Documentaries about the impact of war claimed two of the top prizes as the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam handed out awards Thursday night.
1489, directed by Armenian filmmaker Shoghakat Vardanyan, won Best Film in International Competition. The film revolves around the disappearance of the director’s 21-year-old brother, Soghomon Vardanyan, who went missing in the early days of the renewed fighting in 2020 between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh, an area Armenians refer to as Artsakh.
The award comes with a €15,000 cash prize. The jury members of the International Competition were Emilie Bujès, Francesco Giai Via, Tabitha Jackson, Ada Solomon, and Xiaoshuai Wang.
‘1489’
Jurors called 1489, “A film that acts as a piercing light that makes visible the vast hidden interior landscape of grief and creates a tangible presence from unbearable absence. Cinema as a tool of survival—to allow us all, to look at the things we would rather not see.

Shoghakat Vardanyan’s “1489,” which follows the director’s family after her brother goes missing while serving in the Armenian army, won documentary festival IDFA’s best film prize Thursday.
The jury of the International Competition section said the film “acts as a piercing light that makes visible the vast hidden interior landscape of grief and creates a tangible presence from unbearable absence.”
The jury added that it was “cinema as a tool of survival — to allow us all to look at the things we would rather not see, and ultimately, an unforgettable example of cinema as an act of love.”
The best directing award went to Mohamed Jabaly for “Life Is Beautiful,” in which the Palestinian filmmaker documents his life in 2014 when he was visiting Norway and was prevented from returning home to Gaza because the border was closed.

The Tragically Hip’s Surviving Members Reunite to Pay Tribute to a Canadian Icon, Tease New Projects
When the Tragically Hip played their final show on Aug. 20, 2016, at the sold-out Rogers K-Rock Centre in the group’s native Kingston, Ontario, bassist Gord Sinclair stood onstage in awe of the moment — wondering what the future held for the larger-than-life Canadian rock band.
“There was a deep connection with the people, and as we progressed on that last tour, [lead singer Gord Downie] got stronger and stronger. By the time it got to the last show, it was just like, ‘We should be playing more,’” Sinclair tells Rolling Stone. “It was the audience,...

Big budget Chinese sci-fi The Wandering Earth took home the best picture prize at this year’s Golden Rooster Awards. Scroll down for the full list of winners.
The ceremony, which was held today in Xiamen, in China’s southeastern Fujian province, was preceded by an announcement earlier this week that the state-backed awards would begin to be held annually after this year, rather than the biennial slot it has had since 2005.
The move has been viewed as part of an effort to establish the Roosters as the primary awards ceremony of the Chinese-speaking movie world, ahead of Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards, which have routinely been referred to as the ‘Chinese Oscars’ and were also held today, though there were no nominees from mainland China due to a government boycott.
The Wandering Earth has been a box office smash in its domestic market, grossing $691m. It has also taken $5.9m from its U.

In the early minutes of Chinese director Yang Chao’s sophomore feature, a fish is thrown into a bowl of water somewhere along an anonymous riverbank, darkened with bluish hues, lit only by the gleam of fire. It’s a mightily fine shot that probably would have made a bigger impact if some recent déjà vu courtesy of The Revenant hadn’t kicked in. That said, its serene beauty and intrinsically fabulous quality set quite the visual/metaphorical stage for a surrealist exploration of nature and men. Moreover, the thought of what legendary cinematographer Mark Lee Ping-Bin – Taiwan’s answer to Lubezki, who’s lensed almost the entire filmography of Hou Hsiao-Hsien – can do with this is nothing short of mouth-watering.
Unfortunately, things kind of go downhill from there.
It’s a thankless job to synopsize what happens in Crosscurrent because happen is a strong word for something with...

The untimely death of a seemingly heroic leader like President Michener is a tragedy that was supposed to bring not only the mourners in American together, but all of those who are grieving around the world.
But the news unfortunately proved once again how supposed allies are willing to quickly betray each other in times of despair.
Kara is unsurprisingly the main White House staff member who's having trouble accepting President Michener's death on The Last Ship Season 3 Episode 8. As Tom's aide in the White House, Kara was the person who made the harrowing discovery of the commander-in-chief's suicide.
In the change of power that follows President Michener's death, Kara is horrified that some of his supporters, especially Allison, want to overturn his policies. After the Chief of Staff admits to Kara that she had a personal relationship with him, Allison's bitterness over his suicide leads her to challenge his programs.

