Argentine helmer Gaspar Noé’s latest feature “Vortex” world premiered in Cannes, where it was greeted with a standing ovation and critical acclaim. Variety spoke to the director at the Unifrance Rendez-vous in Paris this week about the film.
“Vortex,” lensed during the 2020 lockdown, follows an elderly couple in a Paris apartment. Shot entirely in split-screen, it marks a new departure for Noé, with a more meditative realistic ambience, combined with a transcendental undercurrent.
The elderly man is a retired film critic, played by Italian filmmaker Dario Argento (“Suspiria”), who is trying to finish a book about cinema and dreams, while looking after his wife, played by Françoise Lebrun (“The Mother and the Whore”), who is suffering from advanced dementia.
The more subdued, somber tone was influenced by the death of several of Noé’s close friends and family, his own near-fatal cerebral hemorrhage and the fact that both his...

Gaspar Noé’s “Vortex,” an acclaimed meditation on mortality told entirely in split-screen, has sold to Utopia. The deal is for North American rights and comes on the heels of the film’s debut at this year’s Cannes, where it was greeted with a standing ovation and critical acclaim.
Eric Kohn of IndieWire compared to movie to the Oscar-winning “Amour,” writing that the drama about an aging couple in a Paris apartment is “the most sensitive and accessible work from a filmmaker for whom those descriptors rarely apply.” Indeed, Noé has carved out a career for himself as something of a cinematic provocateur, directing challenging and controversial works such as “Enter the Void” and “Climax,” which have shocked and polarized viewers with their violence, psychedelic editing and edgy sex. The change in tone is partly due to the fact that “Vortex” was inspired by the deaths of some of...

French studio Gaumont said Thursday that its upcoming Celine Dion film will not be a biopic but a fictional “homage” that draws heavily from the details of the singer’s life and uses many of her hit songs.
The film – tentatively titled “The Power of Love,” the same name as one of Dion’s songs – is directed by and stars Valerie Lemercier. She plays “Aline,” a young woman who grows up in a large Canadian family, is discovered as a major talent in her teens, becomes a global sensation and experiences the tragedy of losing her husband, just as happened to Dion.
The promotional materials conflate Lemercier’s character with Dion, inviting viewers to “discover the incredible story of Celine Dion through the tender, funny gaze of Valerie Lemercier, who pays her a vibrant homage.” But the names of the characters have been changed, as well as some details of Dion’s life.

French actress and director Valérie Lemercier (Avenue Montaigne) is set to star in ambitious European biopic The Power Of Love (Famous) based on the life of Céline Dion. According to producers, the big-budget (around €23M) French-language project has buy in from Canadian star Dion and will feature her songs.
The film will retrace Dion’s life from the 1960’s to the present day and her relationship with her manager and late husband, René Angélil. The last of 14 children, the Canadian singer became a global superstar in the 1990s, selling more than 200M records, including hit singles The Power Of Love, Think Twice and the iconic theme song to Titanic.
Two-time César winner Lemercier will star as a character based on Dion (but won’t sing her songs). She will also direct the project, which is based on her script. Shoot is due to get underway in France this spring. Sylvain Marcel (Mensonges) will play Angélil.

Playtime, the Paris-based co-production and sales company which will be presenting Francois Ozon’s anticipated “By the Grace of God” in competition at the Berlin Film Festival, has acquired three offbeat French comedies: Geraldine Nakache’s “I’ll Go Where You Go,” “The Bare Necessity” with Fanny Ardant, and Valerie Donzelli’s “Our Lady of Paris.”
“Our Lady of Paris” marks Donzelli’s fifth feature film, following “Marguerite & Julien,” which competed at the Cannes Film Festival; “Hand in Hand”; “Declaration of War,” which played at Cannes’ Critics’ Week and earned six Cesar nominations; and “Queen of Hearts.”
Donzelli stars in the film as Maud Crayon, a failing architect and single mom of two who unexpectedly wins the contest to spearhead the renovation of the esplanade of Notre-Dame de Paris, and who has to deal with a pair of exes – both of whom she still has feelings for.

A24 has landed domestic rights to Argentine-born director Gaspar Noé’s hallucinatory new film provocation “Climax,” the company announced Monday.
The film, which premiered Sunday in the Directors Fortnight section at the Cannes Film Festival, stars Sofia Boutella as a dancer prepping for a professional dance competition whose troupe gets sidetracked by an LSD-induced orgy.
TheWrap critic Ben Croll raved that “this tale of stylized hysteria is an absolute scream.”

Terms of the deal and release plans were not immediately available.
Edouard Weil, Vincent Maraval, Richard Grandpierre and Michel Merkt produced the film. Vice Studios’ Danny Gabai and Eddy Moretti served as executive producers.
CAA Media Finance brokered the deal on behalf of the filmmakers. Wild Bunch is handling international sales.
Since its founding in 2012, the New York-based indie A24 has had big success with more provocative cinematic affair, including Oscar winners like “Room” and “Moonlight” — as well as last year’s awards-season sensations “Lady Bird” and “The Florida Project.”

Film that was deemed too close to current events for Cannes set to open Toronto’s Platform showcase.
French director Bertrand Bonello’s highly charged and well-received feature Nocturama - about a group of young, anti-establishment revolutionaries who orchestrate a series of symbolic bomb attacks across Paris - opened in France today (Aug 31).
Its release comes as the country and the rest of Europe remains on high alert following a series of deadly terror attacks over the last 18 months by supporters of the so-called Islamic State militant group.
Bonello conceived and wrote a first draft in 2010 while working on his period drama House of Tolerance (L’Apollonide), eventually shooting the production in the summer of 2015.
The project was born out of his desire to make an “ultra contemporary’, genre-style picture - as a counterpoint to House of Tolerance - and also explore an explosive, social tension he had felt in the air in France for some time...

Valérie Donzelli, the actress-turned director who we most recently caught as a supporting player in the garishly dressed Saint Laurent, Bertrand Bonello’s stylized biopic might have found a taste for risky content as cameras are set to lense next week on her fourth feature film. Mitre’s second film after The Student, which won the Locarno’s special jury prize in 2011, La Patota has just started shooting in Misiones in north-east Argentina, with Argentine actress Dolorès Fonzi in the lead role.
Inspired by late compatriot filmmaker Daniel Tinayre’s 1960 classic, it revolves around lawyer Pauline who ditches a glittering career in Buenos Aires to help the inhabitants of her impoverished hometown on the Argentine border with Paraguay and Brazil.

Director: Benoit Jacquot
Writers: Benoit Jacquot, Julien Boivent
Producers: Edouard Weil
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Catherine Deneuve, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Chiara Mastroianni, Benoît Poelvoorde
Though he’s been working steadily since the mid-70’s, director Benoit Jacquot’s films tend not to get much attention in the Us, even his growing handful of Isabelle Huppert starring titles (The School of Flesh; Keep It Quiet; False Servant; Villa Amalia) don’t get theatrical or DVD releases here. But the 2012 critical success of his 2012 film, Farewell My Queen seems to have snagged him some more international attention. While Lea Seydoux was originally slated to return for this latest film (scheduling conflicts have caused her to be replaced by Mastroianni), the presence of Deneuve and Gainsbourg should make this an undoubted item of interest.
Gist: One night, in the countryside. Marc misses his train to head back to Paris and meets Sylvie.
