Arterton Joins Westwick in ‘Wuthering Heights’ Death Match

18 May 2009 3:22 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Fresh off the discussion being generated by Landon Palmer's latest Book v. Movie installment of Culture Warrior, there's this wonderful little news item about a Bond girl and a Gossip Girl (guy) joining up for a new adaptation of the enduring classic "Wuthering Heights." Of course, the Bond girl is Gemma Arterton, who seems to be getting a steady amount of work coming off that Quantum of Solace role, and the Gossip Girl is Ed Westwick, who will probably have to put that date-rape charm away to play Heathcliff. For those keeping score, it means that they've found replacements for Michael Fassbender and Natalie Portman who were being announced in the roles almost exactly a year ago. Plus, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the project has found a director in Peter Webber - the man who brought the world The Girl with the Pearl Earring and several brilliant episodes of "Six Feet Under." Ed Westwick to Star in Wuthering Heights

Ed Westwick will be taking a quick break from the Upper East Side to star in his first big movie. He’s starring alongside Bond girl Gemma Arterton in a big screen adaptation of Emily Bronte’s 19th century novel Wuthering Heights. The two will play young lover Heathcliff and Cathy. We love this casting! Ed has that old-fashioned sophistication about him, and Gemma won over our hearts in Quantum of Solace. She stepped into the role after Natalie Portman pulled out. Peter Webber of Six Feet Under will direct the film. He calls the film a “powerful, moving... »

Bond Girl Gemma Arterton in 'Wuthering Heights'

15 May 2009 6:10 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

It has been a while since a film version of Wuthering Heights has made it to theaters, but the pieces are falling into place for a new version of Emily Emily Brontë's classic novel, which was nominated for eight Academy Awards in 1940.

Once upon a time, Natalie Portman was in line to play Cathy oppostie Michael Fassbender's Heathcliff, but both actors are off the project and have been replaced by the other Bond girl from Quantum of Solace, Gemma Arterton, and Ed Westwick from Gossip Girl. Director Peter Webber (Girl with the Pearl Earring) will be behind the camera on the new version, which The Hollywood Reporter reports will shoot later this year. »

Gemma Arterton to Star In New Wuthering Heights

15 May 2009 4:52 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

At least in terms of teen appeal, Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights was the Twilight of its day… but seeing as that was way back in 1847, when teens were a little different and less Omg!Omg!, you shouldn’t be put off the latest film adaptation just yet. The Hollywood Reporter tell us that this new adaptation is to star Bond’s oil-slicked Strawberry Fields, Gemma Arterton (also in the upcoming Prince of Persia and Clash of the Titans) and Gossip boy Ed Westwick. As a result, what will set this version apart from any of the others, including the Oscar-winning 1939 film starring Laurence Olivier, is that at 23 and 21, respectively, its stars are pretty much the same age as their characters. This Heights is to be directed by Peter Webber, previously responsible for Girl with a Pearl Earring and the young Hannibal movie though, earlier on, John Mayberry was set »

'Pearl Earring' Director Webber to Helm New 'Wuthering Heights'

15 May 2009 9:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

News out of Cannes is that Peter Webber, director of Girl with the Pearl Earring and Hannibal Rising, has been signed to film Olivia Hetreed's Wuthering Heights script. The project's been batted around for awhile -- last year, John Maybury (The Jacket) was supposed to direct, with Michael Fassbender and Natalie Portman as leads.

But Hollywood is a fickle mistress, and Portman pulled out, followed by Fassbender. The newly minted version of Emily Bronte's 1847 tearjerker about the thwarted, moor-side love between heartstrong Cathy and her brooding half-brother, Heathcliff was referenced in the mega-blockbuster Twilight, so it only makes sense that this new version is patently aimed at that audience.

Now, instead of the more mature Fassbender and Portman, the principals will be played by Gossip Girl star Ed Westwick and Quantum of Solace's Strawberry Fields, Gemma Arterton. So think Twilight, only without the sparkly vampires and Mormon chastity vibe, »

Gemma Arterton And Ed Westwick Roam The Moors In ‘Wuthering Heights’

15 May 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

English literature contains thousands of classics, but it seems that only three of them are regularly dusted off for a big screen adaptation: Emily Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights,” Charlotte Bronte’s “Jane Eyre,” and Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice.” All three are among my favorites, so I can’t complain, but it’s hard to see them redone over and over again just for the sake of casting the hottest actor or actress of the moment. This new “Wuthering Heights” is no exception, as Variety reports that Gemma Arterton and Ed Westwick have been cast as the immortal couple, Catherine and Heathcliff.

