Kasba. The epic may go to the origins: the archetypes of thought, emotion and spiritual desire, and dissolve them in the present. The sensuous, contemporary life, seen from the perspectives of both past and future: film. Like music, the cinema is experienced as a continuous, live process of energies. It is conceived and best remembered in a flash, a composite whole.—Kumar Shahani, Film as a Contemporary ArtA sequence from Kasba (1990), directed by Kumar Shahani, has remained imprinted in my mind. Adapted from Anton Chekhov’s 1900 novella In The Ravine, Shahani’s melodrama is an exploration of feudal patriarchy in a small township in the mountains of Kangra. The film follows the younger daughter-in-law Tejo’s (Mita Vashisht) brutal power grab, which will finally culminate in the killing of the male heir to the family business. Immediately following this harrowing scene, Tejo stands at the edge of an open window,...

Good Luck Jerry
Starring Janhvi Kapoor, Mita Vashisht, Deepak Dobriyal
Directed by Sidharth Sengupta
It isn’t easy to extract laughter out of drug dealers, cash-strapped migrants and cancer patients. Good Luck, Jerry manages the herculean feat with a fair amount of success. This is not a life-changing film. But it does show us how to take charge of our lives when the going gets really rough. Never mind the means. The narrative spills the beans with confidence.
Janhvi Kapoor plays the titular role of a Bihari girl in Punjabi who makes a living working at a massage parlour. She is neither a victim nor a schemer. The film never over-sentimentalizes Jerry’s circumstances choosing to see her as a manuipulator rather than a victim.
Some of the best-written sequences feature with her mother, played with brilliant punctuation marks by Mita Vashisht (she is more fun and funnier than Saranya Ponvannan...

Modern Love: Mumbai (Amazon Prime Video)
Six films directed by Alankrita Shrivastava, Hansal Mehta, Nupur Asthana, Vishal Bharadwaj, Dhruv Sehgal, Shonali Bose
Three of the six films—we can’t call them episodes as they are all self-contained independent narratives—are absolute winners. The stand-out films here are clearly Hansal Mehta’s BaaiVishal Bhardwaj’s Mumbai Dragon and Shonali Bose’s Raat RaniThe last being special for Fatima Sana Shaikh’s rousing performance, but more on that later.
Hansal Mehta’s Baai features Pratik Gandhi as the scion of a conservative Muslim family struggling in the closet. Rich in ambiance and brimming with romance music and elegance Baai is a classic representation of what can be done in the Ott space if a filmmaker has his heart set on it. While Pratik and debutant Ranveer Brar are splendidly paired as lovers, Baai brims over with wonderful actors in even the smallest part; for example,...

Aranyak(Netflix)
Starring: Raveena Tandon, Parambrata Chatterjee, Ashutosh Rana, Meghna Malik, Zakir Hussain
Directed by Vinay Waikul
No comparison intended. But in Satyajit Ray’s classic Aranyer Din Ratri the forest held so much mystery and intrigue, it was almost like exploring a universe of foliage in search of the true meaning of life.
The forest in Aranyak is also crammed with mysteries, as a series of murders occur in the thick of the forest. The gruesome goings-on in the greenery are attributed to a beast called the nar-tendua, half-man half-beast, full monster.
So is the nar-tendua responsible for the multiple killings? Or is a deadly human impersonating the beast-man’ bestial bloodshed technique? The answer to that is of course obvious. Aranyak milks the mystery of the forest. But it doesn’t go deep enough. The director Vinay Waikul, relatively new to the craft, stops short of exploring the wide mysterious landscape.

Chhorii(Amazon Prime Video)
Starring Nushrratt Bharuccha, Mita Vashisht, Rajesh Jais, Saurabh Goyal
Directed by Vishal Furia
Chhorri ke peeche kya hai???!!!! An urgent message on female foeticide is tucked away in the ghagra folds of this unusual flawed yet interesting shiver-giver. Almost the entire film is set in deserted yawning stretch of a sugarcane field where the silences are punctured by eerie sounds of little children with big wide eyes playing and laughing in a deceptive show of normalcy.
As this low-budget mayhem-drama tells us, quiet places secrete deep disturbances. Right. But we don’t really get to penetrate the heart of the horror. Director Vishal Furia’s faithful adaptation of the Marathi film Lapachhapi is unable to convey the fearful ambience of the original.
Yes, there is plenty of atmospheric pressure in Chhorri. But most of the jumpscare moments are reserved for the last half an hour when...

New Delhi, March 5 – Many seasoned Indian TV actors have been edged out by the influx of high pressure daily soaps and a younger lot who, some say, are chosen more for their looks than talent.
