Last week's major release was a 70-year-old classic, and coincidentally today brings yet another iconic film that's actually two years older. "Snow White" was Disney's first animated feature, and appropriately enough it marks the launch of their new "Diamond Series" Blu-ray line. But blasts from the past aren't the only highlights of the week, as Jack Black and Michael Cera rock it old school in today's DVD Report.
"Year One" combines the talents of mega-producer Judd Apatow and legendary director Harold Ramis for a old-fashioned road trip through the ancient world. Starring Black and Cera as down-on-their-luck cavemen, the film draws together an eclectic cast from the comedy scene, including Paul Rudd, David Cross, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Hank Azaria and many others. "Year One" had an underwhelming response at the box office, but Sony is hoping this Blu-ray and DVD release will bring in new fans. Audio commentary with Raims, Black »

Finally! It's the trailer for He's Just Not That Into You. Wait ... sorry! This is the new 50-million notable faces jam-packed into one neat romantic comedy package movie -- Valentine's Day. No, not the Nia Vardalos romcom I Hate Valentine's Day. That movie: A. Came out in the summer rather than, you know, the day of romance. B. Had a stupendously bad showing at the box office. But something tells me this flick won't have the same problem.
No, not because it looks particularly good, but because it's got the formula. It's coming out on Valentine's Day, so it's already catering to the couples itching for romantic cinema. It's got all the recognizable goofs and jokes we've seen before. Even more importantly, it's jam-packed with notable names and faces -- Julia Roberts (re-teaming with Pretty Woman director Garry Marshall), Bradley Cooper, Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Biel, Anne Hathaway, Patrick Dempsey, Topher Grace, »

Nothing can really compare to the craptacular showing of Zyzzyx Road, the film that brought in a whopping $30. That's no typo -- it didn't bring in $30 million, not even $30 thousand. I'm not sure any film could ever compete with that, except for maybe a For Justin & Kelly sequel, but there is a stinker this summer that comes sort of close.
It was set to be her big comeback. Two films, one she was headlining, and one that she wrote, directed, and starred in. The first made the rounds, but the other didn't go much further than a blog post or two. Figure out who I'm writing about yet? Yes, it's Nia Vardalos and her feature I Hate Valentine's Day. Gordon and the Whale dug into the little feature that couldn't, revealing that after spending $5 million and making well over $200 million on My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Valentine's Day only brought »

The other day I watched My Life in Ruins out of curiosity and because I was bored. In the past, I've been quite cynical about the movie and Nia Vardalos's upcoming film I Hate Valentine's Day, but when all was said and done, I was a captive audience. And you know what? I like Nia Vardalos. I want to root for her. But it was in spite of myself that not only did I like it... I cried. Yes, despite the hackneyed plot - woman uproots her life, is cranky and miserable and loveless, then gets her groove back, along with a hunky fellow; despite the use of every possible ethnic and sexual stereotype possible; despite a love interest whose name is Poupi Kakas; and despite the complete lack of innovation in terms of the romantic comedy genre.... I liked it. And I cried. And I was very embarrassed. »

Online retailers have revealed Fox Home Entertainment plans to release the Greek infused romantic comedy My Life in Ruins on October 6 simultaneously on Blu-ray Disc and DVD. My Life in Ruins, hoping to mooch of the success of My Big Fat Greek Wedding with shared star Nia Vardalos, crumbled to ruins at the box office with a meager $8.5 million in ticket sales. The film co-stars Rachel Dratch, Richard Dreyfuss, and Alexis Georgoulis. The only disc features to share at this time are a requisite 1080p transfer and 5.1 DTS-hd Master Audio track. Additional features will be shared upon receipt from the studio. My Life in Ruins on Blu-ray retails for $39.99 but can be pre-ordered at Amazon.com for $27.99 by clicking here. »

Drop Dead Diva is Lifetime's all new series that will have you rethinking the definition of beauty every Sunday night at 9pm. Deb is a vapid model who spends endless hours examining her cankles, perfecting her toe tap beauty bounce, and is obsessed with Splenda. Jane is a high powered attorney who enjoys loser lit, practical Layne Bryant suits, and cares more about work than her own appearance. When these two women both encounter death, something extraordinary happens; Deb's soul enters Jane's body, leaving the perfect size 2 model's soul inside Jane's less than perfect body. Get ready to laugh as Jane tries to adapt to her new situation and enjoy a beautiful story that rips down the stereotypes of beauty. Broadway vet Brooke Elliott plays Jane in the Lifetime series Drop Dead Diva and has been collecting rave reviews for her performance since the premiere episode aired last week. Redefining beauty, »

