“Glow” costume designer Beth Morgan was excited to show not only the “glitz of Las Vegas” in the third season of Netflix’s 1980s-set wrestling comedy, but also “a few layers” of life on the Strip when the characters temporarily relocated to the fictional Fan-Tan Hotel & Casino to perform a live wrestling show.
For Morgan, one part of capturing the Vegas of yesteryear was designing “how women were overly sexualized as cocktail waitresses,” so she went for authentic cuts and fabrics found in the town back in the day. But another part was putting a “Glow” spin on such costumes via an intentional combination of “all the Asian cultures” for the Fan-Tan Hotel & Casino. The waitresses there wore a mish-mash of styles and accessories, including fans, to create an aesthetic that she notes was supposed to be somewhat “ignorant” of the time and place.

“Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” — Showtime’s reboot of the London-set “Penny Dreadful,” which aired from 2014-16 — takes us back to 1938 Los Angeles. It’s not film noir, explains costume designer Christie Wittenborn. “It’s a hot L.A. summer.” Hollywood here features zoot suits, evangelical radio singers and Mexican folklore as the series flits around social and racial issues as well as political and religious questions. The series debuts April 26.
Natalie Dormer (“Game of Thrones”) stars as the demon Magda, who can take on various human forms, providing an eclectic canvas for Wittenborn’s work.
One of Magda’s early manifestations is Alex Malone, a tough character with a mannish edge who serves as an aide to Councilman Townsend (Michael Gladis).
“Natalie gave me a sense of how she was going to carry her body, so I wanted to keep the silhouette of what she wore rigid,” Wittenborn explains.

From writer/director Max Joseph, here’s a first look at the trailer for We Are Your Friends starring Zac Efron, Emily Ratajkowski and Wes Bentley.
The film marks Max Joseph’s (MTV’s “Catfish: The TV Show”) feature film directorial debut.
We Are Your Friends is about what it takes to find your voice. Set in the world of electronic music and Hollywood nightlife, an aspiring 23-year-old DJ named Cole (Efron) spends his days scheming with his childhood friends and his nights working on the one track that will set the world on fire. All of this changes when he meets a charismatic but damaged older DJ named James (Bentley), who takes him under his wing. Things get complicated, however, when Cole starts falling for James’ much younger girlfriend, Sophie (Ratajkowski). With Cole’s forbidden relationship intensifying and his friendships unraveling, he must choose between love, loyalty, and the future he is destined for.
