Judith : A Halloween Tribute Short Film

15 November 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Ever wondered what the events in the life of Judith Myers were like leading up to her inevitable demise at the hands of her little brother, Michael? (I'm talking John Carpenter's original here, not Rob Zombie's re-"imagining") Well, filmmakers Josh Hasty and Kenny Caperton decided to tell that backstory in their new fan short Judith: A Halloween Tribute Film . Writer Caperton is no stranger to the Myers universe having built his North Carolina home into an exact replica of the Myers house from Carpenter's original film. Below you can check out the teaser trailer to director Josh Hasty's Judith , along with a pair of teaser posters and the synopsis. You can check out a slew of behind the scenes photos via the official Myers House website right here .... »

Focus Features: Putting A Bad Year Behind Them

13 November 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- With all the studio arm indie divisions closing shop, I'm crossing my fingers for the folks at Focus Features - they actually give a sh*t about filmmakers. We don't need to mention what happened with the parent company, and today's press release sort of camouflages the mediocre 2009 year that is still unfolding. When you add filmmaker Henry Selick and Shane Acker's numbers and subtract Ang Lee's and Sam Mendes' box office grosses and all the P&A costs, I'm sure that Focus' "eighth profitable year in a row since their inception" is based on the extra revenue from DVD/Blu-Ray sales and by no clear box office successes. With the half a dozen titles (mentioned below) in the 2010 pipeline, I'm thinking James Schamus' division might have a year with shades of green. Focus commenced the year with an indie film (Sin Nombre) that took in »

Afm Debuts First Photos and Synopses from 6 Upcoming Movies Including Manolete, Mona Lisa, Small Town Saturday Night and The Long Good Friday

12 November 2009 8:18 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

When it comes to the first photos and synopsis from upcoming films, Collider has reaped great rewards from this year’s American Film Market (Afm).  For those who don’t know, Afm is where film buyers from around the world come once a year to buy movies and also pre-buy films in development.  Simply put, this is where a lot of money changes hands in the film industry and it’s where many decisions about what you and I get to see are made.  In an effort to try and raise a film’s profile or attract film buyers, many of the studios distribute full synopses and still images for their movies.

With that in mind, we have grabbed some of those synopses and images for Manolete (starring Adrien Brody and Penelope Cruz), Mona Lisa, PearblossomSmall Town Saturday Night (starring Chris Pine), and The Long Good Friday.  Hit the »

In Theaters: Pirate Radio

12 November 2009 12:20 PM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

One of my favorite personal interview outtakes involves Rob Zombie casually mentioning, by way of illustrating his point that a good film crosses all boundaries, that he thinks Love Actually is a terrific movie. It's a testament to writer/director Richard Curtis's firm grasp on the romantic comedy genre (though Love was the first film he directed, he wrote Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, and Bridget Jones's Diary) that he was able to pilot it across that particular boundary; after years working in television on series like Black Adder and Mr. Bean, Curtis carved out a niche that was well-rewarded but also well-respected. With Pirate Radio (released several months ago in the UK as The Boat That Rocked) he leaves the sure footing of boy-meets-girl, modern London for a boat docked off the coast of England in 1966. The true story of the ships that sat just outside of UK waters, »

‘Buffy’ & ‘Mad Men’ Writer To Pen ‘Fright Night’ Remake

12 November 2009 10:49 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Back in March Screen Rant reported on yet another horror remake to be put into the works with Dreamworks’ Fright Night. At the time the producers had been put in place but no writer. Jump forward 8 months and a writer has been found in the form of Marti Noxon, who’s a regular writer on AMC’s classy Mad Men, as well as having worked on the hit vampire series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

The original Fright Night was written and directed by Tom Holland (Child’s Play, The Langoliers) back in 1985, and was about a teenager (William Ragsdale) who discovers his new next door neighbor (Chris Sarandon) is a vampire. However, he’s the only one who knows it, as no one will believe him.

I remember the original Fright Night pretty well, although I can’t seem to recall the comedy element from the “horror-comedy” label that’s »

The House of the Devil Review

11 November 2009 9:14 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Short Version: Ti West’s The House of the Devil is an agonizingly suspenseful and genuinely creepy homage to 1980s horror that hits nearly all the right notes.

Screen Rant’s Rob Frappier reviews The House of the Devil

Let’s see if this sounds familiar: An attractive and likable college co-ed takes a job as a babysitter at a creaky old house even though we know (and she senses) that something devious is afoot. If you’re thinking to yourself, “Been there, done that,” I’d ask you to continue reading anyway.

While Ti West’s The House of the Devil may sound familiar, the film’s potent mix of suspense, creepiness and gore is well worth the price of admission.

Though I’ve already outlined the plot somewhat, allow me to fill in a few more details. Samantha (played by newcomer Jocelin Donahue) needs some quick cash to »

Exclusive: A Talk with P.J. Soles

11 November 2009 12:30 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

With featured roles in Brian De Palma’s Carrie, John Carpenter’s Halloween, Allan Arkush's Rock 'n' Roll High School (featuring The Ramones), and Rob Zombie’s The Devil's Rejects, P.J. Soles has appeared in some of the most iconic cult/horror films of all time.

She's also an accomplished comedic actress, appearing in more mainstream fare such as Ivan Reitman's Stripes and Howard Zieff's Private Benjamin. (Okay, maybe Stripes and Private Benjamin aren't the genre movies Dread Central usually covers, but I think we remember them as well – especially P.J. displaying her comedy chops with Bill Murray).

