Most true crime dramas retell stories from long enough ago that many viewers weren’t alive to hear about them the first time around, from David Tennant’s portrayal of 1980s serial killer Dennis Nilsen in Des to The Serpent, the BBC drama about 1970s murderer Charles Sobhraj. But ITV’s latest example, The Hunt for Raoul Moat, depicts a violent crime so recent that we don’t just remember hearing about it, we remember tweeting about it.
In 2010, Raoul Moat shot three people in Northumberland: his ex-girlfriend, Samantha Stobbart, was seriously injured, her partner Chris Brown died, and police officer David Rathband was blinded and later took his own life. A six-day manhunt gripped the nation, culminating in a police stand-off at a riverbank, where Moat shot himself. Dramatising such a recent tragedy has attracted criticism – including from the families of Stobbart and Rathband – and led many to wonder:...

Tributes are pouring in for Bill Turnbull after it was announced that the veteran broadcaster had died from prostate cancer on Wednesday (31 August).
The former BBC Breakfast presenter’s family confirmed on Thursday (1 September) that Turnbull had “passed away peacefully at his home” after being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2017.
Piers Morgan honoured Turnbull as “one of the best broadcasters in Britain” in a tribute posted on Twitter.
His tweet read: “Rip Bill Turnbull, 66. One of the best broadcasters in Britain, and such a smart, funny, warm & generous-spirited man.
“Fought his illness with typical stoicism, courage and humour. Bill made presenting live TV look so effortless, which was his great talent. Such sad news.”
Turnbull was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2017, and had taken a leave of absence from his radio show Classic FM to focus on his health in October last year. However, he returned to the show last month.

When 2021 began, many movie lovers were hopeful April would be the month of the rebound. James Bond was scheduled to (finally) return at the beginning of the month, and Marvel’s Black Widow was waiting at just the end of it. This of course did not happen.
Nevertheless, for those looking for more bite-sized distractions over the usual binging blur on streaming services, there is still relief coming on Netflix. While all of the below movies are relatively recent, chances are you haven’t seen any of them in a long time, if at all. So sit back, relax, and find out the best options to Netflix and chill this April.
Insidious (2011)
April 1
As the movie that arguably ushered in the horror movie renaissance of the 2010s—or at least cemented the Blumhouse Productions formula—Insidious has become strangely overlooked. This is probably due to director James Wan and star...

There’s nothing like kicking back on the couch and enjoying some hearty laughs, and few comedy actors are capable of being hilarious to both children and adults quite as well as Jim Carrey. Thankfully, if you’re a Netflix subscriber, you have access to some of his best work, including the 90s classic Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, tragicomedy Fun with Dick and Jane, and kid-friendly holiday flick How the Grinch Stole Christmas, among others. But next month you’ll be able to check out another one of the comedian’s funniest films, and it’s one that you’re definitely going to want to say yes to seeing.
Yes Man drops on Netflix on November 1st and in it, Carrey plays Carl Allen, a man who feels at the mercy of life and phones in every day. When he’s convinced to attend a self-help seminar, though, he learns...

A few words on how thoughtless or unkind remarks can stick around a lot longer than might be expected...
Welcome to Geeks Vs Loneliness, our weekly slot where we try and natter about things that may be affecting some of us. Not every article applies to every person, and nobody has a magic wand. But hopefully, in the 50 or so pieces we’ve done so far, there’s been something of use to you.
Most of the articles that we’ve penned as part of our Geeks Vs Loneliness series have primarily been intended to offer positive advice, or at least to open up topics of discussion that otherwise are tricky to bring up.
I’ve ummed and ahhhed about the article that’s going to follow for a little bit though, as it’s a little more negative than I’d usually like. However, I also...

BBC Three put Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding’s wilfully shambolic live act and radio series, The Mighty Boosh, on TV…
Part of The Mighty Boosh’s delight comes from its unlikelihood as a TV sitcom. Its boundless Day-Glo imagination isn’t an immediate fit with the constraints of the form. A sunshine simpleton and his awkward, jazz-obsessed colleague meet mythic monsters and talking animals while performing expertly observed musical parody? It’s not exactly My Family.
As comedian, writer, and director of Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding’s 1999 Edinburgh show Arctic Boosh, Stewart Lee, put it, “No television exec would ever have gone ‘What we need is a kind of purple head with tentacles coming out of it which speaks like a member of the Small Faces’”.

