All that glitters certainly isn’t gold, as “Glitter” cinematographer Geoffrey Simpson knows all too well. During a recent interview, Simpson told IndieWire that the newfound cult fandom around Mariah Carey’s 2001 film debut is staggering, as “Glitter” is “one of the 10 worst movies.” The “Center Stage” and “Under the Tuscan Sun” director of photography looked back on the feature that was released September 21, 2001 — after its soundtrack came out on 9/11.
In the film, Carey stars as a young singer who overcomes an abusive childhood to reach stardom alongside a toxic boyfriend. “Glitter” was directed by Vondie Curtis-Hall and cleared $5.3 million at the global box office against a $22 million budget. Carey developed the story behind “Glitter” with “What’s Love Got to Do with It” screenwriter Kate Lanier and playwright Cheryl L. West. Padma Lakshmi, Eric Benét, Max Bessley, Terence Howard, and Da Brat also starred.

People often think they know how to make the best decisions when they’re working on a project in an area they have previously garnered success in. But after going through a harrowing, yet equally rewarding, experience, they realize how much they still have to learn, even in subjects they’re seemingly already proficient in. That gripping recognition is relatably presented in director and producer Robert Townsend’s new romantic comedy, ‘Playin’ For Love.’ The filmmaker, who also starred in, and co-wrote the movie’s script with Michelle Amor and Cheryl L. West, crafted an engaging sports comedy that proves that two seemingly different adults can truly bond when they finally accept that they [ Read More ]

I had no idea Robert Townsend was knee-deep in the web series game. Then again, I really shouldn’t be surprised. The web is the next frontier! I thought maybe we’d previously mentioned it on this blog, but a search negated that.
It’s called Diary of A Single Mom, and it’s already halfway through its second season. I completely missed the first. It stars Monica Calhoun as Ocean Jackson, a single mother of two striving to keep her family afloat while working to fulfill her own ambitions of finishing her Ged, going to college and opening her own business. Along her journey, she befriends and joins forces with two other single moms, Lupe (Valery Ortiz), a mother juggling different fathers for each of her two children while facing health concerns that will change her life, and Peggy (Janice Lynde), a once married, wealthy 50-something who suddenly finds herself widowed,...