This week marks the premiere of the first of three film-to-television adaptations that will hit our TV's this year. ABC Family will kick things off on Tuesday with their spin of 10 Things I Hate About You, and in the fall, two will follow -- NBC's Parenthood and ABC's Eastwick (based, of course, on The Witches of Eastwick). In honor of this trio of shows, the La Times has outlined not only the details of the new programs, but also the hits and misses that already litter television history.
The piece notes a few from recent memory, like The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Buffy, and The Dead Zone, but also notes some doozies that you might not remember. Did you ever catch Ferris Bueller co-starring Jennifer Aniston? Dangerous Minds? Baby Talk (an abysmal remake of Look Who's Talking)? One glaring omission -- especially in the wake of Nia Vardalos' return to »

I Hate Valentine’s Day
Directed by: Nia Vardalos
Cast: Nia Vardalos, John Corbett
Running Time: 1 hr 35 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: July 3, 2009 (Limited)
Plot: A woman who runs a floral shop (Vardalos) hates love but enjoys Valentine’s Day. Her impressions on the “pointlessness” of love begin to change when she meets Greg (Corbett).
Who’s It For? Those who can enjoy all-around cheap movies about relationships (this is certainly not by definition a romantic comedy).
Expectations: Considering the title, I was more than willing to share Vardalos’ aggression towards a holiday that can be as brutal for some as it is spectacular for others. Even though Vardalos put My Life In Ruins last month, I was willing to give her a chance to make things right.
Scorecard (0-10)
Actors:
Nia Vardalos as Genevieve: Vardalos is as much of a trickster as her title. It turns out for ninety »

Welcome to The Morning Read. Since Hollywood tried to get a jump on the holiday weekend, everything opened on Wednesday, so "Public Enemies" and "Ice Age: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs" are both playing wide, and for anyone who feels like they just didn't get enough Nia Vardalos with "My Life In Ruins" last month, her new film "I Hate Valentine's Day" is opening limited. How much you want to bet her character doesn't reeeeeally hate it? Hmmm? Fourth of July weekend normally means the news cycle slows down to a crawl, but already this morning, Sarah Palin announced she's resigning from... »

Global warming will take a holiday at the box office this holiday weekend as a new Ice Age dawns with an expected five-day take of about $60-70 million, according to industry forecasters. Last year, Will Smith's Hancock took first place with $62.6 million. In a surprise, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs leaped ahead of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen out of the holiday starting gate on Wednesday with an official take of $13,791,157 -- the seventh-best opening for an Independence Day holiday. To be sure, Transformers was nowhere close to folding as it pulled in $10,939,131. Also making an impressive showing was Michael Mann's Public Enemies, which bowed at $8,165,025 but could see its numbers rise substantially over the weekend -- particularly tonight -- as older audiences arrive at the multiplex. The film, which stars Johnny Depp and Christian Bale, has piled up dozens of positive reviews, including several which predict Oscar nominations for the director and his stars. On Thursday, the Fandango online ticket sellers said that Ice Age accounts for 46 percent of its advanced ticket sales, while Public Enemies accounts for 21 percent, and Transformers 2, 9 percent. Also opening today (Friday) is the Nia Vardalos comedy I Hate Valentine's Day. It's expected to be a big, fat bomb. »

In an odd bit of scheduling, the comedy I Hate Valentine's Day is opening over the Independence Day holiday, and it's certainly clear that critics have no sweet Valentine's Day missives to dispatch to Nia Vardalos, the star of the film. ("She can expect to loathe Independence Day, too," writes Elizabeth Weitzman in the New York Daily News.) Claudia Puig in USA Today gives it her vote as worst movie of the year, pronouncing it a "clunky, unfunny and plodding mess." Since Vardalos is also the writer, director and star of the movie, she "gives new meaning to the term triple threat," comments Lou Lumenick in the New York Post, who remarks that he's "been to funerals that were a lot more fun" than this movie. Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times observes that Vardalos goes through the entire film smiling. "Nobody smiles that much," he says, "unless they suffer from the rare giocondaphobia, or Constantly Smiling Syndrome, a complaint more often seen among viewers of Rush Limbaugh and field hands in Gone With the Wind." "This is a film with a mission," writes Robert Abele in the Los Angeles Times. "Get to the grand-gesture climax without disturbing any clichés in its path." »

Only two major releases are hitting theatres over this holiday long weekend, the first being Michael Mann's Public Enemies starring Johnny Depp, and the other being Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. Both will probably make a boatload of cash, but will either of them be able to match Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen? The only limited release this weekend is the second film starring Nia Vardalos this summer, I Hate Valentine's Day. She wrote and directed this one herself, and reteams with My Big Fat Greek Wedding co-star John Corbett. What will you be checking out?