Get ready for Stephen Falk's universe of narcissists to expand: The You're the Worst showrunner is now developing two more series for FX as part of an overall deal he signed with the network when it renewed Ytw for a third season last week, and he's bringing three of that show's writers along for the ride. One's an untitled semi-autobiographical comedy from Alison Bennett about "an unrelentingly dissatisfied TV writer who returns to her hometown in rural Pennsylvania to live the 'simple life,'" a.k.a. unemployment. Ytw writers Franklin Hardy and Shane Kosakowski are teaming up for Join Me, a comedy based on British writer Danny Wallace's 2003 novel of the same name about unintentionally founding a movement dedicated to random acts of kindness. (In other words, it'll be a spinoff about Edgar's fairy-tale ending.) Falk is set to executive-produce both shows and co-write Bennett's.

As much as I love indie games, it’s been getting harder and harder to keep the flame alive. For a while there, most indies getting released were a variation of two formulas: obtuse puzzlers or dark narratives featuring young/naive protagonists. The glut of obnoxious puzzlers left me wanting something different, which I eventually found in Thomas Was Alone, the debut title from Mike Bithell. Sure, it was a quirky platformer, but it told a fascinating story and featured gorgeous narration from Danny Wallace. Enter Volume, a quirky stealth title from Bithell that tells a vaguely interesting story and once again sports beautiful narration from Wallace.
Marking only his second foray into the gaming world, Bithell has shown that he clearly understands how to make a fun and appealing title. Volume is a step forward in many ways for the developer, working to avoid the pratfalls that pull most artsy-fartsy indie titles down,...

Film, TV and games companies have big plans for legendary tights-wearer Robin Hood. Here’s our primer on all the new versions…
Note: we've taken images from old Robin Hood projects because these new films and things, um, don't exist yet. Maximum geek points to whoever can remember what they're all from.
You don’t need us to remind you, but these days Hollywood and TV executives seem to have one target in mind – big franchises, hopefully with spin-offs and tie-ins galore across all possible forms of media.
An interesting consequence of all this is that the entertainment industry has begun looking beyond capes and cowls in their ‘what can we make a franchise out of?’ discussions. ‘What about other sorts of legendary characters?’ you can imagine them asking, before a big eureka moment… ‘What about Robin bloody Hood?!’
Almost simultaneously, it seems like every studio in Hollywood has latched...

From Thomas Was Alone creator Mike Bithell comes the neon-drenched sneak-em-up, Volume. Here's a new trailer...
With little more than a handful of brightly-coloured rectangles - and a charming narration by Danny Wallace - Thomas Was Alone emerged as one of the most captivating and absorbing puzzle games of recent years. First appearing as a Flash game way back in 2010, it was overhauled in 2012 and subsequently became an indie hit. If you haven't played Thomas Was Alone yet for some reason, we'd urge you to give it a try.
The developer behind Thomas Was Alone, Mike Bithell, is tackling something rather different for his next game. It's like a cross between Metal Gear Solid and Tron, in that it's a stealth game set in a distinctive-looking virtual world of geometric shapes and intense colours.
A reworking of the Robin Hood legend, Volume sees you sneak into secure areas to steal information.

Thomas Was Alone developer Mike Bithell has revealed a new trailer for his upcoming stealth-based title Volume, which features Andy Serkis for the very first time as the villainous Guy Gisborne.
Described as the overarching antagonist — a malevolent CEO who just so happens to control England — the voice and motion capture specialist can be heard at the tail end of the video. As for the rest of the footage, Bithell places a big emphasis on the game’s main enemy types, namely the Pawn, the Turret, the Knight, the Rogue, the Hound and the Archer. If you haven’t already guessed, Volume is shaping up to be a modern retelling of the Robin Hood legend. In this instance, Rob Locksley is played by YouTuber Charlie McDonnell with the primary goal set as “Steal. Create. Be heard.”

Eleven games into the season and a glance at the Premier League table shows the unsurprising likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Man United in the top five. In the midst of them all, though, are third placed Southampton. After this many games last season Saints were just one place off the bottom, with only one win and just 5 points. “Honestly, I didn’t think I would ever win,” Rashed said. “Especially this year, because I follow this competition as a filmmakers very closely every year, and this year in particular there were some really great finalists.