Ms. Soles sat down with writer and horror fiend Heather Buckley for a lively interview about her acting career (which spans over 30 years, including television), her current musical endeavors, and one actor's insights into the differences between being directed by master of the macabre John Carpenter and suspense maestro Brian De Palma. »

Free Flick of The Day: Mayor of the Sunset Strip

5 November 2009 1:45 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Now that most of us acquire our music online these days, radio DJs don't have the same sway as taste-makers that they used to. But in the '70s, the final word in rock music was Rodney Bigenheimer. In George Hickenlooper's 2003 documentary about the infamous DJ and rock music icon, Mayor of Sunset Strip, we are shown Bigenheimer as an awkward and strange little fellow who, in the end, did it all for the music. Now, thanks to the nice folks at SlashControl you can now watch the documentary as one of their collection of (pretty awesome) free movies.

You wouldn't know it to look at him, but Bigenheimer was one of the biggest names in the rock music scene, and was credited with helping to break bands like The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Nirvana, and even Coldplay. Bigenheimer has been relegated to the 'graveyard shift' these days at Kroq, »

A 'Twilight' Actor As Sid Vicious, The World Series And Gwen Stefani In Today's Twitter-Wood

2 November 2009 4:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Halloween tweets were way more interesting this morning since everyone was posting actual photos instead of just being indecisive about what to wear. "Twilight" star Billy Burke took the crown for most authentic, though, with his Sid Vicious outfit. He pretty much nailed the Sex Pistols' late bassist.

"Toy Story 3" director, Lee Unkrich, meanwhile retweeted a few incoming photos he received of well crafted character costumes. Gwen Stefani stood out from the pack in that batch, doing Woody's gal pal Jessie from "Toy Story 2." Then there was Fred Durst, who appears to have put a leg up on December, posting a shot of the Christmas tree he just set up in his living room. Check out all of those, as well as reactions from the World Series, Rob Zombie and John Stamos. They're all waiting after the jump in the Twitter-Wood report for November 2, 2009.

Box-Office Top Five

#1 "Michael Jackson's This Is It" ($21.3 million)

#2 "Paranormal Activity" ($16.5 million)

#3 "Law Abiding Citizen" ($7.3 million)

#4 "Couples Retreat" ($6.1 million)

#5 "Saw VI" ($5.6 million)

The demons and ghouls of Halloween may have kept most prospective moviegoers away from theaters this weekend, but Michael Jackson loyalists came out in support of "Michael Jackson's This Is It," Sony's documentary of the deceased pop sensation's final rehearsals.

"This Is It" took the top spot at the box office this weekend with $21.3 million, bringing the documentary's total gross to $32.5 million since its opening last Wednesday. Despite claiming first place, "This Is It" failed to perform at the $30-$40 million level that Sony had initially hoped for, given the musician's massive fanbase and the »

Halloween Special Part 2: Michael Myers vs Me

1 November 2009 10:16 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

To bring us out of Halloween I thought I would do a daring deed and take on Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers and Freddy Krueger in a no holds bared face off (literally) where I have watched the entire back catalogue of their films to determine once and for all who is champion slasher, Part 1 was on Jason, Part 2 is Michael Myers.

The three killers have haunted us through our childhoods with each horror legend bringing us movies which have completely terrified and equally bemused us with poor sequels and terrible plots

Beware pictures of blood and gore to follow.

Michael Myers is very similar to Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger in that nothing seems to kill him, but the big difference is that Michael Myers is the only non-supernatural monster out of the three, he is a killing machine that has been shot numerous times, blown up in fire, stabbed »

Rob Zombie calls Hollywood a "scared town"

31 October 2009 3:03 PM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

As a horror film director heavy metal rocker Rob Zombie has four films notched in his belt: House of 1,000 Corpses, The Devil's Rejects, the 2007 remake of Halloween and this summer's sequel, Halloween II. He's also developing a remake of the 1950s monster movie The Blob. When Zombie's Blob remake was announced there was some criticism heard, especially from the quarter that prefer John Carpenter's Halloween to the newer one, that Zombie was obsessing with remakes. Now Rob's said something surprising to CNN about the state of the film business in Hollywood: that they don't want original ideas, they want remakes.

"I have lots of original ideas that maybe will get made," Zombie told the news outlet. "But everyone ... even if you bring them the most obscure movie that nobody's ever heard of -- they want to remake that."

Rob Zombie Makes Surprise Label Switch; Hints at Blob Delay

31 October 2009 1:52 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

It was announced a few days ago that Rob Zombie's new album Hellbilly Deluxe 2 was being delayed past its scheduled release date of November 17th due to some issues he was having with the Geffen label he's been with for the past 18 years. And today we got the word those problems were so irreparable that Zombie has signed a new worldwide deal with leading rock label Roadrunner Records through its Loud & Proud imprint.

As Billboard explained it, Zombie felt "the basic structure of releasing a record" was not adequately in place for the project.

"Basically the label (Geffen) wasn't really in a position to promote it or deal with it," Zombie explained. "It was basically everything, from getting advance copies to the press to...There wasn't even time to make a video (for the first single, 'What?', which you can hear below), and we were leaving for the tour. »

Suggestions Please: What are the Scariest Movies You've Ever Seen?

30 October 2009 4:49 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Beware, it's the Predator pumpkin! I'm not sure how many more articles I will be writing between now and Sunday morning so I decided it is time to ask a question I also asked last year around this time: What are the scariest movies you've ever seen?

Last year I also listed six movies I consider to be the scariest I have ever seen. Those six were Them (Ils), The Ring, The Orphanage, The Descent, Jaws and The Exorcist. Before writing that up I had not seen [Rec], which I would certainly include along with this year's Paranormal Activity, a film I consider to be the most frightening movie I have ever seen. I would also add The Others to the list.

While we're on the topic, one thing I started thinking about lately, especially with the growing number of people commenting around the Internet about how much they hated Paranormal Activity »