This particular “Heights” has been in the trades quite often. It originally had Natalie Portman in the part of Cathy, but she dropped out and was replaced by Abbie Cornish. Michael Fassbender (”300″) was attached to play Heathcliff; he moved on as well. The producers opted to go younger with the story, »

'Wuthering Heights' Finds a Helmer in Peter Webber

15 May 2009 1:12 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Peter Webber's directorial career includes the awful prequel Hannibal Rising, the forgotten Scarlett Johansson feature Girl with a Pearl Earring and a lone episode of "Six Feet Under" so I am not sure how excited any of us should be over the news he is directing Wuthering Heights, an adaptation of Emily Bronte's novel. About a year ago John Maybury (The Edge of Love) was attached to direct the film, but he has since dropped off. On top of that, almost a year ago exactly Natalie Portman, who was once attached to the film as Catherine Earnshaw, also dropped off the feature. Portman's attachment was, at the time, considered to be a driving force and when she dropped off the film's lifespan looked bleak. Obviously things have changed. Stepping into the role vacated by Portman will be Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace) with Ed Westwick playing Heathcliff, a »

Gemma Arterton Hits Wuthering Heights

15 May 2009 12:47 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

The casting department for Wuthering Heights can finally breathe a sigh of relief and put the kettle on, with Gemma Arterton and Gossip Girls Ed Westwick signing on to play tempestuous Yorkshire-based couple Cathy and Heathcliff in Ecosse Films' adaptation of Emily Brontë's romantic classic.Selecting the leads to play the stormy couple has been a fittingly overwrought process: Natalie Portman and Abbie Cornish were signed on for the role of the headstrong Cath at one point or other before exiting the project, and Michael Fassbender was also attached to play Cath's fiery lover Heathcliff before departing. Director John Maybury also left before being replaced by Peter Webber (Girl With A Pearl Earring).Arterton is 23 and Westwick 21 so, unlike previous cinematic adaptations, this Wuthering Heights will have a very Gen Y feel. "We’ve cast it as written," says producer Robert Bernstein. "Heathcliff’s a teen and the »

Ed Westwick's Upcoming Movie Project: 'Wuthering Heights'

14 May 2009 11:02 PM, PDT | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

"Gossip Girl" hunk Ed Westwick is set to star as Heathcliff on drama movie "Wuthering Heights". It is a film adaptation based on Emily Bronte's 1847 novel with the same title. In addition to Ed, Gemma Arterton, who played Strawberry Fields on "Quantum of Solace", is chosen to be the leading actress, Cathy.

About the role of Cathy, it was initially given to Natalie Portman. However, she was then replaced by Abbie Cornish due to scheduling clash. Later, producers of the flick, Robert Bernstein and Douglas, decided to look for young actress, so 23-year-old Artenton was picked up for the role.

Additionally, Variety reported that Peter Webber, who previously directed "Hannibal Rising", was appointed to be the director of the film. The flick itself is scheduled to be released in 2010.

"Wuthering Heights" centers on poor young boy Heathcliff, who is adopted by the wealthy Earnshaw family. Living together at a luxurious house, »

Former Bond Girl Heads To Wuthering Heights

14 May 2009 11:18 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Gemma Arterton had her big moment last fall, when she popped up briefly as Bond girl Strawberry Fields in Quantum of Solace before getting axed in the name of a giant red herring. But she's about to get a whole lot more screentime, playing tortured young Cathy opposite Gossip Girl star Ed Westwick's Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights, an adaptation of the classic Emily Bronte novel. THR is reporting that Peter Webber, who made the period piece Girl WIth a Pearl Earring, will direct the script by Olivia Hetreed. Arterton and Westwick are both replacing former cast members Natalie Portman and Michael Fassbender, who bounced out about a year ago. The idea here is to get away from "stuffy costume drama," which probably won't be hard with Westwick, a popular TV star, on board. Joe Wright breathed new life into Jane Austen with Pride & Prejudice. We'll see what Webber can »

DVD, Blu-Ray Round Up, Mar. 10, 2009: ‘Scarlett Johansson Collection,’ ‘Brokeback Mountain,’ ‘Witch Mountain’

Chicago – The Round-Up, HollywoodChicago.com’s famous recurring column about lesser Blu-Ray and DVD titles that may have slipped through your fingers at the store recently, is in clean-up mode this week. With a DVD collection for a famous young actress, an old cartoon, a straight-to-video horror movie, and three movies with the word “Mountain” in the title, the only word that comes to mind to tie these titles together is “random”.

You know those bins of “impulse buy” items you’ll see in stores near the cash register? Stuff that you may not have put on your shopping list and that you may not even know you want until you see them? That’s what this week’s Round-Up column is like. Peek in the bin and take a look at “Jonny Quest,” “The Scarlett Johansson Collection,” “Dead in 3 Days,” “Brokeback Mountain,” “Escape to Witch Mountain,” and “Return to »
