You Never Saw. Now, Variety reports that Kahn is making a creature feature called Ick, and Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) and Mena Suvari (American Beauty) have signed on to star in the film.
Ick is coming our way from Interstellar Entertainment and producer Steven Schneider. The film aims to “evoke the timeless creature features of the 1980s with an ambitious arsenal of scares and comedy.

Variety’s report notes, “The film aims to evoke the timeless creature features of the 1980s with an ambitious arsenal of scares and comedy.”

In life, spewing hate comes easy; finding the good takes effort. That’s my mantra for “Revenge of the Remakes.” Get dirty and identify value where others hastily — maybe unfairly — laid harsh criticisms. Any remake, in any genre, faces biased outrage from peanut galleries who refuse to remove their nostalgia goggles. It’s easy to prey on the hate clickers out there, which is why I use this column as a voice for the misunderstood and wrongly delegitimized. A remake isn’t trash because it’s a remake, there’s more to the equation.
That said (and believed), not all remakes are created equal. With soaring highs come subterranean lows. Sometimes remakes are nothing but a copy-and-paste cash grab, devoid of creative ambitions. These examples fuel smear campaigns about remakes at large — and today, we’re dissecting one of the worst.

If you don't know the name Grant Singer, chances are you're familiar with his work as a music video and commercial director. Singer has been behind some of the most visually striking videos of the past few years and has worked with artists such as The Weeknd, Sky Ferreira, Lorde, Taylor Swift, Sam Smith, Ariana Grande, Ariel Pink, and Skrillex. Now, Singer is following in the footsteps of filmmakers like Michael Bay, David Fincher, Gus Van Sant, McG, Joseph Kahn, Daniels, and Spike Jonze by delivering his first narrative feature. With a star-studded cast and a compelling story, Singer's new Netflix thriller looks and sounds like a refreshing addition to the streaming juggernaut's library of original projects. Check out the film's official synopsis below:

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at Sugar Ray's Caboose, directed by McG. Joseph McGinty, who chose McG as his nom de plume, is the epitome of the nineties, as a music video director. When you think of the style of 90's adverts and music videos, with their Xtreme edge, their pop-art pops of color, their fishbowl lens effects and their oversaturated lighting, let alone the many bikini clad women, baggy pants and spiky haircuts, you are thinking of a McG music video. Together with Joseph Kahn, Dave Meyers and Hype Williams, McG set the style for the era. Smash Mouth's All Star? That's McG. The Offspring's Pretty Fly For...

Let's get something out of the way first. "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always" is not where you want to start as a newcomer to the "Power Rangers" franchise. It is also not a wildly different reimagining of the '90s juggernaut — so don't expect a gritty reboot like the Joseph Kahn and Adi Shankar short film. Instead, what this offers is a nostalgia-filled special that is not particularly different from the many, many, many other anniversary crossover specials the franchise has done over the years.
What does make "Once & Always" different and notable is that it is entirely focused on the original "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" iteration rather than trying to tie in the past with the future. And even if this is still as cheesy as the original '90s show, it does have some edge to it that makes it stand out — plus a loving tribute to fallen Rangers.

Not content with just dominating radio and the Billboard charts during the holidays, Mariah Carey has set her sights on conquering the airwaves. The five-time Grammy winner will star in a new holiday concert special coming to CBS and Paramount+ on December 20. Nicki Minaj just released the new video for "Super Freaky Girl." Directed by Joseph Kahn, it features Minaj getting flirty at home with "Vikings" actor and "The Hunger Games" alum Alexander Ludwig and walking past Barbie doll neighbors before burning her house down in pink flames.
"Super Freaky Girl" marked Minaj's first solo release in three years. The track, which dropped on Aug. 12, uses a sample of Rick James's "Super Freak" to pay homage to the 1981 hit. "He want a F-r-e-a-k (freaky girl) / F-r-e-a-K (freaky girl)," Minaj raps in the hook.

Josh Hutcherson is my favorite kind of movie star. While most of the world knows him for his starring role as Peeta Mellark in "The Hunger Games" franchise, he also lends his talents to weird and adventurous genre films like Joseph Kahn's criminally underrated "Detention," and the ridiculously fun "Tragedy Girls." The short king was put through the wringer on the "Hunger Games" set, having to perform in a role that was as emotional as it was physical. In case you somehow managed to escape one of the biggest film franchises of the 2010s, "The Hunger Games" was a four-part film series based on Suzanne Collins'...

