Unofficial Red Band Trailer for Romero’s Survival of the Dead

1 November 2009 5:16 PM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Let’s face it, zombies make pretty bad neighbors, what with all the trying to eat you and whatnot. So how do we expect them to make good family members? That’s apparently the goal of a couple of Irish fellas living on an island in George Romero’s latest zombie opus, the unfortunately titled “Survival of the Dead”. Check out a rough cut of the red band trailer for the horror movie below. Fair warning: the quality is pretty, well, rough, being an unofficial trailer and all. On an island off the coast of North America, local residents simultaneously fight a zombie epidemic while hoping for a cure to return their un-dead relatives back to their human state. Starring Devon Bostick, Julian Richings, Athena Karkanis, Kathleen Munroe, Joris Jarsky, Kenneth Welsh, Alan Van Sprang, Wayne Robson, George Stroumboulopoulos, Richard Fitzpatrick, Heather Allin, Stefano Dimatteo, Matt Birman, and written and directed by George Romero. »

Tiff Review: George A. Romero’s Survival of the Dead

15 September 2009 11:13 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Survival of the Dead Written and Directed by: George A. Romero Starring: Kenneth Welsh, Alan Van Sprang, Richard Fitzpatrick, Athena Karkanis, Devon Bostick, Philippa Domville, Kathleen Munroe By its very nature, it seems like horror should be a young man's game; a genre that requires the brashness of youth in order to keep things fresh and continually push the envelope. And yet, there are all kinds of aging filmmakers out there refusing to abandon their genre roots in order to pursue a more "dignified" career path. There's something inspiring about knowing that George A. Romero is almost 70 years old, and still cranking out low budget zombie flicks like nobody's business. The thing is, when you're a living legend, you've always gotta be looking over your shoulder, because there's a good chance that at some point the students will surpass the master, so to speak. What's more, if you're constantly riding on your past successes, »

Survival Of The Dead (Film Review)

14 September 2009 7:17 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

To call George A. Romero’s latest zombie thriller a horror movie is only half right. Certainly, this sixth entry in his 40-year-old series details what happens when the dead return, armed with a blind instinct to rip the soft parts of the living to shreds—but, as any serious scholar of these pictures knows, none of Romero’s Dead films are alike.

The first was a gritty, black-and-white exercise in nihilistic nightmare logic; the second, a day-glo action/satire epic with a brash, bass-heavy prog-rock score courtesy of Italian supergroup Goblin. The third entry trapped its characters in a profane, sexist ticking-time-bomb tomb, mining claustrophobia to sweaty effect while the zombie dregs bit at their doors. The higher-budgeted fourth feature detailed the effects of capitalists foolishly trying to use commerce to control the corpse problem, and the fifth was a low-budget, experimental musing on media manipulation.

Fishing at Night is Hazardous to Your Health. So Says this Survival of the Dead Clip.

Let’s face it, when zombies have become so commonplace that the very idea of fishing at night all by your little lonesome doesn’t even bother you anymore, is that a good thing or a bad thing for a horror movie? You decide. Here’s a clip from George Romero’s latest zombie opus, “Survival of the Dead”, a silly title for a zombie movie about the living dead if you ask me. Starring Devon Bostick, Alan Van Sprang, Kathleen Munroe, Kenneth Welsh, Julian Richings, Athena Karkanis , Joris Jarsky, George Stroumboulopoulos, Wayne Robson, Matt Birman, and a bunch of other people you’ve never heard of. Twitchfilm.net just debuted the first official clip from George A. Romero's latest zombie opus, Survival Of The Dead! Below is the description that goes along with the clip:

In a world where the dead rise to menace the living, rogue soldier Crocket (Alan Van Sprang) leads a band of military dropouts to refuge from the endless chaos. As they search for a place "where the shit won't get you," they meet banished patriarch Patrick O'Flynn (played with zeal by Kenneth Welsh), who promises a new Eden on the fishing and ranching outpost Plum Island. The men arrive, only to find themselves caught in an age-old battle between O'Flynn's family and rival clan the Muldoons. It turns out that Patrick was expelled from the isle for believing that the only good zombie is a dead zombie, while the Muldoons think it's wrong to dispatch afflicted loved ones, attempting to »

First Footage from Romero’s Survival of the Dead

The King of Zombies return with “Survival of the Dead”, which is a pretty weird title, but there you have it. Here is five minutes of behind-the-scenes video from the movie, which features cast interviews (I could do without those, they’re always the most boring part of any movie), and some first footage from the film. I’m anticipating “Survival of the Dead” with a mixture of dread and excitement; a new Romero zombie movie is always cause for excitement, but to be honest with you, Romero seems to be going in circles lately. The MySpace video is accompanied by the following note from George himself and a slew of other new pics you can see here.

Hi guys,

Some of you have been asking about the title of my new film. I called it "Survival of the Dead" because it's about a group of people who escape to a place they think is safe - an island where they hope to survive the war between the living and the dead.

That's how the story begins. By the end, something happens that makes the word "survival" take on a whole new meaning. »
