Two weeks from now Sdcc 2013 will be winding down, so are there enough horror offerings to entice attendees back to the show for Day 4 (July 21)? With "Supernatural" kicking things off bright and early, we say, "Yes!"
Also on the schedule for Sunday (traditionally the family-themed day of the event) are "Under the Dome," an update on the adaptation of George R.R. Martin's werewolf/Pi/serial killer mashup novella The Skin Trade, a chance to build your own monster, surviving in a post-apocalyptic world, a Neil Gaiman Spotlight panel, a look at what's coming from Diamond Select Toys, a how-to on creating suspenseful, exciting, anxiety-inducing stories, and per usual, a screening of "Buffy the Musical: Once More with Feeling" to close things out.
Since the horror offerings are so light, we've expanded our Day 4 highlights list to cover such topics as the future of sci-fi novels, the 50th anniversary of "Doctor Who,...

Tonight "Cabin in the Woods" will open this year's SXSW Film Festival, and those lucky enough to attend will experience something very special. Ostensibly a gleeful send-up and acidic takedown of modern horror films (and their nearly mythical place in our culture), it's as smart as it is scary, and truly unique. It's not hard to imagine a heavily lubricated SXSW losing their collective shit. We got to talk to co-writer/director Drew Goddard, who created the film with his former "Buffy The Vampire Slayer"/"Angel" boss Joss Whedon, about the inception of the film, what it was like to have your debut feature indefinitely delayed by original studio MGM's crumbling empire, and how much fun it is to be writing a robot movie for Steven Spielberg. (It should be said, right off the bat, that the less you know about "Cabin in the Woods" so you might want to...

Steven Spielberg is headed back to what he's best - and arguably one of the best in the world - at. Big, enormously scaled spectacle.
Deadline have just confirmed that Spielberg will next direct Robopocalypse, the big screen adaptation of Daniel Wilson's robot uprising novel. And, frankly, the idea of Spielberg bringing his skills and bankroll to bear in bringing massive robot carnage to the big screen is very, very appealing.
The secret sauce in this deal, though - the ingredient that makes me think this has a shot at being something truly exceptional beyond being just good popcorn fodder - is the involvement of screenwriter Drew Goddard. The former Buffy, Lost and Cloverfield writer is not just one of the most genre savvy guys in the business, he's also blessed with the rare ability to create believable, sympathetic characters in the midst of large scale madness so, hopefully,...
