Magnolia Pictures has acquired the U.S. rights to “There There,” the latest film from “Support the Girls” and “Results” filmmaker Andrew Bujalski, out of the Tribeca Film Festival.
“There There” is described as an “uneasy comedy” about a delirious mirror image of everyday life in a distinctly twisted and discordant world. The film stars Jason Schwartzman, Lili Taylor, Lennie James, Molly Gordon, Avi Nash, Annie La Ganga, Roy Nathanson and Jon Natchez.
Magnolia plans to release the film later this year.
“There There” is something of an experimental film in which eight different performers were each filmed in isolation but then brought together in the edit. The story involves characters negotiating trust with one another. Oddly enough, the actors in the film were never within 1,000 miles of each other, and each gave their performances not even within a week of one another.

Magnolia Pictures has acquired U.S. rights to “There There,” Andrew Bujalski’s ensemble comedy starring Jason Schwartzman and Lili Taylor.
The film had its world premiere at Tribeca. The deal re-teams Bujalski with Magnolia which previously distributed the director’s “Support the Girls” and “Results.”
“We’re jazzed to be distributing another terrific film from Andrew Bujalski,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. “‘There There’ is wonderful look at where a lot of us are today,” continued Bowles. Magnolia plans to release “There, There” later this year.
Bujalski said he couldn’t imagine a better partner than Magnolia to bring this “deeply off-kilter movie to the world.” “As distributors their savvy is extraordinary, but moreover, their level of commitment, both to filmmakers and their audiences, is unparalleled,” added the helmer, who also penned the film.

The Orchard has acquired the North American distribution rights to writer-director Brett Haley’s drama “The Hero.” The film premiered Saturday in the Sundance Film Festival’s U.S. Dramatic Competition section.
“The Hero” stars Sam Elliott as Lee Hayden, an iconic Western singer whose best performances are decades behind him. His daily routine of reliving the glory days with his “former-co-star-turned-dealer” Jeremy (Nick Offerman) is upended when he receives a cancer diagnosis. Krysten Ritter and Laura Prepon co-star.
Haley’s previous film “I’ll See You In My Dreams” entered last year’s Sundance very quietly before emerging as one of the most commercially successful films from the festival, taking in $7.5 million at the box office. “The Hero” is an actor’s showcase that’s been generating much more buzz, thanks in part to early word of mouth. Elliott’s late-career starring role could generate awards traction.

Andrew Bujalski’s Computer Chess turned out to be the feel good film of Sundance and that’s not because the early gamers are particularly charming, but rather, better things come in small packages. Following Funny Ha Ha (2002), Mutual Appreciation (2005) and Beeswax (2009), this 30-something filmmaker, who in some circles is known as the godfather of the Mumblecore movement didn’t waste much time between the ’13 Sundance Film Fest Alfred Sloan Feature Film Prize winning micro-feature and his fifth, more macro-type budgeted ensemble project. Guy Pearce toplines alongside Cobie Smulders, Kevin Corrigan, Giovanni Ribisi, Brooklyn Decker, Anthony Michael Hall, SXSW Special Jury Prize Best Actor winner Tishuan Scott (The Retrieval) and Boyhood‘s Zoe Graham. Filming began in mid-summer on Results, and we’re assuming correctly by the first glimpse (see pic above) we got in September that this will bow in Park City with the director’s habitual stopover at SXSW.

Team Fox Searchlight should be returning to the winner’s circle at the next edition of the Indie Spirits awards. After winning with Black Swan three years back, and losing out in the Best Feature category with Beasts of the Southern Wild and The Descendants, Fox Searchlight’s 12 Years a Slave leads all other films with seven nominations Best Feature, Director, Screenplay, Cinematography and three of the four acting categories. Alexander Payne’s Nebraska follows with six noms. Both Sundance (Fruitvale Station) and SXSW (Short Term 12) winners figure among the noms, but they weren’t as plentiful with only three noms a piece. Among our favorite titles for 2013 which were left off the scorecard, David Lowery’s Ain’t Them Bodies Saints and Andrew Dosunmu’s Mother of George Saints got no recognition, while Eliza Hittman’s It Felt Like Love would have got my vote for the Annual Someone To Watch Award.

Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave is in contention for seven Spirit Awards followed closely by Alexander Payne’s Nebraska on six as Film Independent top brass announced nominees on November 26.
McQueen earned a director nomination and will compete against Alexander Payne for Nebraska, Jc Chandor for All Is Lost, Jeff Nichols for Mud and Share Carruth for Upstream Color.
Not surprisingly given the strength and depth of this awards season, the categories are strong across the board.
Paolo Sorrentino’s The Great Beauty is among a mighty crop of international contenders that includes Abdellatif Kechiche’s Palme d’Or winner Blue Is The Warmest Colour, Sebastian Lelio’s Gloria, Thomas Vinterberg’s The Hunt and A Touch Of Sin from China’s Jia Zhang-Ke.

On the last night of the Sundance Film Festival, a special awards ceremony to honor the winners of special prizes and audience awards is held in Park City, just as filmmakers and judges alike are ready to crawl back under the rocks from whence they came for another year. It's the last opportunity to put on the Ritz, do some hardball networking and consummate that fling you've been gunning for all week.
These awards, unlike the ceremonies we watch on TV, are less about competition than camaraderie. As emcee Joseph Gordon-Levitt put it, "This is art. Not basketball." Even so, it never hurts to brand your emerging feature with more than just the Sundance official selection logo when negotiating with would-be buyers.
In the night's very first announcement, the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize went to the Austin-shot movie Computer Chess, from local filmmaker Andrew Bujalski. Producer Houston King,...

More to the point, do you look like a late-Seventies chess nerd? Or a computer nerd? You know who you are, and now the Computer Chess filmmakers want to know who you are, too.
You might recall we mentioned Andrew Bujalski's feature Computer Chess recently because it successfully ran a crowdsourced funding campaign, raising more than $50,000 for production costs. The movie is about computer chess programmers and takes place at a tournament in 1979.
Now production is underway here in Austin. Bujalski and producer Houston King have put out a call for extras, starting with scenes being shot this weekend, through September. Extras will be paid in "snacks, meals and good times" and of course you get to be in a locally shot movie, which is cool right there.
If you think you can pass for someone from 1979 who hangs out at chess tournaments (as in the photo on the...

NEW YORK -- New Magnolia Pictures genre labelMagnet has attracted North American rights to two action flicks, Ernesto Diaz Espinoza's Kiltro and Mirageman, both featuring martial arts lead Marko Zaror.
In Kiltro, Zaror plays a violent gangster out to avenge the killing of his mother. The film was a hit in writer/director Espinoza's native Chile. Mirageman showcases the acrobatic actor as a masked vigilante.
Kiltro has its stateside premiere this week at Austin's Fantastic Film Festival. Both features are slated for release in 2008.
Better known abroad than in the U.S., Zaror won the 2004 Stuntman of the Year award for his work as The Rock's stunt double in The Rundown. "At 6'2'', 210 pounds, it's magic to watch him move with such speed, power and style," said producer Derek Rundell.
The deal was negotiated by Magnet/Magnolia senior vp Tom Quinn and head of business affairs Jason Janego, with Rundell and his rep Houston King.
