The comedy world—heck, the whole world—mourns the passing of Richard Lewis, whose death was announced yesterday. The 76-year-old comic was a mainstay on the circuit since the mid-1970s. Though he has several comedy specials and movie appearances under his belt (plus the early 1990s sitcom “Anything But Love” opposite Jamie Lee Curtis) his most widely-seen work was surely as Larry David’s bickering foil on “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”
Lewis’s amplified version of himself appeared in the first regular series episode in 2000 (recall that “Curb” began as a one-off special in 1999), and can be currently seen in the 12th season, which is now airing.
Lewis was nominated for a SAG Award in 2006, for Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series. His special “The I’m Exhausted Concert” was nominated for a Cable Ace Award in 1989.

Rufus Wainwright won’t hit age 50 until July 22, technically, but he started the festivities a few days early with “Fifty Isn’t the End,” a three-hour show at Long Island’s East End that was a tribute to Wainwright’s career, his family lineage and, inadvertently, some of the other children of famous musicians who happen to be among his pals.
With a lineup that included Jimmy Fallon, comic Tig Notaro, Laurie Anderson and members of Wainwright’s family, including his sister Martha and his father Loudon III, the show...

Bruce Springsteen released his debut album in 1972, a decade after Bob Dylan released his first. Springsteen’s album was well-received by critics, but some reviews drove him to change up his writing style. Springsteen admired Dylan and had for years. Still, he didn’t want to put out music that sounded too much like him. Here’s why comparisons to Dylan convinced Springsteen to avoid this in the future.
Bruce Springsteen said 1 of his albums sounded like Bob Dylan
When Springsteen signed to Columbia Records, he was meant to put out music that sounded Dylan-esque.
“John Hammond, Clive Davis, and Columbia had thought they’d signed a folk singer-songwriter,” Springsteen wrote in his memoir Born to Run. “The stock was way up on singer-songwriters in those days. The charts were full of them, with James Taylor leading the pack. I was signed to Columbia, along with Elliott Murphy, John Prine and Loudon Wainwright,...

“Bath County,” the latest single from Asheville, North Carolina indie rock outfit Wednesday, drifts along a strange stream of consciousness. Biblical allusions and Dollywood, kids drinking “piss colored bright yellow Fanta,” a morbid scene in a Planet Fitness parking lot, and a sudden revival with Narcan. Over ragged guitar riffs, Wednesday frontwoman Karly Hartzman narrates it all in a voice that feels weary yet cut through with an anxiety that finally bursts as she screams, “You’ll be my baby til my body’s in the ground.”

On the final night of their first American tour in over two decades, art rock pioneers Roxy Music started at the beginning. They appeared on stage at The Forum in Los Angeles and launched straight into “Re-Make/Re-Model”, the eclectic, experimental song that opened their self-titled debut album in 1972. Behind them, towering screens showed the band as they looked soon after forming in London a year earlier, in all their youthful glam glory: Rakish frontman Bryan Ferry in tiger print, with cheekbones that could cut glass. Synthesizer wizard Brian Eno with his long blonde mullet, looking like Riff-Raff in The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
This reunion tour, which arrives in the UK for Glasgow, Manchester and London shows in October, is timed to mark the 50th anniversary of that first Roxy record. While Eno is not present, having moved on to his own projects as early as 1973, the intervening half-century...

“I will get back on stage if it f***ing kills me,” bat sommelier of legend Ozzy Osbourne told The Independent recently. Aged 73, and recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, Osbourne has rediscovered the determination of the devil. Patient No 9 is his second album in as many years and, like his 2020 comeback album Ordinary Man (released seven years after the Black Sabbath reunion album 13 and a decade on from his previous solo record), it’s a rejuvenated and starry proposition.
While Ordinary Man featured collaborations with Elton John, Post Malone, Tom Morello, Charlie Puth, Travis Scott and most of Guns N’ Roses, Patient No 9 is a roll-call of more hardcore heroes: alongside the returning Roses are Josh Homme, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and various members of Jane’s Addiction, Metallica, Pearl Jam and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Loudon Wainwright III is letting me in on the realities of life at 75. “Just the other night I was moaning and groaning about my orthopaedic problems, my bad back and my hip which is probably going to be replaced,” he says, a subtle smile playing at the corners of his mouth. We’re speaking via video call from his home on Long Island. Over his left shoulder, an antique map sketches an aerial view of his surroundings in Suffolk County, the easternmost tip of New York state. “I was doing what we call the ‘organ recital’,” he says. “How many times I have to pee in the middle of the night, and all that.”
Pondering this irrefutable evidence of physical deterioration, Wainwright turned to his partner Susan Morrison, an editor at the New Yorker, and came up with some words of reassurance. “I found myself saying: ‘The good news is,...