Joseph Kahn‘s Detention deserves its own club when we talk about underappreciated, before-their-time strokes of brilliance. I'm resigned to the fact that I live in a world where a new superhero movie comes out every four months, but we'll never get an adaptation of William Gibson's seminal cyberpunk masterpiece Neuromancer. It's shitty, but it is what it is.
First Joseph Kahn tried and struck out and then Vincenzo Natali got pretty close but the project died as expected.
Now I'm supposed to believe Deadpool director Tim Miller is going to make it happen? After his recent Terminator movie flopped as badly as it did? Forgive me if I don't hold my breath.

“Bad Boys for Life” directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah have been tapped to helm DC’s upcoming “Batgirl” movie at Warner Bros.
Christina Hodson penned the script for the new superhero film, centered on Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham City police commissioner James Gordon. Hodson, who wrote the screenplays for “Bumblebee” and “Birds of Prey,” also penned the script for DC’s upcoming “Flash” movie.
The “Batgirl” pic is being planned for HBO Max and is produced by Kristin Burr. The character, famously played by the late Yvonne Craig, was initially introduced as part of the “Batman” TV series in 1967. Batgirl’s last big-screen appearance was in 1997’s “Batman & Robin,” with Alicia Silverstone taking on the role.
El Arbi and Fallah most recently directed the third installment of the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence-starring franchise to a box office-busting $426 million in worldwide ticket sales.

DJ Khaled, Lil Baby and Lil Durk dropped their hard-hitting “Every Chance I Get” video. The track appears on DJ Khaled’s 12th album, Khaled Khaled, which was released last Friday.
In the Joseph Kahn-directed visual, the rappers perform flanked by a fiery cityscape set at night, where sparks fly, luxury cars burn and women dance. Lil Baby opens with his two verses and also holds down the hook.

Gerard Butler made his screen debut in 1997 period drama Mrs. Brown, but it wasn’t until the success of Zack Snyder’s 300 a decade later that he finally found his niche in Hollywood at the complete opposite end of the genre spectrum. The heavily stylized comic book adaptation remains the biggest live-action box office hit of his career, but over the last thirteen years he’s carved out a reputation as a solid and dependable presence in the realms of the mid budget action thriller.
For the most part, when you see Butler’s name attached to a movie, you know exactly what you’re going to get. While there’s been some notable duds along the way such as Gods of Egypt, Geostorm and Hunter Killer, the 51 year-old can typically be relied on to deliver a gruffly charismatic performance in solidly enjoyable actioners that tend to do decent business at the box office.

Katee Sackhoff has built up something of a reputation for playing no-nonsense characters in the sci-fi genre. The actress scored her big break portraying Kara Thrace in the 2003 Battlestar Galactica miniseries, which proved so popular that it launched a full-blown revival that ran for four seasons, and over the course of those 76 episodes, it gained a well earned reputation as one of the finest TV shows of the modern era.
Sticking with sci-fi, Sackhoff has since gone on to lend support in Vin Diesel’s Riddick, play the Pink Ranger in Joseph Kahn’s stylish and gritty fan film Power/Rangers, headline low budget intergalactic adventure 2036 Origin Unknown and take top billing in Netflix’s existential and extraterrestrial drama Another Life, which was renewed last year for a second season.

Coming into his new role as one of the principals on “The Voice,” Nick Jonas has recently been spending his time as one of three voices, having successfully reunited with his brothers last year. Over the last two years, there has been no shortage of hot takes surrounding Rian Johnson’s film “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.” Everyone seems to have an opinion, and most of those feelings tend to be very passionate, one way or another.
But over this time, the fans have been the most vocal, while the folks in Hollywood have been pretty reserved. Well, it appears that we’re entering the final phase of ‘Last Jedi’ critiques, where everyone, including actors and filmmakers involved, as well as outside Hollywood folks, feels the need to express their opinions before ‘Rise of Skywalker’ is released.