Comic hints that a high-profile hunger strike might be on the cards. And if that wasn't confusing enough, Sunday is now a day of atheism and Jo Brand a product of patriarchy
This week's comedy news
Is Frankie Boyle about to go on hunger strike? As reported by the Guardian last week, the human rights lawyer Clive Stafford Smith is currently hunger-striking in solidarity with his client Shaker Aamer, who is imprisoned at Guantánamo Bay and has been striking for 150 days. In an interview last Thursday on Radio Scotland, and again the following day on this website, Stafford Smith claimed the standup and ex-Mock the Week star is lined up to "take over from me when I fail" – ie starve himself to raise awareness of the plight of inmates at Guantánamo. The move would represent a strong break with Boyle's cynical public image, but all his management will say...

You know him from the likes of Spaced and Shaun Of The Dead. Or science goof Look Around You, or his many hilarious impressions. Or even as the comic gold mine that is Brian Butterfield. But Peter Serafinowicz has also been building a reputation as a director, working on music videos for bands such as Hot Chip. He’s now branching out on to the big screen with his film-directing debut, I See What You Did There.Twitch brings word that Serafinowicz has co-written the script with Yes Man’s Danny Wallace, and it’s apparently a dark comedy. I See What You Did There finds a comedian going ballistic and killing a particularly annoying heckler, only to discover that his biggest fan has witnessed the crime. Definite shades of The King Of Comedy, Misery, and even I Know What You Did Last Summer. With the writing team now hard...

Though you might not know Peter Serafinowicz by name, you've certainly seen his work. The British comedian has appeared in films like Shaun of the Dead as Shaun and Ed's annoyed roommate Pete, not to mention Edgar Wright's earlier work with the TV series "Spaced." In addition, Serafinowicz provided the dubbed voice for Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, though he was played on screen by stuntman Ray Park. Now Twitch reports the actor is poised to get behind the camera with a new dark comedy called I See What You Did There, which is described as The King of Comedy meets Misery. That sounds like a weird combination, but since the story follows a comedian who kills a heckler with the only witness being the funny man's number one fan, that's an apt description. Right now Serafinowicz is finalizing the script with his...

Carrey has distanced himself from Kick-Ass 2 on Twitter. Which other actors have put the boot into one of their own projects?
Kick-Ass 2 should have resurrected Jim Carrey's career. It promised to be the antidote to Carrey's current professional malaise. The public have grown sick of watching him dance with cartoon penguins or conduct wildly age-inappropriate relationships while acting as a weird cinematic representation of Danny Wallace, and he knows it. So signing up for a minor yet indelible role in an edgy ensemble such as Kick-Ass 2 seemed like a masterstroke.
But, now that Carrey has gone out of his way to distance himself from the film on Twitter, who knows what'll happen? However, Carrey is by no means the first actor to besmirch his own projects. Here are some other notable instances.
I did Kickass a month b4 Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience...

It was only Sunday night that I was out standing in the snow and rain at BAFTAs. Just when I thought I had gotten over the show, the video game BAFTAs have crept up on me and released their nominations on me.
Across 17 catagories, Journey has been nominated for 8. As with all the awards this year, The Walking Dead is right on its heels as it looks like the two games are set to slug it out one last time on March 5th.
In one of the most interesting nominations of the year, Far Cry 3 has been nominated for Best Story. This is going to get some stick from some, but not from me. I have been championing that games story and intent since I completed the game. Clearly a few of us Brits had our thinking caps on as we played through the game.

Want to know what games the Independent Games Festival picked as their nominees in their top categories this year?
Hit the jump to see what categories "Hundreds," "Hotline Miami," and more got nominated for.
I haven't been able to pick out a particular pattern among this year's Igf nominees in terms of genre or game type--it's a pretty open and diverse field. I will say many of the entries here make me consider heading over to Steam, iTunes, and other handy download services today to catch up on a bunch of under-the-radar titles from 2012 that I missed.
Here's the final list of nominees:
Excellence In Visual Art
Incredipede (Northway Games and Thomas Shahan)
Kentucky Route Zero (Cardboard Computer)
Guacalamelee! (Drinkbox Studios)
Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime (Asteroid Base)
Year Walk (Simogo)
Honorable mentions: Fly'n (Ankama Play); Eleven (Christoffer Hedborg, Datahowler); The Bridge (Ty Taylor and Mario Castaneda); Thomas Was Alone (Mike Bithell,...

