Jim is experienced in entertainment, corporate and securities law, including private offerings for companies experiencing major growth and is skilled in handling complex business transactions, strategic planning, structuring strategic alliances, managing mergers and acquisitions, licensing intellectual property, facilitating international business transactions and otherwise helping companies to grow and prosper.
Jim's legal services for film and television production companies includes drafting business plans, financing documents, licensing agreements and sponsorship agreements, including negotiation and drafting all required documentation for complex multi-national financing and licensing rights transactions. Jim has also served as production legal counsel for over 100 feature films.
Jim served as a Managing Partner and acted as General Counsel for Secured Media Capital, L.L.C., a venture capital fund for placement of capital in the media sector in conjunction with the hedge fund industry for which he prepared the fund's investment company offering documents and structured complex financial transactions, including asset and revenue-backed bonds, film library and entity acquisition financing.
Jim has produced several feature films, including "Cliffhanger," starring Sylvester Stallone, Janine Turner and John Lithgow, nominated for three Academy Awards and one of the top grossing films of all time; "Fun," starring Alicia Witt and Renee Humphrey, and winner of two Special Dramatic Jury Awards for Best Acting at the Sundance Film Festival and voted Best Picture at several international film festivals; "Heart of the Deal," starring Ruben Blades and Vincent Spano, a feature television short for Showtime, winner of the Silver Lone Star Award at the Houston Film Festival and ACE Award nominee; "Two Days," starring Paul Rudd; and "Gingerale Afternoon," another Sundance Film Festival entrant. Most recently, Jim produced the award-winning documentary, "Radical Kindness," narrated by Martin Sheen and winner of the Catholics In Media Associates Board of Directors Award and the Gabriel Award for best documentary.
Jim has been a periodic lecturer on law and entertainment matters at: Loyola Marymount University's Executive MBA Program; the FAMU Film School in Prague, Czech Republic, and the Lorenzo de Medici Institute in Florence, Italy. Jim has also served on the boards of several public, private and charitable organizations, including M-Power Musicians, Inc. Jim graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree (Humanities: English, Psychology and Philosophy), earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Michigan Law School and is admitted to practice law in California, Colorado and Michigan.
