Opening This Week

19 May 2008 2:51 AM, PDT | From ifc.com | See recent IFC news

By Neil Pedley

It's a battle of filmmaking titans this week, the kind of event that comes around once in a lifetime . Steven Spielberg and Uwe Boll will duke it out at the multiplexes. (Forgive us, but that might've been our only opportunity to ever get to put those two names in the same sentence.)

"The Children of Huang Shi"

Set during the Japanese occupation of China during the 1930s, this sweeping historical epic comes from Roger Spottiswoode, the director behind both "Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot" and the narrative remake of "Shake Hands with the Devil." The first official co-production between Australia and China, the film tells the true story of Australian nurse (Radha Mitchell), who with the aid of a British journalist (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), escorts 60 orphaned children 700 miles through the Liu Pan Shan Mountains to evade Japanese secret police. "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" co-stars Michelle Yeoh

"One day maybe, when my legs ain't working properly anymore. Trouble is, I'm impatient. If actors started f**king around I'd probably lose it, you know. British hardman Ray Winstone doesn't think he has the patience to be a director.

But the star - who is famed for his hard-man movie roles - was shocked by her response.

He recalls, "When I was 18, I remember seeing a fella smashing the life out of a girl. I jumped on him, pulled him off and said, 'What do you think you're doing? You're going to kill her.'

"The girl turns around, punches me in the head and says, 'Mind your own business.' I didn't know whether to laugh or cry."

Digital Spy's Celebrity Chart: May 16

16 May 2008 1:32 AM, PDT | From Digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news

Geri Halliwell has never been one to think before she opens her mouth - and the results are often priceless. This week The Artist Formerly Known As Ginger claimed the Queen "epitomises what girl power stands for", praising her "amazing skin", her willingness to travel "even though she's old now" and the fact she's "never spazzed out and lost her decorum". Faced with arguments like that, how could anyone campaign to abolish the monarchy?

10. Ray Winstone

What's Ray's most impressive achievement: urinating on Ronnie Kray, or living to tell the tale?

9. Gordon Ramsay

Winstone Threatens Paparazzi

13 May 2008 12:02 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Hard-man actor Ray Winstone has issued a stark warning to the paparazzi - don't photograph his daughter Jaime when she's drunk.

The Sexy Beast star hates seeing pictures of his offspring behaving badly, and insists he'll "damage" anyone who deliberately targets the 23-year-old actress.

He says, "I tell her not to go where photographers hang around. A lot of these kids court the attention but I know she doesn't.

"There was a picture of her the other day coming out of some place looking pissed (drunk). As her dad it gives me the right zig (makes him angry).

"I am sometimes tempted to do a bit of damage. I sometimes feel like going down there and f**king ironing these geezers out. Picking on my baby is a big mistake."

Winstone Turned Down Harry Potter Role

13 May 2008 12:02 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

British actor Ray Winstone turned down the chance to appear in the Harry Potter movies - because he was not offered enough money.

The Beowulf star admits he was offered a role in a big-screen adaptation of the boy wizard book series, but declined the part because the money he would have earned wouldn't have matched the workload.

He says, "I nearly did a (Potter) movie. They earn fortunes from those films but for the time that is involved in making one they don't want to pay you. I'm sorry, but I make movies to get a living.

"Besides, I would have made two films in the time it would have taken to make one Potter movie."