Jon Holmes has insisted he will only play music that he likes on the brand new Xfm Breakfast Show. The comedian and broadcaster, who started hosting the coveted slot today, explained that he is looking forward to playing songs that he enjoys. Holmes exclusively told Digital Spy: "The reason I'm excited to start at Xfm is that they aren't afraid of their own shadow. It's okay to stir things up a bit. "The best bit is that I can play exactly the music I like, so I won't have to play Michael Kiwanuka just because the BBC told me to and pretend to enjoy it." Asked if he was nervous about taking over from previous host Danny Wallace, he admitted: "Of course, especially as I tend to make things up as I go along. How could I have said no to it though? The Breakfast Show is the stuff of legends.

Derren Brown has established himself as what has been called a ‘psychological illusionist’, but he is also one of the few performers left who has a sense of danger about him. His television specials have a genuine ‘how did he pull that off?’ factor. In recent years, his shows have begun to explore of getting people to re-examine themselves, such as the special ‘Hero at 30,000 Feet’ which got an ordinary man to be placed in a situation, where he thought he would be helping land a plane.
This time, Brown is opting to make a member of the public think that a familiar end of the world scenario has come about. The programme opens with a quote from the Greek philosopher Epictetus, “He is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he have not, but rejoices for those which he has”. Derren goes on to say...

Exclusive: ABC has added two more comedy projects to its roster — True Story from Jennifer Crittenden and Gaby Allan and Man And Boy from British writer Danny Wallace and director-producer Julie Anne Robinson. Both comedies are single-camera and produced by ABC Studios. True Story, described as a female take on Wonder Years, is based on Crittenden and Allan’s experience as girls growing up with single moms in the 1970s. It is a look at what happens when a freshly divorced and boundary-less mother moves herself and 2 daughters in with her party girl best friend in Laguna Beach, CA in the late 1970′s. Seinfeld and Everybody Loves Raymond alumna Crittenden and former Scrubs writer-producer Allan are writing-executive producing through their overall deal at ABC Studios. The duo is repped by UTA and attorney Michael Gendler. Man And Boy centers on an eccentric man who returns to his small town and...

When somebody asks you to suggest a game for them to play that will make them care about the characters, keep them engaged in the story and be the type of game they just cant put down, most of you probably think of games like the Mass Effect trilogy, Final Fantasy games, maybe even something like Spec Ops: The Line. Recently I have found that when asked that question I had a new and unexpected answer in the form of Thomas Was Alone. With nothing more than a series of monochromatic blocks to keep me company, I soon found myself immersed in one of most endearing games I have played in years.
The characters may just be rectangles and squares, but I found myself caring about the journey Thomas and his friends were going on more than any game in recent memory. I was recently able to sit down with...

Last night saw the great and the good of the games industry; notable public figures and Blue attend the Game British Academy Video Game Awards to celebrate what appears to have been a fine year for gaming. For years, the videogame community has been pushed aside, making way for the far "greater" social interests such as film and/or television. While we were forced to endure acceptance speech after acceptance speech - from individuals so consumed in their own worlds they had forgotten all about reality - we dreamt of bigger and better things...how things have changed.
The Videogame industry is now one of the most powerful - and profitable - in the world, with more and more companies eager to get in on the action. Conversely, this raise in popularity has seen many of these 'elitist' individuals come crawling back, like an infected arm to its unaffected owner. While the film companies and cinematic production team continue to reel off remake after remake, the videogame industry remains awash with originality, with new ideas as fruitful as they ever were.

When the Canadian lineup for the Toronto International Film Festival was announced two days ago one title jumped out in particular due to its surprising familiarity. The film was Jody Shapiro's documentary How To Start Your Own Country, the surprise being that it had the exact same title as a television series that aired on the BBC covering the same topic five years ago. To say I was surprised was a bit of an understatement and I wondered aloud how two such similar projects could release so closely together with the exact same name.
Well, that was before I'd had the chance to see the film and compare it directly to the BBC series, which I have now done. And other than the unfortunately shared title the two works are quite distinct. The BBC series was a very personality based show driven by Danny Wallace and his quest to...

A very serious question for How To Start Your Own Country director Jody Shapiro: Have you received a phone call from BBC copyright lawyers yet? Because if you haven't, there's a fighting chance you will. Why? Because they already made this, with the exact same concept and the exact same title as a six part mini-series in 2005 with Danny Wallace. Someone, somewhere, at some point, probably should have run your title through Google.
Here's the official Tiff write up for Shapiro's movie:
Jody Shapiro's ultra-sharp documentary How to Start Your Own Country examines micro-nations - tiny states seldom recognized by better-known, more conventionally established countries. Traversing the globe, Shapiro introduces us to several states you've almost certainly never heard of.