★★★☆☆In a Venice that has been bizarrely bereft of strong female performances and roles - Bechdel tests at the ready - Xiaoshuai Wang's Red Amnesia (2014) comes as something of a latter-stage relief. Veteran Chinese theatre actress Lü Zhong catches the eye as Deng, an elderly woman recently bereaved. The newly-made widow keeps busy, picking her grandchild up from school and benignly if a bit bossily interfering in the lives of her two grown sons. She cooks meatballs for gay son Bing (Qin Hao), an act spiked with obvious maternal disapproval, and visits Jun (Feng Yuanzheng) who is a family man but whose daughter-in-law (Amanda Qin) is easily irritated by Deng's passive aggressive meddling.

Rebecca Miller takes a fly's eye view of Judaism through the centuries in the story of Jacob, a Jewish pedlar from pre-revolutionary France who is reincarnated as an insect in 21st-century America.
In a rare opportunity to interview half a novelist, two members of the Italian collective Wu Ming explain to Lindesay Irvine the unusual working methods feeding into their latest novel, Altai – which continues the saga begun in 1999 with their cult novel Q, published when they were called Luther Blissett.
And we return to France with the Sf author turned historical novelist Jonathan Grimwood. He explores the enduring fascination of the French revolution, the backdrop of his latest novel, The Last Banquet.

Running between August 31st and September 10th, the 68th edition of the Venice Film Festival would be a dandy last edition for festival impresario Marco Muller even if he doesn't nab the likes of Wong Kar-wai's The Grandmaster, Walter Salles' On the Road, Fernando Meirelles' 360 and/or Zhang Yimou's Heroes of Naking. In his final year of contract, with approximately twenty-two competition slots (minus the already confirmed opening film from Italian res George Clooney and his Tiff-bound The Ides of March), this thursday's announcement should be heavy on items from the the U.K along with a robust presence from European filmmakers headed by Roman Polanski's Carnage. From France, we think that Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi's Chicken With Plums (see pic above) Mathieu Kassovitz's Rebellion, Yves Caumon's Bird, John Shank's Last Winter, Emily Atef's Tue-Moi (Kill Me) and Juan Diego Solanas...

I've taken the liberty at breaking down the predictions by what should logically fit into what sections: Main Comp, Ucr and the Director's Fortnight sidebar. In the Main Competition category, we should see an increase in the number of titles selected (perhaps hovering around the twenty mark. We can cross out films such as Haneke's latest, Kamen Kalev's The Island, Raymond Depardon's Journal de France, Andrei Zvyagintsev's (2007's Banishment) latest and I wouldn't be surprised if Walter Salles' On the Road isn't completed on time -- and in what should be a vintage year for the festival, these no-shows won't matter. A pair that remain in limbo are the alreasy completed David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method and Pawel Pawlikowski...

A new focus on prevention may be the key for managing China's vast rural and urban populations.
China is gearing up to do what the Scandinavians have been good at for years, and what the U.S. hopes to at least attempt at some point in its existence: quality health care for all.
But the real news? The entire "package" is focused on prevention, not treatment, coordinated through national and local bodies, complete with health education, vaccination services, maternity care, and more.
In top public health schools around the world, prevention is lauded as a superior approach when it comes to health policy and management. Why? Because prevention reduces the burden of disease on society, government, hospitals, and other institutions.
The way the plan works is as follows: Local clinics deliver services to all, while the government pays an average of 15 yuan ($2.25) per person per year, for the entire country of 1 billion plus people.

Todd McCarthy over at IndieWIRE calls it "a fashionably gritty period drama, conceived by intelligent minds and handsomely decked out, but featuring no beating heart or compelling raison d’etre." But Empire Magazine declares it "the mullet-free Robin Hood movie we’ve been waiting decades for." Over at Little White Lies, the main complaint seems to be that "Robin Hood doesn’t seem too certain what to do with itself."In Competition

Over the weekend I was hard at work adding additional titles debuting at this year's 2010 Cannes Film Festival in an effort to make sure once I am in town it is all about seeing the movies and working as little as possible on the asset process. As a result, I now have 17 of the 18 films in competition in the database as information on Sergei Loznitsa's Schastye Moe (My Joy) doesn't seem to be available. However, information on the other 17 is now readily available along with some new pictures and trailers for several of them.
First off, to the right is one of the first three images available for Mathieu Amalric's Tournee, of which I also have the official synopsis for the film from the man most of you know as the villain from Quantum of Solace or Jean-Dominique Bauby from The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.

Updated 04/19 They've added two titles but none to the actual competition list just yet. Updates are included below
04/15 Yes, they will add a few titles. Looking round the web people expect something like 4 to 5 more films to show up. Speculation that Malick's Tree of Life or Nolans Inception or Schnabel's Miral probably won't die until after they add said missing titles. But if you're heading over to the South of France next month or merely reading along on various Twitter feeds or film blogs, these are some of the titles you'll be hearing about.
Blanchett. Crowe. Scott
Opening Night Film
Because you have to kick off with a starry entry for that maximum red carpet kick. It gets the international and mainstream press excited and you need their eyeballs... even if your festival is for the global cinephiles.
Robin Hood (Ridley Scott)
I'm amused that the tagline is marketing this as an "untold story". Hee.

