Odd List Simon Brew Ryan Lambie 26 Sep 2013 - 07:09
The year 1991 is the focus for our latest underappreciated films list, which includes dramas, thrillers, and a smattering of horror...
Ah, 1991. The year Robert Patrick ran after cars in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, and Kevin Costner grew a spectacular mullet for Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves. But outside the top ten blockbuster list, there lies an entire world of other, less celebrated films to discover.
Some of the movies on this list have been included because they were overlooked in theatres, while others have been added because they were unfairly dismissed by critics. One or two others were modest successes, but (whisper it) we decided to include them anyway because we really, really like them.
So here, for your delectation, is our pick of 25 underappreciated films from 1991.
25. Deceived
You think Goldie Hawn, you tend to think comedy, or her Oscar-nominated turn in Private Benjamin.

If you're a fan of food television, there isn't much chance that you aren't a fan of Anthony Bourdain. No Reservations has proven for years that not only is he incredibly knowledgeable, but he can deliver an entertaining show. Along with guest appearances on just about every food show you want to mention, Bourdain is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to food television.
Travel Channel has given the go ahead on a new show, The Layover, which puts a new twist on things. The jumping off point, obviously, is the quick stop visit, and now Bourdain has to deliver the best of a variety of destinations in a hurry.
Check out all the info below, and keep this one in mind. It won't be around until late this year, but don't let it get past you.

Chicago – I am an unabashed defender of nearly everything that David Mamet has ever made and the arrival of another one of his films under the Criterion banner makes for a special occasion in this critic’s household. The new release of Mamet’s “Homicide” (1991) is a must-own for fans of one of the most important playwrights of the last fifty years and an underrated filmmaker as well.
DVD Rating: 4.0/5.0 Mamet's films almost always deal with figures of authority and men who try to achieve excellence within classic roles like teacher, salesman, or, in the case of "Homicide," police officer. Of course, Mamet isn't interested in a traditional "man in blue" story of good guy fighting crime, even if the film starts by promising such a structure. Ultimately, the fight in "Homicide" is an internal one.
Homicide was released on DVD on September 8th, 2009.

Rob Hunter loves movies. He also loves competing against the Dunder-Mifflin Paper Company with his own paper company called Disemboweled Trees Inc. These two joys come together in the form of cash money payments that he receives every week and immediately uses to buy more DVDs. So join us each week as he takes a look at new DVD releases and gives his highly unqualified opinion as to which titles are worth BUYing, which are better off as RENTals, and which should be AVOIDed at all costs. Click on any of the titles below to magically head over to Amazon.com and pick up the DVD. And don't forget to check out Neil Miller's hilariously titled This Week In Blu-ray column for reviews on the latest high definition Blu-ray releases! Bedknobs and Broomsticks: Enchanted Musical Edition Pitch: A sexy (relatively speaking) Angela Lansbury shows how she polishes bedknobs and broomsticks. Why...

The Gamer soundtrack. Who do you get to soundtrack a 21st century action-death-guns romp starring Gerard Butler, Michael C Hall, Ludacris, and John Leguizamo? Clearly, you get Marilyn Manson, The Bloodhound Gang, Sammy Davis Jnr, and 19 tracks of intrigue, metal guitars, and post-Dust Brothers beats by Robert Williamson & Geoff Zaneli (two rock and roll names right there). Duh.
Gamer does not have the type of cast list you see every day, but then this is the kind of film that once upon a time would have starred Christopher Lambert (come on, who remembers Fortress?). And what’s more, it’s from the writer/directors of the Crank films (which means writer/directors who specialise in writing Bang, Thump, Tits a lot) so I’m guessing Shia Laboeuf wasn’t kicking their door down to get involved. No, it’s all about the Butler, who, after Rocknrolla, Ps I Love You and The Ugly Truth,...

Game, Lionsgate's upcoming science fiction thriller starring Gerard Butler, Milo Ventimiglia, Michael C. Hall, Aaron Yoo and John Leguizamo, gets an original score co-composed by Geoff Zanelli and Robb Williamson. Zanelli recently scored Outlander for The Weinstein Company and Ghost Town for Dreamworks, while Williamson has written the music for horror films The Midnight Meat Train and Pathology together with Johannes Kobilke. Game is set in a future world where humans can control other humans in mass-scale, multi-player online gaming environments. Film is expected to hit cinemas next summer.