The third volume of the massive, ambitious, and unique project, For the Birds — in which hundreds of artists created new recordings inspired by birdsongs — has arrived today, July 29, with music from artists like the Beastie Boys’ AdRock and Wild Belle singer-songwriter Natalie Bergman.
AdRock’s contribution “Pasadena Parrots” clocks in at just under a minute and begins with some screeching and squawking that gives way to a rush of hardcore guitars peppered with some laser-like synths. Bergman, meanwhile, has turned in a sweet and charming tune, “The Little Bird,” that...

Say this about the pandemic: There are now enough songs about Covid-19 to make for a pretty eclectic playlist. The track lineup would include T Turbo, Gunna and Young Thug’s chilled-out “Quarantine Clean,” Luke Combs’ forlorn “Six Feet Apart,” and Twenty One Pilots’ kitschy, almost romantic “Level of Concern.” If nothing else, the virus has found common ground between genres that otherwise would have barely much in common.

Earlier this summer, Rufus Wainwright released Unfollow the Rules, his first full-on pop album since 2012’s Out of the Game, after a three-month delay due to the Covid-19 shutdown. Although he hasn’t been able to go out on the road to share his songs with fans on a tour as he typically would, that hasn’t meant he hasn’t kept busy creatively.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, he’s been performing “quarantunes” from his living room piano, what he’s termed the Rufus-Retro-Wainwright-Spective, keeping his fans entertained...

“The folk era had died — or did it?” Allen Ginsberg asks, with a dash of whimsy, in the early portion of Martin Scorsese’s new Rolling Thunder Revue film. At this weekend's inaugural Vulture Festival, we shared a lovely Mother's Day brunch with Rufus Wainwright and Julie Klausner, who chatted about musicals, Mark Ronson (Rufus: "I'd like to see him naked just to see what his pubic hair looks like. Is it perfect?") and, naturally, moms. Wainwright's late mother, musician Kate McGarrigle, died a few years ago and he paid a lovely tribute to her — performing a song she wrote about his father, Loudon Wainwright III, "The Walking Song." (Wainwright and his sister, Martha have started a foundation in her memory.) Maternal inspiration quickly flowed into talk about other influential artists and Wainwright brought up his new adoration of Lana Del Rey. Let's just say that he wasn't a big fan ... at first. Watch the clip below and stay tuned for more video from Wainwright's Vulture brunch.

The cyclical nature of fashions and trends is baffling to some and fascinating to others. Who would have thought that in the year 2013, when many leading technologists believe that we are only a handful of years away from being able to purchase an entirely auto-piloted car, that our inclinations in terms of music and fashion would be more in line with those at the turn of last century.
And they are – there is no debating it. The fashion trend of the day clearly belongs to the Hipsters who blend vintage clothing from an array of different eras with oversized frames and modern footwear. There is, however, a style which is hard to blend due to the fact that its characteristics are so idiosyncratic and representative of that time that mixing them with apparel from other eras seems disrespectful and just plain wrong.

I’m not exactly sure what I’m selling here. At first I thought No Pay, Nudity was a documentary about actors. I thought Laurie Metcalf, Nathan Lane, Ted Levine and others were appearing to talk about the positives and negatives of their profession. Then I thought maybe they were at least playing themselves in the movie. After watching the Kickstarter campaign video I don’t know what the finished result will be. It has a scrip by Ethan Sandler (Whitney… wait, don’t go away yet), so it’s fictional. And in addition to the actors already mentioned, the huge ensemble on board includes Lewis Black, Brent Spiner, Jessica Hecht, Austin Pendleton, Boyd Gaines, Mark Blum, Peter Jacobsen and many more whose face you’d recognize before their name. It’s basically a movie full of “that guy” non-stars. But not Curtis Armstrong, apparently, though he does show up in the campaign video. I...

As we all gear up for the fall premieres of our favorite television shows, viewers are soaking up every bit of content they can. GIFs and think-pieces on our favorite characters abound, trailers are watched and rewatched and soundtracks are released. For HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, the soundtrack is as artful as the show itself. With contributions from favorites like The National’s Matt Berninger, the show is set to release Volume Two of the soundtrack on Sept. 3 via Abkco Records. Now, listen to the latest single from the soundtrack, Loudon Wainwright’s “The Prisoner’s Song.” The track was recorded with Vince...

Opening on Valentine’s Day here in the UK, Judd Apatow’s This Is 40 is the sort-of sequel to the blockbuster comedy success, Knocked Up. The original film featured a stellar and impressively diverse soundtrack, including the likes of Bright Eyes, The All-American Rejects, The Clash, and Britney Spears.
And with Apatow at the helm once more, it’s no surprise that the sort-of sequel brings with it another brilliant selection of music for the Ost.
Apatow has reteamed with music supervisor/editor Jonathan Karp for This Is 40, who worked on the original film (and many other of his projects), and the sixteen-song soundtrack is expectedly fantastic. A selection of classic, remastered tracks that sit alongside nicely with younger artists.
Yoko Ono kicks the proceedings off with Yes, I’m Your Angel. I admit I’m not particularly familiar with Ono’s music (and know her more for...