When the line up for Cannes is announced something wonderful happens. For a shining moment the horizon of forthcoming movies expands to reveal a wealth of talent whose diversity of vision makes for an education in the variety of film making in the 21st century.
As previously announced it will be Ridley Scott’s take on Robin Hood which will open the film and I’m happy to see Mike Leigh’s Another Year in competition alongside the latest from Takeshi Kitano and Apichatpong Weerasethakul and there are so many wonderful film makers at the festival this year.
We’re pleased to tell you that HeyUGuys will be in attendance and our Cannes correspondent will be posting later tonight with his thoughts on the line up for this year – we’re really excited to be going to one of the biggest events in the film calendar – what do you think of this year’s films?...

The lineup for the 63rd Cannes Film Festival set to run from May 12 - 23 was announced this morning in Paris, France at the Grand Hotel. On top of the information you'll read below, Twitter user OnTheCroisette added additional information as did ioncinema who specifically reports Terrence Malick's "Tree of Life is 'not ready'" and will not be included in the festival as was previously expected. OnTheCroisette said the Cannes selection committee saw a "copy" of the film, and "anything could happen in the coming weeks," but I'm not holding my breath.
Word from the press conference is that we can expect four to six additional films announced over the coming days/weeks. What will they be? Olivier Assayas's Carlos? Julian Schnabel's Miral? Francois Ozon's Potiche? Bruce Robinson's Rum Diary? Take a look at the list and my brief commentary below and let us know what you think.

Well… hot off the presses… here’s the list for the 63rd Cannes Film Festival, which will head-juried this year by Tim Burton.
Although, from what I’m hearing, this isn’t definitive, as some films are still yet to be announced. However, here are those that have… I’ll scrub through it later for any films that should be highlighted on this blog. But, I’ll say right now that there’s just 1 black film on this list – Un homme qui crie by Chadian filmmaker, Mahamat-Saleh Haroun. Long-time readers of this blog should recognize his name. He was the mastermind behind a film called Daratt.
Take a peek (the list will be updated throughout the day, as necessary):
• In Competition (Country of origin in parentheses):
“The Housemaid” by Im Sang-soo (Sk)
“Poetry” by Lee Chan-dong (Fr/Sk)
“Outrage” by Takeshi Kitano (Jp)

CANNES -- Producer Emmanuel Benbihy has assembled a who's who of hot helmers to head to New York to shoot his upcoming project New York, je t'aime (New York, I Love You), with names including Zach Braff, Mira Nair, Park Chan-Wook and Fatih Akin.
Benbihy said in an interview that other directors signed to contribute to the $14 million project to date are Yvan Attal, Wang Xiaoshuai, Emanuele Crialese, Albert and Allen Hughes and Andrey Zvyagintsev.
Three more directors are to be added to the 12-strong lineup on the movie, which has the support of the city and state of New York and is co-produced by Benbihy's producer partner Marianne Maddalena, whose credits include Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes and the Scream trilogy.
The project also has backing from the recently announced Future Films and Grand Army Entertainment funding pact (HR 5/16).
"With 'NY, I Love You, ' we really want to surprise audiences with young, hip filmmakers with their own personal style and movie language," Benbihy said.

Belgian movie L'Enfant beat 20 other films to win the coveted Palme D'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in France on Saturday. L'Enfant, which has the English title of The Child, was directed by brothers Luc Dardenne and Jean-Pierre Dardenne and follows a young couple struggling to survive in France's urban jungle. This year's festival marked the second time the Dardenne brothers have picked up the prestigious Palme D'Or - they previously won it in 1999 for Rosetta. Elsewhere, Tommy Lee Jones won the Best Actor award for his role as Pete Perkins in western The Three Burials Of Melquiades Estrada, which he also directed. Jones' film also won Best Screenplay for its writer Guillermo Arriaga. Israeli Hanna Laslo picked up the Best Actress prize for her role in Free Zone, about a borderless Middle East. She dedicated her award to her mother, who died in the Holocaust. American director Jim Jarmusch won the Grand Prix award for his film Broken Flowers, which stars Bill Murray, Sharon Stone and Jessica Lange. Chinese filmmaker Wang Xiaoshuai won the Special Jury Prize for Shanghai Dreams. Michael Haneke won the Best Director award for French film Hidden, while Best Short Film went to Wayfarers by Ukraine moviemaker Igor Strembitskyy.
