One of the most anticipated films of this awards season, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” emerges as one of the premier Oscar vehicles for Netflix. At its soulful core, the farewell performance of the late Chadwick Boseman is as invigorating as anticipated. His work as Levee may very well be his best and most spiritual gift to cinema. Boseman has a real opportunity to join a short list that includes Peter Finch and Heath Ledger, two posthumous Oscar nominees who won their respective categories.
Based on the August Wilson play, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” tells the story of the tension that builds between Ma Rainey, nicknamed the “Mother of Blues” (played by Viola Davis), her ambitious horn player Levee, and the white management determined to control her music in 1927 Chicago.

Chadwick Boseman’s final film, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” has released its first trailer, in which the late actor is suited up in a tuxedo, performing blues music with co-star Viola Davis.
The film, based on August Wilson’s award-winning play of the same name, shares the story of trailblazing blues artist Ma Rainey, portrayed by Davis. Set in Chicago in 1927, the musicians grapple with issues of race, music, relationships and the exploitation of Black recording artists.
The late Boseman portrayed Ma’s band member Levee, an ambitious trumpeter who aspired to make his own mark in the Chicago music scene by putting a contemporary spin on old-fashioned songs.
The film is helmed by George C. Wolfe, who won Tony awards for directing the play “Angels in America: Millennium Approaches” and the musical “Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk.” Wolfe also served as the artistic director of The...

Viola Davis plays the “Mother of the Blues” in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” a jazzy, soulful and musical drama in which she and Chadwick Boseman together tackle race, art, religion and a white-dominated recording industry.
The first trailer for the film shows the lush period setting of 1920s Chicago, where Ma Rainey’s band gathers together to record a new album of her songs, only for them to tell stories, joke around, philosophize and argue about the world and the career they’ve chosen. Before long, though, tensions begin to boil between Ma Rainey, her white agent and her producer and the rest of her bandmates.
“This be an empty world without blues. I try and take that emptiness and fill it up with soul. But they want to call me ‘Mother of Blues,’ that’s alright with me, it don’t hurt none,” Davis says in the trailer.

Netflix has acquired the worldwide rights to “Giving Voice,” a documentary about the August Wilson Monologue Competition that won the Audience Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
“Giving Voice” is directed by James D. Stern and Fernando Villena and follows six students as they advance through the monologue competition, which highlights the work of the playwright behind “Fences” and “The Piano Lesson” and allows winners the chance to perform at the August Wilson Theater on Broadway.
The documentary specifically looks at students from public schools pursuing careers in performance arts, and it uses Wilson’s words to focus on the black experience in America and how words and voices can be ignited to inspire change. Netflix plans to release “Giving Voice” later this year.

December 7, 1998 – Hollywood, California: Director Gus Van Sant slowly makes his way to the Universal Studios production offices, head hung low. His Psycho remake starring Anne Heche and Vince Vaughn, promoted as a shot-for-shot modern take on Alfred Hitchcock’s genre defining 1960 classic, opened the Friday before and spent the weekend on the lips of film fans the world over. Van Sant ends up silently standing at the foot of the desk of execuitive producer Dany Wolf, reaches in his pocket, and extends his hand. I'm happy to report that I just saw Relativity Media's "Take Me Home Tonight" starring Topher Grace, Anna Faris, and Dan Fogler from director Michael Dowse.
The 80s-centric film will open March 4th, and all I could say is, John Hughes would have been proud! (Red Band Trailer Below!)
I will post my review very soon, as well as my fun one-on-one interviews with the cast :happy
For now, here's more info on "Take Me Home Tonight" from Relativity Media:
Recent MIT grad Matt Franklin should be working for a Fortune 500 company and starting his upward climb to full-fledged yuppie-hood. Instead, the directionless 23-year-old confounds family and friends by taking a part-time job behind the counter of a video store at the Sherman Oaks Galleria. But Matt's silent protest against maturity comes to a screeching halt once his unrequited high school crush, Tori Frederking, walks into the store.

Take Me Home Tonight, starring Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Dan Fogler and Teresa Palmer opens nationwide on March 4th, 2011, and I want to give you a little preview. While this isn't the sort of thing that would normally jump onto my radar, I'm generally a fan of Topher Grace, and there's something about the recent MIT grad who works at the video store that resonates oddly with me.
Take a look at the trailer and a couple images, as well as the official synopsis below, and let me know what you think of this one. I think there's some potential here, though it may just be a brilliant job of putting together a trailer, and if nothing else, I'm interested to know what Grace and Anna Faris can make out of the thing.
As the summer of 1988 winds down, three friends on the verge of adulthood attend an out-of-control party...

[1] Relativity Media and Imagine Entertainment have finally released a movie trailer for the long-delayed dramedy Take Me Home Tonight (previously titled Kids in America). Directed by Michael Dowse (Goon, Fubar, It's All Gone Pete Tong), the story follows "an aimless college grad who pursues his dream girl at a wild Labor Day weekend party. He, his twin sister and their best friend struggle with their burgeoning adulthood over the course of the night." The movie's cast includes Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Dan Fogler, Teresa Palmer, MichelleTrachtenberg, Michael Biehn, Chris Pratt, Lucy Punch, Michael Ian Black, and Demetri Martin. The project shot in late 2006/early 2007, and has been completed for over three years now, sitting on the shelf. I usually am a sucker for teen comedy adventures which take place over the course of one night, but this seems a bit generic (or maybe just dated at this point?). Watch the...

PARIS -- French independent distributor MK2 said on Friday it had acquired French distribution rights for Gus Van Sant's latest film, Last Days. Inspired by the story of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, the film stars Michael Pitt (The Dreamers and Van Sant's Finding Forrester) in the lead, Italian director-actress Asia Argento (The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things) and Lukas Haas (Mars Attacks!). Written by Van Sant, Last Days is currently being shot in New York by cameraman Harris Savides who also filmed Van Sant's Elephant and Gerry. It is produced by HBO Films and Dany Wolf -- the same team that worked on Elephant, the Palme D'Or winner at Cannes last year -- also distributed by MK2 in France. Fine Line Features will distribute Last Days in the U.S.