It's already been revealed that the soundtrack for Judd Apatow's "This is 40" -- his sort-of-sequel to "Knocked Up" -- will feature another choice selections of cuts, including songs by Yoko Ono, Paul McCartney, Avett Brothers, Loudon Wainwright and more. But even more appealing is the fact that there are four artists who contributed new songs to the film's soundtrack, including Fiona Apple, Norah Jones, Graham Parker (who cameos in the film), and Lindsey Buckingham; all produced by the film's composer Jon Brion (Wilco and Ryan Adams also contribute new/live versions of previously known songs). It's a bit of a Dad-rock mix, but hell, it fits the material, and these kind of song selections served the tone for "Knocked Up" and Apatow's previous film "Funny People" extremely well. This is a long-winded way of saying, here's a first listen of Apple's new track "Dull Tool" and it...

It's not every day that Paul McCartney and Yoko Ono work on the same project, but music fans have Judd Apatow to thank for making just that happen. The two music legends have both contributed songs to the soundtrack for Apatow's "This Is 40," joining a stellar line-up that includes Paul Simon, Fiona Apple, Ryan Adams, Norah Jones and many more.
Ono's song is called "I'm Your Angel" while McCartney's is titled "Lunch Box Odd Sox." The latter tune was first released in 1980 as a bonus track on a Wings album, as NME notes.
The two recently made headlines when McCartney said that Ono was not to blame for the Beatles' breakup, refuting a long-standing rumor. (He did, however, say that it was difficult to always have her around.)
"Dull Tool," Apple's contribution to the soundtrack, marks the first time the singer has crafted an original song for a film.

A midlife crisis never sounded this good. For his upcoming sidequel/spinoff "This Is 40," Judd Apatow reached out to some pretty big names to write some new tunes for his movie, with more than a few song titles hinting at a rocky emotional ride for Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann). Norah Jones, Fiona Apple, Graham Parker, and Lindsey Buckingham have all contributed new songs, produced by the film's composer Jon Brion, with Wilco and Ryan Adams providing new and/or live versions of "I Got You (At The End Of The Century)," "Lucky Now" and "Shining Through The Dark." (Does this mean there's going to be a Ryan Adams cameo in the film?). The rest of the set is rounded out with tunes by Yoko Ono, Paul McCartney, Avett Brothers, Loudon Wainwright and more. Pretty solid Dad rock mix all around. The soundtrack drops on December 11th,...

The previously announced Fiona Apple will be joined by Ryan Adams, Norah Jones, the Avett Brothers, and, of course, Graham Parker, on the soundtrack for Judd Apatow’s “This Is 40.” While tracks from some of the artists, including Paul Simon, the Avetts, and Loudon Wainwright, have been released before, the cuts from Jones, Apple, Parker (who plays heavily into the plot), Lindsey Buckingham, Wilco, and Adams are all original. Jon Brion composed the score and produced several of the new cuts, including Apple’s “Dull Tool.” The soundtrack comes out Dec. 11. Read Drew McWeeny's review of "This is 40" here. The...

It's wedding week for Rufus Wainwright and longtime boyfriend Jorn Weisbrodt. The New York Post reports that the singer-songwriter will be saying "I do" to his German arts-administrator fiancé on Thursday at Wainwright's home in Montauk, New York. Among the some 250 wedding guests expected at the splashy wedding are Yoko Ono and Carrie Fisher. Wainwright, 39, is also expected to perform at the wedding.
Wainwright and Weisbrodt have been dating since 2007; the couple became engaged in late 2010. In February 2011, Wainwright announced that he and Lorca Cohen (daughter of famed musician Leonard Cohen) had welcomed a baby girl, Viva Katherine Wainwright Cohen; Wainwright, Weisbrodt and Cohen share custody over the baby girl.
Wainwright hails from a legendary family of musicians that includes sister Martha Wainwright, mother Kate McGarrigle and father Loudon Wainwright III.

Rufus Wainwright is to wed his long-term partner Jorn Weisbrodt on Thursday (23.08.12). The 39-year-old singer and the German-born theatre producer - who got engaged in November 2010 - are to tie the knot at the home of his singer/songwriter father Loudon Wainwright III and late mother Kate McGarrigle in Montauk, New York, after same-sex marriage was made legal in the state in July 2011. Sources told the New York Post newspaper that Yoko Ono and Carrie Fisher - who is best known for playing Princess Leia in the original 'Star Wars' trilogy in the late 70s and early 80s - are both due to attend the 'Hallelujah' hitmaker's nuptials, along with around 250 guests. Attendees will...

