The Oscar-frontrunner “Dune” (Warner Bros.), “Nightmare Alley” (Searchlight Pictures), and “West Side Story” (20th Century Studios) each won sound editing feature awards Sunday night at the 69th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards (held virtually). “Dune” took feature effects/foley, “Nightmare Alley,” a non-Oscar nominee and surprise winner over “Dune” and “No Time to Die,” snagged feature dialogue/Adr, and Oscar nominee “West Side Story” collected feature music. The other Oscar sound nominees are “Belfast” (Focus Features), “No Time to Die” (MGM/UA), and “The Power of the Dog” (Netflix).
There were other surprises: Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon” triumphed in animation over the studio’s Oscar-frontrunner, “Encanto,” which has won a slew of guild awards, and “The Rescue” (Disney+) took feature documentary over Oscar-frontrunner “Summer of Soul” (Searchlight Pictures). Re-recording mixer Tara Webb and dialogue supervisor Leah Katz worked on Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog,” with Webb delivering a powerful soundscape based on strategically stripping the sound away while Katz protected the spare dialogue, delivered by characters incapable of facing their feelings.
A lot of their early conversations with Campion centered around creating the sound of Montana and the sound of the Burbank family house, which is a pivotal part of the film’s ambiance.
Ultimately, Campion was focused on the characters and the tension that underlined the relationship between the Burbank brothers Phil (Benedict Cumberbatch) and George (Jesse Plemons), as well as their interaction with George’s wife, Rose (Kirsten Dunst), or the tense dynamic between Phil and Rose’s son Peter (Kodi Smith-McPhee).

Sound is one of the most important and misunderstood elements in filmmaking, and sound for sci-fi films adds another degree of difficulty.
“Dune,” directed by Denis Villeneuve, boasts two supervising sound editors, Mark Mangini and Theo Green, who worked on the film for 18 months.
“Science fiction is always complex,” says Mangini. “Theo and I called it ‘universe building.’ It’s a blank slate because nothing — people, machines, technology — exists, so all of it has to be invented. In the ‘Dune’ universe, we have ornithopters, dream sequences, the Voice, this palette of unknown things that make sound, which we had to invent from scratch.
“Denis’s mandate was to ground it in an organic reality. He didn’t want it to feel science-fiction-y. He wanted you to watch film and feel those sounds existed in acoustic reality. Theo and I had a philosophy: Fdr, or Fake Documentary Realism.”

This sets up a competitive Oscar race down to the wire next Sunday between the two frontrunners. But there’s also a good chance that the popular Freddie Mercury biopic will sweep both categories as a result of its Cas sound mixing victory on Saturday.

It was a clear victory for sci-fi sound editing Sunday night at the 65th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards at the Westin Bonaventure. “War for the Planet of the Apes” was the surprise winner for Dialogue/Adr, splitting honors with “Blade Runner 2049,” which grabbed the Effects/Foley prize. The big loser was “Dunkirk” (which won the BAFTA sound award earlier Sunday). However, Christopher Nolan’s World War II survival epic took home the Music Score award and remains the sound editing Oscar favorite.
In addition, “The Greatest Showman,” “Coco,” “Loveless,” and “Jane” earned sound editing awards for Musical, Animation, Foreign Language, and Documentary. The big TV winner was “Game of Thrones” (“The Spoils of War”) for Dialogue/Adr and Effects/Foley. Given the unique nature of “Arrival” as a parable about time, memory and love, there was a special collaborative rapport between director Denis Villeneuve and his crafts team. Together they achieved an aesthetic about unity and beauty that goes to the heart of the alien heptapod philosophy.
It began with an oval and circular shape language about time, which binds the heptapods with Louise, the sensitive linguist played by Amy Adams.
The seven-limbed heptapods (a cross between a spider and octopus) are charcoal-gray and oval, like their shell-like space craft. And their circular logograms spew forth like florid ink blots, expressing the beginning and end of thoughts all at once. What’s more, with foreknowledge of the future.
Yet the logograms were particularly challenging for production designer Patrice Vermette. “We looked at hieroglyphs, but Denis didn’t think they were alien enough, and my wife (Martine Bertrand) is a painter...

Everything came together for film composer Jóhann Jóhannsson on “Arrival,” his third score with director Denis Villeneuve (following “Prisoners” and “Sicario”). Here he was able to broaden his avant-garde musical expression in a way that was totally in sync with the alien contact movie about language and communication.
“I have the luxury of working in pre-production with Denis, and the primary inspiration for the score came from the concept art,” Jóhannsson told IndieWire. “One of the main themes was written during the first week of shooting when the helicopter approaches the alien shell [or ship] for the first time.
“I did a session in Berlin where I was working with a 16-track tape loop and I recorded layers and layers of piano drones (sustained without the attack) at different speeds and slowed them down. So it took on the texture of the very tense drone with almost no processing. These were analog...

12 Years a Slave continues to be the leader in the clubhouse when it comes to nominations. After leading the Spirit Award nominations it now leads the International Press Academy's (Ipa) 2013 Satellite Award nominations with a total of ten noms, followed by American Hustle and Gravity, each with eight nominations. The top five nominees were rounded out by Rush with seven nominations and Inside Llewyn Davis and Saving Mr. Banks with six nominations each. The Satellites, however, are an interesting bunch. As you can see there are several nominations in each category, leaving pretty much no stone unturned. I guess you could say no nomination for Octavia Spencer (Fruitvale Station) is a surprise and, in my personal opinion, with such a large field of nominees I'd like to see Joaquin Phoenix (Her) get a nomination, but that certainly isn't going to be a film for everyone even though Arcade Fire was...

We are three episodes into Southcliffe, one away from its denouement, and all the individual threads are beginning to slowly but surely come together. This episode, aside from some incidental and beautifully observed moments, dispenses with the flashback structure it has employed in the first two episodes, choosing instead to further pursue the aftermath of the shootings. To achieve this, director Sean Durkin and writer Tony Grisoni push the character of journalist David Whitehead to the fore as he reacquaints himself fully with his hometown that has been touched by the devastating incident.
In a way, David Whitehead (Rory Kinnear) is somewhat a device, a conduit through which we are allowed to understand and comprehend the grief that has come to these people. The episode is primarily concerned with Whitehead going around Southcliffe and interviewing those touched by the tragedy as an attempt to gain a human perspective on his story.