Exclusive: Deadline has learned that ICM Motion Picture Co-Head & Partner Spencer Baumgarten is exiting the agency after three years.
There are no plans to immediately fill the vacancy, as Baumgarten was one of three co-heads of the Motion Picture Lit division, a department which Harley Copen and Doug MacLaren continue to lead. There’s no word yet on where Baumgarten will land. He has been at ICM since November 2016.
Prior to ICM, Baumgarten was at CAA for 12 years where he repped such clients as Jon Favreau, Neil Burger and Gore Verbinski. At ICM, Baumgarten was involved with the teams for such clients as John Woo, Robert Orci, actress Jingchu Zhang, and filmmaker Joseph Kahn, among others.
The following memo was sent to ICM staffers on Wednesday about Baumgarten’s departure:
Dear Colleagues,
Spencer Baumgarten is no longer with the agency. We thank him for the contributions he made and wish him the best going forward.

New to Streaming: ‘Between Two Ferns: The Movie,’ ‘Pather Panchali,’ ‘Wild Rose,’ ‘Aniara,’ and More
With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options—not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves–each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit platforms. Check out this week’s selections below and an archive of past round-ups here.
Aniara (Pella Kågerman & Hugo Lilja)
The title shares its name with a city-size spacecraft ferrying humans from Earth to Mars in barely three weeks. It’s a routine trip that’s never run into problems with many passengers already having family on the red planet to greet them upon arrival. But there’s a first time for everything as a small field of debris forces Captain Chefone (Arvin Kananian) off course. Unfortunately a screw breaches their hull anyway, pushing their nuclear fuel supply to critical mass. Expelling it may save them for the moment, but without it they cannot steer. So despite having enough self-sustaining electricity...

For its centerpiece commercial in the build-up to the 2019 Women’s World Cup, which kicks off June 7, Fox Sports knew it had to shoot to score.
The spot, titled “All Eyes On Us,” poses the question which soccer fans around the world will be asking: can anybody challenge the U.S. team, the undisputed queens of the international women’s soccer stage?
“Take your best shot. Just remember, you come at the queen, you best not miss,” says actress Carrie Coon, who narrates the spot.
The result is a fast, furious, immersive commercial. Robert Gottlieb, executive vice president and head of marketing at Fox Sports, says that also describes what it was like to shoot.
“Becky Sauerbrunn, who at the end of the commercial tackles the French player and goes flying, did take after take of that tackle. Don’t tell the coach of this, she’d lose her mind,...

In a decade of countless record-breaking hits in the genre, one superhero movie stands out for its total failure. 2015’s Fantastic Four was Fox’s third attempt to bring Marvel’s First Family to the screen and at first we thought they were onto something with director Josh Trank’s darker take on the team. However, the end result was an ugly, studio-mangled mess. Fans aren’t alone in hating it, though, as it seems Trank himself agrees.
In response to Captain Marvel‘s historic opening weekend, following speculation that it might flop, music video director Joseph Kahn argued that “no superhero movie fails.” Trank then saw an opportunity to prove him wrong. “Hold my beer,” the filmmaker succinctly tweeted, going viral in the process.

“Words are weapons in the world’s most brutal lyrical sport.” That’s from the promo description of Bodied, the first ever fiction feature film about battle rap. The surely common question, “What the hell is battle rap?” gets a bracing answer within minutes of the film’s opening. The “lyrical sport” consists of two (or sometimes teams of two) rappers, with no music to back them, competing against each other to see who can be more virtuosic with their threats and/or insults.Helmed by music video director Joseph Kahn, Bodied is a wild, jacked-up trip—disjunctive but somehow graceful. Kahn and his team jump across space, use slow- and fast-motion, push in on characters and switch perspectives with a mixture of finesse and aggression that’s entirely fitting for the story material. So much rap—and especially this kind of it—is about refined style applied to unrefined material,...

So far this fall’s specialized box office is performing better than last year. The string of strong openings continues with another initial limited release: Joel Edgerton’s “Boy Erased” (Focus Features) showed significant initial interest in its first three cities. The thoughtful gay conversion drama is the latest of several above-average openings drawing a diverse range of independent audiences. And it comes when several of the top wide releases also are competing for the same moviegoers.
“A Private War” (Aviron) and “Maria By Callas” (Sony Pictures Classics) also pulled decent initial reactions. The real mark of success is what happens as films expand, so it remains to be seen how these will translate ahead.
For example, last week’s strong two-theater opener “Suspiria” (Amazon) went to several hundred locations with mixed results, including a steep second-day fall. On the other hand, four initially limited films — “The Hate U Give...