As we’ve recently seen comedian Louis C.K. explode into the mainstream with his personal, acute FX show Louie, another funnyman has opted to test out the feature film waters in a similar style. Premiering at Sundance this year, Mike Birbiglia‘s Sleepwalk With Me was one of our favorite films from the festival. Co-written by This American Life‘s Ira Glass, we called the film a ”a surprisingly moving, modest motion picture about chasing dreams and leaving people behind, and how hard it is to do both.”
We’ve got our first look tonight, which does an excellent job at showing a mix of the comedy and drama. And Marc Maron even gets a bit of screentime. Check out the trailer and poster below via Apple for the film also starring Lauren Ambrose, James Rebhorn, Carol Kane , Cristin Milioti, Aya Cash, Lucy DeVito, David Wain, Angelic Zambrana and Loudon Wainwright III.

In a way, it has always seemed like the life of Rufus Wainwright was headed for the big screen. The son of famed Canadian folk music legends Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III, he was born into something close to music royalty. But he forged his own musical path, performing weekly shows in his hometown of Montreal before cutting early demos (listen to one of the songs below) that found their way into the hands of famed producer/arranger Van Dyke Parks who passed it onto DreamWorks head Lenny Waronker, and the next thing you know, he had a record deal (Jon Brion produced his first album). And over the course of six albums, and a couple more live albums, Wainwright showcased himself to be a premiere pop songwriter, with influences as wide-ranging as Tin Pan Alley and high opera, all while putting his own baroque spin on things; Elton John...

On Wednesday night the Brooklyn Academy of Music kicked off its 4th annual BAMcinemaFest, a 10-day showcase of independent films culled from Cannes, Sundance, Toronto, Berlin, SXSW, and other festivals from around the world. Highlights from this year’s lineup include Sundance sensation “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” controversial true crime story “Compliance,” found-footage horror anthology “V/H/S,” psychosexual comedy “Nobody Walks” and many, many more. Check out the full line-up here. While some might have guessed ‘Beasts’ to be an obvious choice to open the fest as it's the film coming off the festival circuit with the most deafening buzz, Bam instead selected Mike Birbiglia’s “Sleepwalk With Me.” After seeing the film, which was set and filmed in Brooklyn, it was clear that it was the perfect choice. Based on Birbiglia’s autobiographical one-man show, the story follows Matt Pandamiglio (a proxy for the comedian), a struggling...

Bonnie Raitt has explained why she stepped away from the spotlight for five years. The blues singer revealed to CNN that she needed a hiatus from music in order to grieve the loss of her parents and older brother. "The time that I really was off I wanted to literally be off, not thinking of what my next project was going to be," Raitt explained. Raitt returned to recording for the new album Slipstream, which sees her covering Bob Dylan and Loudon Wainwright III. The musician noted that her hiatus reinvigorated (more)...

Rufus Wainwright's Out of the Game was released on May 1, but the single of the same-titled album is already getting radio play, delighting fans of the dandyesque singer/songwriter in its pop-crossover possibilities. Wainwright, the son of the late Kate McGarrigle of the McGarrigle sisters and Loudon Wainwright III, has a lot of sophisticated urban fans - but mainstream success eludes him, maybe because he simply hasn't wanted to compromise his romantic style and edgy urbane lyrics. But Out of the Game could change all that. That's because Amy Winehouse producer Mark Ronson is at the helm. "I knew

Loudon Wainwright Jr., a noted columnist and editor for Life Magazine, died in 1988, just four days shy of his sixty-sixth birthday. His son, Loudon Wainwright III, was 42 that year, already an established folk singer-songwriter but not yet the cult actor with impeccable timing. He had already made his father a grandfather, although in the late 1980s no one knew that Rufus, Martha, and Lucy would perpetuate the Wainwright name for another generation.

-- Loudon Wainwright III, "Older Than My Old Man Now" (2nd Story Sound)
This marvelous album will resonate with sons, daughters, parents, spouses or those mindful of their mortality.
In other words: everyone.
Few make the personal universal better than Loudon Wainwright III, and on "Older Than My Old Man Now," he sings for us all on the topics of decline, death and family dysfunction.
These have been recurring subjects in the Wainwright oeuvre, but now that he's 65 – and well aware his dad passed away at 63 – nearly every song touches on death. Even the novelty tunes fit with the album's theme – "Date Line" looks at the passage of time from the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and the hilarious "My Meds" is a druggy tune for the Medicare crowd.
Inventive musical arrangements keep things from becoming too grim, and a large supporting cast helps, too. Among those contributing are all...
